*Official Yale Wait-list Thread - Class of 2016* (if I may)

I just thought it would be worthy to start a new thread for us waitlistees of the class of 2016! :) And I hope this thread can provide us with some useful information too. I really want to go to Yale so I put my mind to work and did some calculations.

The only useful data is of 2006: waitlist: 728 placed, 204 accepted, 56 admitted
More data: - Yale's yield was 65,9% for 2015
- Yale's 2015 size was: 1,351 students
- Yale admitted 1975 students this year
- Yale waitlisted 1001 students this year

Assuming that yield rate stays the same (which won't happen of course) then 1975*0.659=1301. So 1301 students of the 1975 who got admitted will enroll. If we assume that the size of the class will be the same then there's room for 50 students (supposedly, students who will be taken off the waitlist). And also, if the wait list yield is the same of 2006, then of the 1001 that were put on the wait list this year, only 280 student will accept to remain on the wait list.

Thus, 50/280=18% chance that if you accepted to remain on the wait list you will be taken off it.
------------------------------------> 18% CHANCE!!!!
Nearly 1/5 chance. I don't know if this makes me happy or not, but I had to do it. Maybe the yield will come down or whatever. Hope the numbers are right though

But also, where are you going to college (if the wait list doesn't work)? What do you want to major in? Tell us everything!!!!!!!!!! :) (:

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! Hope you make it

You can get the information on admissions and waitlist numbers from the CDS (Common Date Set) in sections C1 and C2 for the last ten years.

[Common Data Set (CDS) | Office of Institutional Research](Common Data Set | Office of Institutional Research)

According to the Common Data Set . . .

NUMBER OF STUDENTS TAKEN OFF YALE’S WAITLIST

2011: 104 admitted
2010: 98 admitted
2009: 7 admitted
2008: 59 admitted
2007: 50 admitted
2006: 56 admitted
2005: 0 admitted
2004: 8 admitted
2003: 0 admitted

Hey I’m on the waitlist also! I think 18% is a bit too high however. According to a Yale Daily News article in 2010, only “around two-thirds of students waitlisted by Yale choose to stay on the waiting list, Brenzel said”. So I think the chance is even slimmer than that unfortunately.

Don’t linger onto hopes of getting admitted off of the waitlist, it’ll only make the next few months hell. I accepted a spot, but I am very happy with the schools I got accepted to!

^^
The goal of the thread isn’t to get our hopes up, I really just wanted people on the wait list to talk about themselves, their possible majors, colleges they have been accepted to, etc… but I couldn’t help trying to predict how many students could be taken off the wait list this year based on the class size and whatever, even if it is way off x) So where did you get accepted?

@HippyHoo you’re probably right, but I didn’t have that information so I just looked at the 2006 wait list yield. Where are you from? :)

I agree that we should psychologically ignore the chances of being admitted from the wait list (let’s face it, they’re slim no matter how you slice it). Better to focus on the positive! For me, I’ll be going to Brown if Yale doesn’t work out. Any one else know where they’re going next year (sans Yale, obviously)?

Did you guys send update materials or write up a letter to Yale?

How do they contact waitlistees on their admission decisions? Is the process the same for internationals?

@seawaves, From other waitlist threads, Yale calls you to notify you that you’re accepted. I’m not sure what they do if you are denied off the waitlist.

does anyone know when did they call the “waitlistees” last year?

BTW, I’m from Chile and want to study Music at Yale, I’ve been told it is very good especially for composition (also they have a SICK orchestra). Here’s to you BubbleGumSword.

I think the earliest ‘wave’ of offers come out on May 4th last year, but we gotta wait and see how high is Yale’s yield this year.

When do you think the yield rate will be published?

Last year it was in August; so I guess we’re not gonna find out the yield rate anytime soon.

@jumpercable I think no one is denied off the waitlist until it’s closed. They keep it open until a certain date; if you have not received a call by then they will send you an email telling you that the list is closed. I’m not sure what the date is but I think I read somewhere 30 June but maybe I’m confusing it with some other date.

@hippyHoo and stabatmater I suspect the Yield is coming up this year so that’s bad news

“Jon Reider, director of college counseling at San Francisco University High School, said the fact that Yale’s yield has decreased by 5 percent since 2007 is a direct result of Harvard’s and Princeton’s decision to eliminate their early action and early decision admissions programs. Yale was losing out on students who applied to Yale early but really wanted to go to Harvard or Princeton, he said, causing Yale’s yield to drop. But, he said, the fact that Harvard and Princeton are both bringing back early admissions this year will raise Yale’s yield next year.”

[Yield rate falls again for class of 2015 | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2011/aug/31/yield-rate-falls-fifth-straight-year/)

It makes sense but maybe it won’t rise too much

@BubbleGumSword, good investigating! I tend to agree with you on the higher yield this year. Of course, I hope for the opposite.

June 30, exactly what we heard from an “on Duty Admissions Officer” when we visited Yale last month.

^ These next to to months are going to be hell!
@cahsparent I wish they could give us the yield already and not just in August; it would be so much better for my sanity.

MIT just closed their wait list this afternoon. They didn’t take anyone from the wait list, for the first time in 7 years, due to a 70+% yield. Any thoughts on what this might predict for the Yale yield?
