[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars were lacking, no real focus, no national achievements
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My essays, which should’ve been my strengths, weren’t good enough. I just didn’t spend enough time on them. Also, my application is nothing special, as you can see.
[/ul]General Comments:
I did almost all of my app at the last minute. After I turned it in, I thought of so many things that I could have done better. I’m wondering if I would’ve gotten accepted if I took the time to do my application to the best of my ability. Probably not, considering all these deferred applicants who are objectively better than me. Good thing I didn’t waste too much time on my app, eh? Grats to all who got accepted!

I really, really don’t want to have to wait until spring to find out if I get in But good luck to all the other people who were deferred, and congratulations to everyone who got in :)

[] Summer Activities: Attended Victory Briefs Institute (2 week long debate camp at UCLA), Multiple Boy Scout camps, Philmont last summer (Crew Leader), multiple week-long backpacking trips.
[] Essays: Honestly the best thing I have ever written. An extended metaphor relating my house to a war-zone and my 1969 MGB as my escape to college. Why Yale was also very heart-felt, about leading my debate program to national success.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was very good, but concise, from my AP Calc and AP Stats teacher, the other was from my AP Lit teacher who I knew very personally, and was acquainted with some hardships that I had.
[] Counselor Rec: Did not see. I had a new counselor but she said she had help writing it from my Dean of Students, whom I knew personally.
[] Interview: Was not contacted… This rather upset me, but I guess there aren’t too many Yale alums in the Seattle area.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Economics and Applied Mathematics
[] State (if domestic applicant): Washington (Rural suburb of Seattle)
[] School Type: Large public (1700 kids), not competitive at all (No Yale applicants in the past 5 years, maybe 2-3 Ivy league applicants a year, sent 2 students to Stanford ever) we average sending 45% of our students to a 4 year college.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 130,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Don’t know if it counts but, Dad did not go to college, I won the state championships for debate last year and placed top 20 in the nation.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, Work experience, and depth in extra curriculars.
[] Weaknesses: No interview, test scores, my high school is really crappy, I did not have a plethora of ECs.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I’m not really sure. For some reason I was actually pretty hopeful. I spent 2 solid months reviewing this application and it was really well crafted to cover every aspect of my success. I have friends from debate who go to Yale and I certainly felt like I could compete with that level of intellectual rigor. [/li][/ul]General Comments: I am really hopeful for the regular decision round, but seeing how many deferrals there are is somewhat disconcerting. It’s just a bummer that being the valedictorian and most competitive student at my high school, I still can’t immediately get in to the school of my choice. Fingers are crossed for April.

Good Luck! Read your essays out loud to see any typos.

Dont feel like posting everything, but I’ll summarize.

[] Counselor Rec: Not very special, she doesnt know me that well

[] Weaknesses: SAT I scores, my second essay, Counselor Rec, lack of sports

It was…and it is.

deferred; please don’t force me to post stats

Deferred, don’t feel like writing stats, sorry. What I don’t understand is that many of other deferred students are better than half the admitted ones (e.g snipersas)! And looking at the deferred stats posted here, I lost all my hope for getting admitted in the RD pool. Would’ve had a better chance in Harvad, if I liked it better.
