Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, grades
[] Weaknesses: EC’s are pretty minimal
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: EC’s, subjective stats as a whole, not a super interesting or dynamic person (?)
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- Stanford SCEA, University of Michigan EA, Berkeley, UCLA, UNC-Chapel Hill, Boston University, Rutgers. Waitlisted at UChicago. Rejected by Yale and Harvard.[/ul]
General Comments: Yale was the impossible dream for me, but I’ve wanted to go to college in California since I was twelve. After applying SCEA to Stanford I feared it was a mistake but I know now that it was absolutely not. I still love Yale and will probably apply for grad school, and I wish nothing less than the best for all the applicants in this crazy bloodbath that was 2014 college admissions.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2200 SS from 2 sittings (750 CR 690 M 760 W)

ACT:30 [not sent]

SAT II: 780 Literature & 760 French with Listening

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A BRITISH APPLICANT - All A*s GCSE & A2 predictions.

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): None, but probably one of the joint #1 based on exam results

Senior Year Course Load: English Literature, French, History, Latin A-levels.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Silver in Intermediate UK Maths Challenge, World Challenge Leadership Award, LAMDA Bronze medal, and then some school awards/music grades - really nothing big!

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Panel member for national museum youth forum; Theatre - local/regional/national productions; Music: Orchestral - soloist and ensemble; Founded/ran 2 international culture clubs at school; Co-leader of school Book Club for younger students; Chinese and Japanese language classes on weekends/evenings; Editorial writer for online blog aimed at students; 2 years of club gymnastics; 1 year rowing crew for School VIII

Job/Work Experience: 2 years of paid work in local retailers, 10-12 hours per week.

Volunteer/Community service: Weekly commitments as senior librarian at school library, 2 hrs/week for the past 4 years

Summer Activities: Cambridge University essay competition; National theatre residential course of rehearsals and productions in London; Travelling with family; Internship at marketing firm; Work experience at local bookstore.

Essays: Common App fine I think, at least I liked it(!!!), but supplement essays a bit rough, as an SCEA applicant this was my first US college application of them all so really had no idea what I was doing! After deferral I wrote in an update to my application, and used the space to express again why I thought Yale was the best place for me. I think that probably saved me after being deferred in the end!

Teacher Recommendation: Latin and History teachers - both showed to me and I felt they were pretty much ideal!!! I honestly even found them touching - both teachers have known me since I was at least 14

Counselor Rec: I used my head of year as a counselor since we don’t really have them in British schools! She also used to teach me Latin. She wouldn’t let me see the reference itself, but the teacher has known me for 7 years, and she led an world challenge expedition that I took part in through school - I think she could write pretty well about me from these experiences

Additional Rec: None

Interview: Felt it went well! Got on well with my interviewer although I’m not sure how much of a role it would have played in my decision

Other:

Country (if international applicant): United Kingdom

School Type: State (public to Americans) & selective

Ethnicity: White

Gender: M

Income Bracket: Applying for financial aid

Hooks: None

Reflection:
Strengths: I mean I think my ECs and academics were pretty ordinary, but still very solid so I suppose that helped; Possibly being an international applicant helped for geographical diversity? And I think my deferral letter added a lot to my app which helped convince them after initial deferral in SCEA round!

Weaknesses: I felt my Math SAT component was low but apparently it didn’t hold me back!!! Also the supplement essays could have been significantly better

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I honestly could not say, and the fact that this is just one of a lot of acceptances baffles me all the more ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Accepted Harvard, Columbia (likely letter and then John Jay Scholarship), Stanford and Duke; Waitlisted Dartmouth and UPenn; Rejected Princeton, Brown and Amherst

General Comments: DONT BE AFRAID INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS. I AM NOTHING REMARKABLE BUT I GOT ACCEPTED TO MORE PLACES THAN I EVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED. YOU GOT THIS.

Hispanic (Y/N):N
Gender:
Income Bracket: Above Average
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely nothing
Others Accepted from school: 3

Reflection

Strengths: Passion, Good Essays, Test Scores, Music, Unusual EC’s (volunteerism/teaching)/ Leadership, Very humorous tone to the application
Weaknesses: GPA, lack of major leadership positions, no huge awards
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays, Music, Community Service. But to be honest, I never expected Yale…
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UChicago, Dartmouth, Stanford, Princeton
Waitlisted: Columbia, Harvard
Rejected: UPenn Wharton (From deferral), MIT

General Comments:
I hate to be cliche, but future applicants: don’t ever give up! People told me I couldn’t get in to any HYPSM school. My parents, some friends, and worst of all myself. But here I am…
The odds were stacked against me: Asian…low GPA (compared to others from school)…sparse leadership positions…other great applicants from my school. But I just worked with what I had, put it all I had on the line, tried my hardest, and it paid off.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2320 super (800M, 800CR, 720W)

ACT:

SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Phy

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8 (but sophomore junior and senior are about 3.97, severe upward trajectory)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A

AP (place score in parenthesis): 5s on BC, US, Econs, Govs

IB (place score in parenthesis):

Senior Year Course Load: AP: Chem, Physics C, Stats, English Lit, Comp Sci (Independent), Honors Latin, Multivariable Calc

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NHRP

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Golf, President of Finance Club, President of Latin Club, some tutoring

Job/Work Experience: Worked since 14: first caddying, later worked in golf ops at a local country club, then worked as an intern at an energy consulting firm in Mexico City over the summer

Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring, the internship?

Summer Activities: Working, golf tournaments between 14-16 years old

Essays: Common App was solid, supplements were ok but could have been much better. My topic was good though when discussing how I overcame a lifethreatening illness and emergency surgery beginning of my senior year to maintain excellent grades and manage everything

Teacher Recommendation: Both were definitely excellent

Counselor Rec: I’m sure it was great, commented on

Additional Rec:

Interview: Great, we hit it off pretty well, it definitely didn’t hurt me

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): CT

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Public, Competitive (9 got into Harvard, 4 Yale, 2 Princeton, 3 MIT, etc.)

Race(s) (White, AA, AI/AN, Asian, NH/PI): Mexican-American

Hispanic (Y/N): Y

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: 150,000-200,000

Hooks: Hispanic

Reflection:
Strengths: Scores, Upward Trajectory, Rigorous Course Load, Why am I Using Random Caps, race, perhaps my genuine passion for learning coming through?

Weaknesses: low gpa (due to freshman year of high school)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I have no idea, last school I would predict to accept me

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied: Accepted: Uchicago, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Columbia SEAS (prescott davis scholar), Cornell, Michigan Engineering Rejected: Berkeley Engineering, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, MIT, Stanford

General Comments: I have only learned to expect absolutely nothing from the application process. Yale is the last school I expected to get into it (Princeton was my first choice) and I never thought I would be a good fit for it. I never showed interest (whereas I did at Princeton), and it’s basically more selective than Princeton, but they still wanted me! It all beats me, but I’m more than happy with the cards that I have been dealt. Choose the school you genuinely want to go to and apply there early, don’t try to find a school you think will accept you because frankly you can’t predict and so, you never know, you might just get into your Yale.

Decision: DENIED

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): M 610, CR 720, W 710 (2050)

ACT: E 35, M 30, S 33, R 33, W 8 (33)

SAT II: M II 600 (ew), US 730, Bio-M 700

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6, I think?

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 10%

AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro 5, Bio 4, English Lang 3, US 4

IB (place score in parenthesis): SL Physics 3… I haven’t taken the rest yet.

Senior Year Course Load: All IB

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Achievement Scholarship Program Outstanding Participant, All-American (T&F), AP Scholar (w/Honor), Certificat de Reussite

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): AFJROTC (flight commander last year as C/2nd Lt., Personnel officer this year as C/Capt.) and varsity track and field (might be team captain this year)—both for all for years

Job/Work Experience: N/A

Volunteer/Community service: All through JROTC

Summer Activities: Track

Essays: Eh, I thought my supplements for Yale were the strongest out of all of my supplements, but guess Yale didn’t like them, haha. My CA essay was alright, nothing spectacular. I thought it was very me though, considering the fact that I had originally wrote it as a letter to a friends then reshaped it as an essay.

Teacher Recommendation: One was very good (or so he said—I never actually read it) and the other was probably quite generic.

Counselor Rec: No doubt generic as my school is enormous so I hardly get any interaction with her.

Additional Rec: N/A

Interview: N/A

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): CA

Gender: F

Income Bracket: less than 100,000

Hooks: URM, but otherwise nothing.

Reflection:
Strengths: ACT score and dedication to ECs (guess that didn’t impress them though.)

Weaknesses: GPA, SAT/SAT II, low number of ECs, etc.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I wasn’t what they were looking for. Oh well.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied:
Accepted: UCSD, UCSB, CSUSM, NAU
Waitlisted: nowhere
Denied: Harvard, Brown, Penn, UCLA, UC Berkeley…

General Comments: I’ll be attending UCSD in the fall, so despite the huge disappointments (particularly in regards to Cal), I’m excited. After all, college is what I make of it! And undergrad doesn’t matter as much when you plan on going to grad/professional school anyways (or so I’ve heard)! Congratulations to all those accepted! You definitely deserved it! To those rejected/waitlisted, don’t sweat it too much—you’ll end up where you’re supposed to be and you WILL be successful! ;)

Since there is no guarantee that you will get into any extremely competitive school I’d say just aim high but don’t set your aspirations in stone directly on a certain college. Work hard, have fun, and show who you are in your essays. The rest will take care of itself. Congrats to those accepted!

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
General Comments: I only made an account to help future applicants so here I go… If you plan on applying to these schools, make sure you work on your personal statements and college specific essays carefully. Unless you have extremely impressive awards that’ll make colleges want you (eg Intel STS Finalist status), you need to show why you fit in and belong at the school you are applying to. Admissions rates have plunged into the single digits (below 5% for some schools). Adcoms have to make some tough decisions. Good luck to all!

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2240 + 2210, superscored 2290 (750 M, 740 V, 800 W)
ACT: N/A
SAT II: 800 Math II, 720 US Hist, 690 Lit (sent, but obviously not top 2 so I don’t know if they looked at it)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Just under 4, 3.98 or something. But my one B was an 89. But there were also two 89s on my mid year. I have an unweighted average of 95, and a weighted average of 102.5. (My school is very tough.)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A - My school doesn’t send (but I know that I’m only just in the top 20%)

IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP BC, Honors Diff EQ, AP French, AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Euro, Honors Orch, Honors Adv. Biotech.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, some kind of AP Scholar

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Cross Country (Captain), Track and Field (Captain), Orchestra - double bass for twelve years (Section Leader), lots of other clubs and whatnot
Job/Work Experience: Book shelver at a university library
Volunteer/Community service: Private lesson teacher, lots of stints with the NHS, gardening
Summer Activities: Interlochen (six week arts intensive) in 2012, BU RISE (research internship) in 2013.
Essays: Why Yale was 100 words of why I wanted to go, I named a lot of stuff (mainly things that really pertained to me, making it seem like a great fit). The questions were all funny or earnest. And my 500 word essay of choice was about how I’d gone to Montessori schools all my life through 9th grade – which was why I was driven to apply to Yale.
Teacher Recommendation: They must’ve been amazing! An admissions dean at another school wrote on my letter how engaged I was in class and what a positive impact I had on my school.
Counselor Rec: I love her! I know she wrote that I would’ve been a top student at my school if I had been a student freshmen year.
Additional Rec: Didn’t submit, though I had several.
Interview: It went really well!

Other:
State (if domestic applicant): TX
School Type: Top national public magnet
Race(s) (White, AA, AI/AN, Asian, NH/PI): White
Hispanic (Y/N): N
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~150,000, applied for FA because my brother is also in college

Hooks: Double bass player? Interesting story? I have no idea!

Reflection: I though I had no chance at all at Yale! Usually they only take people from the very top of the class at my school, but this year I guess they branched out some. After getting denied from Cornell, Dartmouth, and Penn, I was ready to be denied by both Columbia and Yale, but then I got the congratulations message from Columbia. After 10 minutes of screaming, I finally checked Yale and saw their congratulations message. It was insane.

Make clear how high the school is on your list by your essays. I worked so hard on the essays for Stanford, Columbia, and Yale – they were insightful and wonderful, etc. I didn’t think my admissions essay would even be read after they saw my grades, but I was wrong.

Also try to meet your admissions officer! When she visited my school, I made an attempt to make a connection, and I think that stood out when she was reading my application.

Strengths: Academics aren’t my main focus, I’m a really interesting person as well. At my school this year, we saw the top students get rejected from all these schools because they don’t really do anything except academics. My SAT Score was in range. I’ve also showed a lot of dedication to my activities (i.e. double bass for 12 years) and I said I wanted to continue them in college.

Weaknesses: Grades. This was one of the first years my school was unranked, so I’m sure they knew where I was in the class. SAT IIs. APs.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I have no idea. But I know I’m incredibly lucky.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/denied:
Accepted: Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Williams, Amherst, Pomona, Haverford, Davidson, and Emory
Waitlisted: Bowdoin, Wash U, and Claremont McKenna
Denied: UChicago (Deferred), Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn

General Comments: I have no idea where I’m going next fall! My top three choices were Columbia, Yale, and Stanford, and I was accepted to all three! This process has been completely insane and this was not the end results I expected at all. I’m going to have an incredibly tough decision ahead of me – while I was recruited by my D3 schools for sports, I would have to walk on to compete at a D1, and I don’t know if any of the three schools will take me.

Don’t be afraid to dream!

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I think I had a good application. I didn’t expect to be rejected straightforward, but it’s probably just because of the strength of the appplicant pool. Also, Yale’s engineering department is small, so I suppose it might’ve been more competitive?

Essays: It’s hard to judge these accurately. I thought they were good and true to who I am, but it’s impossible to know they were up to snuff.

Teacher Recommendation:
Calculus/Physics Teacher: I took a risk with this one. He had only known me for a little over three months, but he was an incredibly smart guy with an amazing story. He wrote his LOR about me teaching third graders about the different kinds of waves and how we use those waves in sonar and radar. Overall, 8/10.
Latin Teacher/Leadership Mentor: This one was probably fairly generic. He’s a smart, motivated guy, but I’m not sure about his writing style or ability. 7/10.

Counselor Rec: Outstanding. I was one of the only students from my school applying to this level of school, so I was sure to meet with my counselor numerous times. She knew me exceedingly well as we had worked together on a number of projects and presentations. 10/10.

Interview: A miscommunication on location meant that things started off a little late, awkward, and hurried, but after about ten minutes, things went well. The conversation wasn’t all that intellectual or outstanding, but it was smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable. He wrote well about me, but I’m sure it was nothing beyond the usual.

Reflection:
Strengths: ACT, Letters of Rec (I think), Leadership, School Involvement

Weaknesses: SAT IIs, Essays, Interview was nothing special, Summers weren’t spent doing the “right” things

Why you think you were denied: I guess I didn’t have that one special/different/unusual think that could’ve put my application over the edge. I was very well rounded, and this isn’t exactly what a school like Yale is looking for. I also began preparing fairly late so this could have shown through.

Reflection
Strengths: Academic accomplishments and extracurriculars.
Weaknesses: Lack of big leadership roles.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I received a Likely Letter in January and was invited with about 100 other Likely Letter students to Yale Engineering and Science Weekend (YES-Weekend) , so I think that my accomplishments in science were a really big pull for Yale. I think I also just had a pretty solid application overall with my scores, academics, extracurriculars, and awards.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted early to Stanford, Harvard regular decision, and Duke. Accepted to Georgia Tech and UGA Honors early as well.

General Comments: I was absolutely impressed and enthralled by Yale’s campus and community when I visited YES-Weekend; they really threw everything they could at us to entice us to go to Yale and it worked reeeeeally well. I’m very drawn in by the great community feel that Yale has, and I love the residential college system. Plus I find that Yale is really trying to ramp up its sciences and is very willing to allocate plenty of money and resources for undergrads in science and engineering. I was totally set on Stanford before getting the Likely from Yale, but after YES-Weekend, I find it much harder to make a final decision because they are very different universities, but both offer so many great opportunities. Can’t wait to go to Bulldog Days and meet all the other admits too!
