Decision: DENIED

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
National Merit Finalist (winner pending)
AP Scholar Distinction
Key Club RFL Lieutenant Governor
American Protege International Piano Competition 1st place
HOSA State (2012, 2013) 1st place
-Multiple state awards for piano
-Not that many

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Debate (Head captain)
Key Club (Lieutenant governor)
Operation Smile (President)
HOSA (President)
NHS member
Piano (11 years and still going :D)

Job/Work Experience: Held a job for all of my high school time (so since freshman year)

Volunteer/Community service: TONS of work within Key Club and Operation Smile

Summer Activities: Taught English in China, Key Club ICON

Essays: Wrote about experience with Key Club and piano

Teacher Recommendation: One of them was sub-par, the other was good, and the last one was really awesome.

Counselor Rec: Really awesome and captured my personality well

Additional Rec: N/A

Interview:
Princeton: Went fabulously, the interviewer and I had an amazing time hanging out and chatting
Harvard: Also went really well, but a bit boring because my interviewer was so old

Other

State (if domestic applicant): UT

Country (if international applicant): USA

School Type: Public

Race(s) (White, AA, AI/AN, Asian, NH/PI): AA

Hispanic (Y/N): N

Gender: Female

Income Bracket: Lower

Hooks: Lots of experience with piano, won international competitions, performed at Carnegie Hall. My main hook was my extra curriculars.

Reflection

Strengths: Extra curriculars, essays

Weaknesses: Test scores

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: Probably because my test scores were too average. Usually they might not have hurt me as much but acceptance rates were extremely low this year and applicant pool was absolutely massive (most schools broke the 30k mark)

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied:
Accepted: Honors access program at state university
Denied: Harvard, Princeton (ow), Columbia, Williams
Waiting: Stanford, Duke, Swarthmore

General Comments: We’ll never know the official reason we got rejected or waitlisted, so even though I know a lot of you (including me) are really upset right now, know that this college decision isn’t going to make your life. If you’re that set on an ivy you can transfer in your sophomore or junior year. Realistically though, your grad school is going to matter a lot more than your undergraduate even though yes, it is more desirable to go to an ivy league school for most of us as undergrads. I know a lot of extremely qualified people were rejected, and it hurts now but we’ll all end up going to the schools where we’re most qualified and deserving to go to.

And for those of you with very happy news indeed, congrats! I’m excited and happy for you guys as well and I know you’ll make the most of the Yale undergraduate experience and I wish you the best of luck there.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied:

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: RNG GOD

General Comments:
Congratulations to those who were accepted!
For those we weren’t and Yale was your dream school, it’s okay to be a bit bummed out!
I was rejected from my first choice and I was feeling bummy too, but I’m sure there are other wonderful colleges out there that you got accepted into!

Decision: DENIED

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
NHS

Conservative club (president, co-founder)
Rho Kappa
Rowing for 3 years
DECA
Quiz Bowl

Job/Work Experience: Not significant, I’ve been a referee for kids’ sports for 2 years

Volunteer/Community service: Summer sports camps, SAT prep classes, other various smaller activities.

Summer Activities: Children’s sports camps (see above), fixing/building old cars, engaging in creative tomfoolery like successfully attaching a leafblower engine to a bike (it goes 25mph)

Essays: I don’t remember them much, but I think the shorter ones were pretty solid, and I wrote my longer essay for Yale about how I put my entire truck together (engine, drivetrain, suspension, electrical, fuel system) from parts that did not belong together, and the challenges I overcame and the creativity and ingenuity I employed to get it done.

Teacher Recommendation: One was exceptional, didn’t see the other

Counselor Rec: Didn’t see.

Additional Rec: n/a

Interview: Very good, my interviewer loved me and said he wrote me a “glowing” rec.

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): FL

Country (if international applicant): USA

School Type: Public

Race(s) (White, AA, AI/AN, Asian, NH/PI): White

Hispanic (Y/N): N

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: Middle

Hooks: not anything in particular I guess, you can be the judge of that.

Reflection:
Strengths: All sat/act/ap scores except my sat writing and ap world, definitely the interview, uniqueness in interests?

Weaknesses: SAT writing, unweighted GPA

Why you think you were denied: other than writing and grades, I think I just didnt have anything that was spectacular enough for the admissions people to think I’m amazing

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Only heard back from state schools so far, and got in all of them.
waiting to hear from Vandy tuesday.

General Comments:
It probably seems like my essay about my truck was stupid and weak, but I assure you, I made it a very strong and reflective essay (unlike my SAT essay ;P). I have more community service than it looks, I just didnt have any particular thing that was major, maybe that hurt me too.

I think it’s also important to note than unlike many of the 30k people that applied this year, I have not focused my life for the past several years on getting accepted into top schools. I only applied to yale because of pressure from parents and close friends. I thought from the start that I would be attending Florida, and everything I have done in high school was for the sake of challenging myself and enjoying myself. Perhaps if my goal all along was to get into an Ivy League, things would be different, but I’m ultimately happy with my decisions. In life, it’s not the destination that truly matters, it’s the journey.

Decision: DENIED

Objective:

Summer Activities: Nothing of note

Essays: Way over on the risky side

Teacher Recommendation: Good

Counselor Rec: Really good.

Reflection:
Strengths: Nothing really.

Weaknesses: Everything, except perhaps EC’s and SAT II scores

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Accepted at NYUSH, F&M, Fordham. Denied at Brown, UChicago, Cornell, Colgate ++

General Comments:
No negative feelings at all, because I expected it. Kids out there, don’t take too much of a risk on your essay. If you’re not too good in your academics in the first place, it won’t do turd for you.

Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, URM, Common App Essay, Varsity Sports Captain, work with orphanage
Weaknesses: GPA, no research or incredible ECs.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was a solid applicant. Good test scores, good EC’s. Great essay. Good recs. Just a low GPA. Far too many B’s. I got in because I had a good application and a URM.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted: Rice, Northwestern, Cornell, WUSTL, Emory. Rejected Yale, Brown. Waitlisted Duke. Waiting on Georgetown.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I thought I was dead because of my 3.69 GPA but its not impossible. I’ve gotten accepted to a whole bunch of good colleges with it (granted, I am a URM). Still, a low GPA isnt the end of the fight if you have everything else going for you. Yale, in my opinion, is the best school in the country. I would’ve loved to go there but I knew it was a long shot. Good luck to everyone who goes there. You truly deserved it. For now, RICE CLASS OF 2018.

Job/Work Experience: Utility Worker at Meijer (midwest business), I recently played a full set with the Jackson Jazz Ensemble as the guitarist in the rhythm section (the Jackson Jazz Ensemble is a full adult group based in my county)

Volunteer/Community service: Thanksgiving and Christmas day volunteering at a local all-male shelter (for the addicted, financially unstable, etc.), helped paint/clean classrooms in my school after it underwent construction, tutor 6th grade percussionists for free, etc.

Summer Activities: I didn’t cure cancer, if that’s what you mean haha. Anyways, most (if not all) of my extracurriculars from above apply to this section, as well.

Essays: Very strong. I’d give the CommonApp essay a 10/10 and the Yale supplement an 8 or 9/10. I also submitted another, which I would give a 10/10 (this one explained my experiences in life that have defined me, as I had a rough childhood).

Teacher Recommendation: Very strong, although I did not see them. The two teachers I asked for recommendations from have good relationships with me, and I wouldn’t doubt that they were very flattering.

Counselor Rec: Also strong. I’m on a good basis with my counselor, and he occasionally recommends summer programs and other activities for me to try because of my academics.

Additional Rec: N/A

Interview: AWESOME. My interviewer was amazing, and we still contact each other almost every day! I even told him about my rejection and he seemed just as disappointed as me. Too bad the interview doesn’t count for much on the application, or I’m sure my chances would have been a bit better

Hispanic (Y/N): N

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: ~120k

Hooks: Essays (especially my last one), amount of extracurriculars (I didn’t list some of them)

Reflection:
Strengths: Essays, recs, interview, and I don’t know what else

Weaknesses: ACT score (not bad at all, but it’s on the lower end of Yale’s ACT scale— 25th percentile, to be exact)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied:
I know for sure that I was denied by two of my schools because I didn’t submit SAT II scores, which were required by those two schools. I can’t really say why I was denied by Yale— maybe it’s because of the vast amount of other qualified people, but that’s fine! And I’m pretty sure I was accepted to MSU based solely on my ACT score and devotion to the school (I did a few percussion camps there and I’ve been on their campus numerous other times). Looks like I’m a Spartan now, so Go Green!

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Accepted to Michigan State University, Rejected by Yale (the only one I cared about :/), Harvard (I didn’t submit SAT IIs, which are required), and Cornell (again, I didn’t submit SAT IIs, which are required).

General Comments:
I didn’t apply to any other schools because I knew I was going to MSU or Yale, if I was accepted. MSU has the highest ranked nuclear physics program in the country (primarily because of their cyclotron), so I have no problem going there. Plus, I get to room with one of my friends. Yale, on the other hand, has a higher ranked astronomy program, and my intended major is astrophysics (or “astronomy and physics” for Yale)… so I am slightly disappointed in that sense. And I would have loved to experience that residential housing system. I will be applying to Yale as a transfer after my freshman year at MSU, as soon as I boost my ACT and indulge in some research opportunities. One can still hope, right?

Anyways, congratulations to everyone accepted! I’m sure you are all ecstatic haha  And to everyone rejected: it was a great experience nonetheless, so perk up and enjoy the college you end up matriculating to!

Essays:
Common App: About producing electronic music. I liked it. 8/10
Supplement: About overcoming social anxiety and becoming SBP at my school somehow. Very personal, but kinda rushed. 7/10
Teacher Recommendation:
They were all pretty generic, even though the teachers that wrote them love me. I should have asked them to include specific examples in them but oh well. 6/10
Counselor Rec:
Probably pretty generic also, didn’t read it.

Additional Rec:
Sent in letter from my StuCo advisor. It was great. 10/10
Interview:
Amazing! Over an hour long, got along great with my interviewer. We had a ton in common - spent a lot of time talking about physics and dinosaurs and other fun things. 10/10

Accepted: UCLA, USC (Presidential Scholarship), UCSD (Regents Scholarship), a bunch of random private schools
Waitlisted: UChicago, WUSTL
Rejected: Stanford (REA), a billion other places

General Comments:
Accepted my spot on the waitlist, not gonna get my hopes up though. Looks like I’m gonna be going to UCLA! Overall, pretty happy with the way things turned out. I was just planning on going to one of the meh in-state Nevada schools until about halfway through last year when I jumped up into the top 5 in class ranking because I took my first AP classes haha. At that point I realized I might actually be able to get into some great schools. Kinda makes me wish I would have worked harder all throughout high school though - harder classes, more ECs, summer activities, all of that stuff because I felt I was lacking in those areas. Maybe I would have gotten accepted to a few more places (I’m still bitter about Stanford hahaha!) Overall though, I’m proud of myself for actually giving this a shot even though I was way behind the game coming into it. Congrats to everyone who got accepted!

Summer Activities: Student exchange program in Japan, Trips to China and Eastern Europe with my school (during the school year though), Basically just swam all summer

Essays: Common App was a 10/10 hands down. Supplements were average at best

Teacher Recommendation: Never saw them! But I am assuming they were strong because the teachers I chose loved me.

Weaknesses: SAT scores were pretty average, I didn’t cure cancer or save a village in Kenya

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I think my hooks had a major role in my acceptance. I also thought my Common App essay was very unique so it probably stood out from the crowd.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Accepted - Yale, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Cornell, Duke, Rice, UVA, UNC-CH, UF; Waitlisted - WUSTL; Denied - Princeton

General Comments: I was honesty in shock. One thing I think is important is to stand out! Your essays have to be personal and really convey some personality to the readers in order to make a lasting impression. Also It doesn’t matter if you aren’t in a million clubs as long as you’re dedicated to what you do and take leadership in it. Also one more misconception I want to clear up: for all of those who are weary of applying Undecided, I did and I still got in! General Comments: [time for a cliche comment, but true to me nonetheless] I was very fortunate compared to some of my other classmates, and got in pretty much everywhere. Honestly, I did not expect this to happen, and I was ecstatic that I did. Yale offers a different learning environment than my other schools, so I’ll definitely have to explore that. During high school I never really focused on “doing things to get into college;” simply “do things you love, and do it well, so you will have fun and success will naturally lead to college.” My leaving comment to the other high schoolers is “Follow you dreams, and don’t let anybody tell you ‘no.’ You really do miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Good luck!
