Official Yale Class of 2017 SCEA Results Thread

I've always wanted to make one of these haha

Here's the template! Please answer it fully guys, I looked at decision threads like crazy over this process and I'm sure many of you did too. Future students use these as resources. Let's leave this for results. There are other threads for discussion and congratulations.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Eagle Scout, NHS, Tutor (not a lot of hours)
[] Summer Activities: Orchestra Camp Counselor, Boys State
[] Essays: Got them to where I thought they were excellent and stood out…
[] Teacher Recommendation: 2 excellent letters (one highlighting leadership, one anecdotal) “best student in 27 years of teaching”, “brightest student I have ever taught”. Counselor sent extra recommendation that was good, but generic, and unnecessary without my consent
[] Counselor Rec: Horrible! Generic and said I was an average kid
[] Additional Rec: From a political figure, did not see
[li] Interview: Ok. It was his first interview, just graduated.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, teacher letters of rec, political activism
[] Weaknesses: Counselor recommendation (ugh! and he sent extra recommendations to Yale that were not supposed to go which was used as the primary teacher recommendation -_-), lack of strong community service (too focussed on civil service)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I am not nationally recognized nor am I an athlete and/or legacy applying in early action. My counselors’ recommendation and mess up in sending letters weakened my application :([/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to those who made it. It is so hard to get in and you earned it. Hopefully I will join you at Yale after regular decision. Either way, I will be making a national impact in politics with or without Yale as my school :)

[/ul]General Comments:

To all fellow accepted students, congratulations, and I hope to see you in New Haven next year! To all those deferred and rejected, don’t lose hope! You are all great people, and I am sure that, wherever you end up, you will have success in life.
To all those who, months or years from now, will read this thread in order to gauge their chances at schools like Yale, remember that you need to come across as sincere and honest in your application. I come from a middle-of-nowhere school, have not won any major prizes, and was uninformed about the whole college process up until about a year ago. Nevertheless, throughout my whole high school career, I have done what I could with the resources I had. This is not to brag; it is to show that if somebody like me can make it, anybody can.

Good rest of the day to everyone, and good luck with the remainder of the college application process.

[] Summer Activities:

[] Essays: One about camp counselor, touching situation with a camper who had divorced parents, dealing with that as a 17-year-old “parent”. Probs 8-9/10 grading harshly. Edited A LOT. Other about music, what it means to me, how it’s changed my life etc. 7-8/10, also edited for weeks.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both teachers love me, one was 4 year squash coach and junior English teacher, other was 3 year science teacher and junior/senior elective teacher. Also doing an independent study with him this spring (Dark Matter!)-Both 9-10/10
[] Counselor Rec: Probably great, she knows me well and is definitely a pro at what she does. Thinks highly of me, I think. 8-9/10
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview: One on campus was great, flowed well and we talked the whole time. Obvious time limit however. 9/10. Alumni interview was good, although he did a lot of the talking. 8/10.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, Scores, ECs at large, Legacy
[] Weaknesses: Awards, In school ECs, no APs?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Legacy definitely helps, but I felt qualified in most aspects. [/li][/ul]General Comments:
CONGRATS all, we made it, it’s been a wild ride. For me now, a longer wider one. To all accepted, I’m sure you will go far and I hope to see you on campus, come regular round. To all deferred, I feel you, and I’m sure we all end up in our right place, even if it doesn’t seem like it right now. Take the next couple (long, I know) months as an opportunity to grow, and examine the other great schools that we are all so fortunate to try our hands at. To those denied, I know it stings. But, as I said, we all end up where we need to be. I’ve had a great time with you guys these last few weeks. As Yale’s dean of admissions says, its “Their loss baby”.

Ex post facto: All I want to know is why… Guess I’ll never know though.

deferred… will post stats later

Accepted! Will post later .

[]SAT II: Did not take.
[]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 UW; 4.531 W
[]Rank(percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/267
[]AP (place score in parenthesis): Chemistry (5), Music Theory (5/5/5), Biology (5), US History (5), English Language (5), European History (5)
[]IB (place score in parenthesis): Did not take.
[]Senior Year Course Load: AP English Literature, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Spanish Language, Independent Performing Arts
[]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar w/ Distinction, Commended NMS
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Pianist for 12 Years (President of teacher’s student body), NHS for 3 years, Spanish Club for 3 years (Committee Member), Hospital Volunteer for 3 years (~250 hours), Intern for a Bioengineer (Research for about 150-200 hours), Student Board member for 2 years, Co-editor of school’s anthology, member of a Leadership Skills conference
[]Job/Work Experience: None (parents won’t let me work :/)
[]Volunteer/Community Service: Hospital Volunteering, NHS, and volunteering with piano teacher at state/local events (~500 hours total)
[]Summer Activities: Research w/ bioengineer and summer classes at college (Calc I and Music Theory II)
[]Essays: Teachers and friends said they heard my voice and thought they were creative, but it’s hard to know for sure. One was about a spider (;)) that attempted to show my quirky personality and the other was about a surgery that I had when I was younger which was more serious. Short Takes were borderline risky – some were safe, but authentic, and others were out there, but still true to me (CA essay: 9.5/10, Supplement essay: 9.5/10, Short Takes: 9/10, EC Short Answer: 8.5/10)
[]Teacher Recommendation: One is from my Spanish teacher of 3 years and another is from my AP Bio teacher who I’m assisting now and who I had for Honors Biology (9/10)
[]Counselor Rec: We know each other very well and I’ve been going into her office to talk to her regularly since April 2012 (9/10)
[]Additional Rec: From piano teacher of 5 years; talked about how I was her right hand man and how she wouldn’t choose anyone else and a ton of piano accomplishments (9.5/10)
[]Interview: I thought it went well; we talked for about 1.5 hours and I felt pretty good afterwards. It’s that feeling walking away that first time that always counts, right? We connected and had common interests. But it was also my first interview, so it’s not beyond reproach at all. I wish I could’ve said some things and not said some other things, but I feel like I left a good impression.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Not yet.
[] Intended Major: Chemistry/Music Composition
[]State (if domestic applicant): Oklahoma
[]Country (if international applicant): Amurica
[]School Type: Mid-sized public school in rural-ish OK (not very competitive, usually only within top 5-10 of school)
[]Ethnicity: Chinese/Laosian
[]Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: >$100,000
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): state of residence (?), maybe being ½ Laosian (?)
[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: Academics (I literally took 12/16 AP classes available :/), Essays (hard to tell without being biased, though), Recommendations (at least I think so O_o)
[] Weaknesses: Lack of substantive ECs outside of piano and research (and I didn’t even submit an arts supplement or research abstract), small (probably fairly unknown) school compared to magnet and larger schools here, no “real hook,” possibly the interview (?)
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: been accepted at University of Oklahoma (& Honors College), waiting on two more colleges, debating on whether I want to apply somewhere else
[/li]

General Comments:
Congrats to everyone that got accepted!! You all seriously deserve it. To all future applicants: make sure to stay true to yourself. Sometimes, we get caught in all of the numbers and don’t take the time to dig deep within ourselves and present the most authentic picture of ourselves that we can to the admissions officers. Don’t trick yourself into manipulating your essay into the image of someone you wish you were. Write from your heart. Forget the numbers. You are you and no one can dispute that, call you too “low,” laugh at your inadequacy.

[] Weaknesses: no hook, no incredible awards, and the strength of the Yale applicant pool
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A lot of hard work and a lot of luck.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to OSU. Applied/will apply to CWRU, Rice (Rice/Baylor), Harvard, Stanford. Probably will end up at Yale!
[/ul]General Comments: There’s still a lot of the game to be played. To those accepted: Congrats! See you at bulldog days and possibly in New Haven next year! To those deferred/denied: I know the feeling of bad news because I played out that situation over and over again in my head. You put in so much hard work, and sometimes the dice just don’t roll your way. However, I am positive you will end up at really wonderful schools, even if they just don’t happen to be Yale. (Yale is not, in fact, the only wonderful school in the US.) Crossing my fingers for you on your RD apps! Best of luck! And to future applicants reading this thread: Work your ass off and you never know what might happen. Unhooked people really can get accepted!
