So just how many people are we talking about in a class of 1300ish? How many recruited athletes? URMs are really a very small number. Legacies overlap a little with recruited athletes and urm . Anyone know how many recruited athletes in a class?

I don't see very many URM's. I don't kow, I'm apparently one, but my admission officer told me my essays were the extra boost for me.

Perhaps that is it? The essays? I've always believed that if the essay doesn't show the person's soul, they are screwed. I had typos in mine, but I believe it talked about me as an individual. I know the private school 50 mile away had like 7 applicats, 5 rejected, 2 defered. All URM.

I tried so hard to show my soul....that's why it hurt so much when they deferred me. It would have been no big deal if I wrote about "the memorable moment I broke the 7:30 barrier on the mile" or something. But this was a confessional expression of the workings of my mind, the stupidity of self-inflicted agony and my hope for a clearer understanding of the objective world in the future.

So then I got the automated letter, "The Yale Admissions Committee has completed its evaluation of this year's Single Choice Early Action candidates and has voted to defer action on your application." Ouch, ouch, ouch. So they don't like my soul? They think I'm disturbed? Base? Unworthy? I started thinking I should have written about the 7:30 mile barrier because I would have looked artistically normal, at least. Maybe they don't like hippies.

I had a typo in it, too. The margin cut off a crucial "I." Maybe I should have had more :)

All things beings equal (and frankly do you really think there's a huge difference between the kid who can get a 1500 on v&m and the kid who gets the 1600 {and I'm closer to the 1600 so don't give me grief}
where was I ?
all things being equal, only then, yes it makes a difference to be an athlete they want or an individual from an under reqruited minority-for getting in.
I am neither and think its fine/great/actually imperative, that the schools look out for both. Athletes are doing their school work and their sport. And our society has a long long way to go to bring individuals with minority backgrounds into the mainstream economically, et.al---------the faster the better.
I am just asking, cause I don't know the numbers and wonder where it all leaves me ---not feeling sorry for myself, just curious and finding it hard to wait until April when I will get in nowhere, everywhere, or somewhere.

Hey, we're all going to end up somewhere great. Might be Yale, might not.

I grudgingly concede that it's good that colleges try to balance out the student body. It's much better than admitting people purely by test scores and grades. But I shall continue to feel sorry for myself. It gives my mind something to do for the next two months :D

ceteris paribus, legacy, urm, and athletics give a boost. And why not? It's a function of scarcity anyways.

[] Strengths/Weaknesses:
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Probably deferred due to being an unknown...I'm sure the AdComm freaked out about my unusual background and tumultuous life experiences I've had recently that forced me to attend 3 different high schools and take off a year to work full-time (I'm probably 1-2 years older than your normal college applicant). Also, a lot of my ECs are unusual in nature (not your typical Ivy-league aspiring applicants ECs), and I was unable to explain them all in the application (a bit rushed, I must say). I sent off a letter of 'extreme-interest' in February, but I doubt I'll get in.

Good luck to us all on March 30th!!!

Congrats all guys who have been accepted to Yale so far !
Now I have a small question for acceptees : Do you hold that if we apply to Yale through EA decision, we will be of greater advantage ? The reason for my query is in my country so far the vast majority of dudes who were accepted applied EA ? There is a very tiny number of RD dudes accepted :)

It's because they like us EA people more :0

The Yale office of admissions likes to play mind games with EAers by deferring them and accepting them en masse in the RD round.

Decision--- DEFERRED

My stats:

SAT I: 640Critical Reading, 640 Writing, 760 Math
SAT IIs: 690 Biology, 730 Chemistry, 740 US History
Rank: 4 out of 124
APs: AP Scholar ; by the end of the year, I'll have completed seven courses.
Bio-5, Chem-5, US History-5
Teacher Recs: I saw one of them and it was amazing. The other I was unable to see, but im sure it would rock your socks off.
Counselor Rec: I think it was pretty good, altough I didn't see it. My Counselor loves me.
Extracurriculars: Ive been in Student Council for four years, been everything from Vice-President to Treasurer. I've been in Operation Smile for four years as well. I'm currently the Vice-President of the club, and weve raised over 130,000 cordobas. Also I'm in United Hands, The Newspaper, Literary Magazine, Knowledge Bowl, been taking piano for six months, and Tennis my entire life.
Hook: I'm passionate about Science(I have a special relationship with Chemistry) and helping out.
Essays: I wrote one essay about how I conquered my fear of public speaking and stuttering. Some said it was really impacting and they cried. I thought it was strong, especially the introduction. I wrote another essay about how I want to mix my passions about Science and Engineering with my passion for helping my community.
Awards- AP Scholar, Presidents Award(10th, 11th), Awards for Excellence In AP Chemistry, Physics, AP Biology, English and AP US History.
Location: Managua, Nicaragua.
Other Thoughts: My nickname around school is Harry Potter.

The acceptance rate (traditionally) for those deferred from EA during RD is around 12-13% (based on the deferral letter I received). So yes, it's still higher than applying purely RD, but still very slim chance.
