Official Yale SCEA Decisions- Class of OHLEVEN ('11)

i was DEFERRED!!!!!
I'm so sad ............. (sorry ive been watching this forum for ages but hardly ever post) well here are a few stats

SAT: 2140 (CR750, M680, W710)
IB: 44 points
EC's: loads: debate world championships representing country, piano - winner of national competition at highest level

etc. etc. etc.....

I was deferred, with a 2400 on my SATs and straight-A transcript (valedictorian). I also had lots of leadership, extra college classes, outside research, good recs and essays, the whole works. This sucks. I feel like I've worked so ridiculously hard all through high school to receive good news at this time, and it's such a slap in the face. I don't know what I did wrong, but I hope I can figure it out before I send my other apps in.

How do you know you did something wrong?

To buwinnifred:

Let me tell you right now I severely doubt you did ANYTHING wrong. As people have said time and time again, Yale and the other Ivies are all crapshoots. I'm sure almost all of us deferred candidates are very well qualified, perhaps moreso (or so we'd like to think) than our accepted counterparts, and I'm sure some of the rejected candidates are also deferred/accepted quality. When you get to a level as high as Yale's, the line between applicants blurs. I'm sure you'll go to a great school, and it might even be Yale. Hopefully with me too :).

I think early acceptance depends a lot on secret standards/maneuvers/plans at the college so if you got deferred or rejected, don't despair--you may very well get in regular, and anyway it has little correlation with your chances at other colleges, since you don't know the special reason they wanted your accepted counterparts. We don't know much about this process, and if you look at the stats on this site itself, you can see that there is just no way to discern the standards used by the college.

I'm In!!!!!!!!!!!

EliHopeful--Thanks a lot for your comment and for your general positivity.

My school had a tough break this year...all 4 of us were deferred....including

1) our valedictorian, 16 AP's by grad, national deca awards, lived in 3 countries, speaks 3 non-English languages, will be seeking a 4th consecutive state title in tennis this spring
2) a kid with 6 generations of legacy; very very active legacies at that
3) a 4.0 girl who has dedicated her life to tap/interpretive dance
4) myself

I don't know why this happened or what happened, but as many people mentioned, other than people who you just KNOW are going to get in, it's so random...it's ultimately pointless to worry at all about it

And btw Cozmo, the irony here is that I didn't drink a drop last night lol

I was DEFERRED. sigh. i feel like crap. wait how many EA deferrees get in RD???

[] Other stats (Awards, etc.): Eh, some local awards, AP Honors, etc. Nothing special.

[] Job/Work Experience: Research for a professor at Princeton since the summer
[] Essays (subject and responses): One was on Freudian dream analysis and how it pertained to my life in drama (funny), the other was on my solo trip to Paris this summer. People have told me they both kicked ass. I think they're what tipped me over into the deferred pool with all you other amazing people.
[] Teacher Recs: Haven't seen them, but I assume pretty good. My professor whom I work for also wrote me a rec--he offered, so I assume that one's good as well.
[] Counselor Rec: He read me this one--it was really good. My school is tiny, so our counselor knows us pretty well.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Intense alumnae interview! At a little coffeehouse in my town--she seemed VERY focused on getting down everything I said. At the end she said she was really impressed with me, though.

Can't wait to get accepted! Actually, the fact that 61% of us got deferred makes me feel somewhat good. The range of deferred people is humongous!

Remember that the deferred admit rate is a lot higher than the regular RD admit rate. Last year the regular RD admit rate was 5.8%!!! Look at it this way: for the deferred applicants, it's like we never applied early, and we are applying RD. Except we're special: we get a higher admit rate than normal RD applicants. That actually seems like a pretty good deal! We were going to have to wait till April anyway for our RD app news.

[] Strengths: Leadership skills, personality (but I dont know if they saw it)

[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
[/li]Honestly I don't know. Despite my school's amazing response from Harvard EA, none of the Yale EA applicants were accepted. I was sad for a while, but seeing many many qualified people getting deferred on CC, I feel more comfortable with the decision now.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
First of all, CONGRATS to those who got in! I think I'm gonna be ok for the next 4 months, and we'll see after that. Hopefully I'll come back with a smiley face :)

Hey guys,

I can tell you from looking at profiles on the admitted student website that many, many EA Admits are athletes. Therefore, you should have an additional reason not to despair!: although the RD admit rate is lower than the EA rate, the EA pool is crowded by those who already know that that are going to get in. As one of the few non-legacy, non-athlete, non-URM, non-prestigious-private-school admits from my applicant-heavy Northeast-USA region, I can tell you that getting into Yale, though it requires LOTS of hard work, also requires a certain amount of good fortune. Hopefully--and probably--many of your fortunes will take a turn for the better in April.

And out of curiosity--Does anyone know what the EA admit rate was this year? It only seems to mention # of applicants on the Stats page...

hey onetimequestion

i think i saw a 19.7% admit rate on the official Yale website. it's weird cause I can't find it anymore, but if i remember it correctly, it was 19.7% admit, a little more than 60% deferral, and about 20% rejection.

lhh421, it's in the FAQ part of your decision screen.

Admit rate: 19.7% (17.7% last year)
Deferral rate: 61% (48% last year)
Rejection rate: 18% (33.3% last year)

With such a huge increase in deferrals, the acceptance rate of deferrees is bound to drop, unless if they take more of us for a better yield if they get fewer apps again.
