[] Summer Activities: work and reading
[] Essays: don’t remember lol
[] Teacher Recommendation: both were great!
[] Counselor Rec: probably good
[] Interview: went WONDERFULLY, probably my best interview. We discussed medicine and bioethics and recommended books to one another!

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CT
[] School Type: Public, medium sized
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: 120k ish?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Waitlisted: WUStL (didn’t take a spot on their list)
Rejected: Caltech

[/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all accepted! You will all end up somewhere wonderful :)

Decision: Deferred → Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send.
[] ACT: 34 (34/34/33/36)
[] SAT II: Didn’t take.
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/267
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chemistry (5), Euro (5), USH (5), Biology (5), Music Theory (5/5/5), English Lang. (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): None.
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP US Gov, AP Macro, AP Physics B, AP Calc BC, AP Spanish Lang., AP English Lit., Chem Lab Assistant
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Regional Science Bowl Champion, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, Commended NMS
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Pianist for 12 Years (President of teacher’s student body), NHS for 3 years, Spanish Club for 3 years (Committee Member), Hospital Volunteer for 3 years (~250 hours), Intern for a Bioengineer (Research for about 150-200 hours), Student Board member for 2 years, Co-editor of school’s anthology, member of a Leadership Skills conference
[] Job/Work Experience: None (parents won’t let me work :/)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Hospital Volunteering, NHS, and volunteering with piano teacher at state/local events (~500 hours total)
[] Summer Activities: Research w/ bioengineer and summer classes at college (Calc I and Music Theory II)
[] Essays: Teachers and friends said they heard my voice and thought they were creative, but it’s hard to know for sure. One was about a spider () that attempted to show my quirky personality and the other was about a surgery that I had when I was younger which was more serious. Short Takes were borderline risky – some were safe, but authentic, and others were out there, but still true to me (CA essay: 9.5/10, Supplement essay: 9.5/10, Short Takes: 9/10, EC Short Answer: 8.5/10)
[] Teacher Recommendation: One is from my Spanish teacher of 3 years and another is from my AP Bio teacher who I’m assisting now and who I had for Honors Biology (9/10)
[] Counselor Rec: We know each other very well and I’ve been going into her office to talk to her regularly since April 2012 (9/10)
[] Additional Rec: From piano teacher of 5 years; talked about how I was her right hand man and how she wouldn’t choose anyone else and a ton of piano accomplishments (9.5/10)
[] Interview: I thought it went well; we talked for about 1.5 hours and I felt pretty good afterwards. It’s that feeling walking away that first time that always counts, right? We connected and had common interests. But it was also my first interview, so it’s not beyond reproach at all. I wish I could’ve said some things and not said some other things, but I feel like I left a good impression.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Oklahoma
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: >100K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Academics , Essays (hard to tell without being biased, though), Recommendations (at least I think so O_o)
[] Weaknesses: Lack of substantive ECs outside of piano and research (and I didn’t even submit an arts supplement or research abstract), small (probably fairly unknown) school compared to magnet and larger schools here, no “real hook,” possibly the interview (?)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because of all the other amazingly, amazing, like oh my goodness, amazing applicants.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UBC, UW, OU. Rejected at Yale-NUS.

[/ul]General Comments:
Congrats to everyone that got accepted!! You all seriously deserve it. To all future applicants: make sure to stay true to yourself. Sometimes, we get caught in all of the numbers and don’t take the time to dig deep within ourselves and present the most authentic picture of ourselves that we can to the admissions officers. Don’t trick yourself into manipulating your essay into the image of someone you wish you were. Write from your heart. Forget the numbers. You are you and no one can dispute that, call you too “low,” or laugh at you for falling short of your own expectations. Always look forward no matter what.

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, big awards, SAT IIs, ECs, essays?

Waitlisted: Harvard, Princeton, Rice, UChicago
Rejected: Northwestern, Yale
Either going to Pomona or Columbia
[/ul]General Comments:
Wasn’t unique enough? Lol. But looking back at my generally unremarkable high school career(compared to most CCers), I feel honored to have been accepted at the schools that I have gotten into.

For the future college freshman: Passion and heart and authenticity speak to admissions officers. Rip out everything that makes you YOU and drives your desire to keep living and pour it on your application. And even when some college decides that might not be enough, there will be another college that sees your value and gives you a chance.
Someone older once remarked to me (with this wise twinkle in his eye) that going to college was not nearly as difficult as picking a college. And now at the end of this four year odyssey through high school with the craze of admissions applications behind me, I am finally starting to see what he means. Good luck to you all! Remember that wherever you go, you are still the same person with the talents, capabilities, and passions that will carry you far no matter where you end up.

General Comments:
CONGRATS all, we made it, it’s been a wild ride. To all accepted, I’m sure you will go far! To all waitlisted, I feel you, and I’m sure we all end up in our right place, even if it doesn’t seem like it right now. Take the next couple (long, I know) months as an opportunity to grow, and take hard looks at the schools you have been admitted to. I firmly believe that we all end up in our right places. God has a plan for each of us. To those denied, I know it stings. But, as I said, we all end up where we need to be. I’ve had a great time with you guys these last few weeks. As Yale’s dean of admissions says, it’s “Their loss baby”.

Nobody gets in to Yale. It’s a conspiracy theory haha. Princeton baby.

[/ul]General Comments:

To all deferred students out there, don’t give up! I was crushed when I received that bad news back in December, but I didn’t dwell on it. I sent Yale a packet of new materials in late February (additional letter of recommendation, a new essay, and a letter describing how perfect Yale is for me and how perfect I am for Yale), and I think that’s what got me in. If you are not an active, committed defer, you probably won’t get in! Become a polite pest, if you will.
