OH College Tour-Requesting Suggestions/Guidance from OH Natives and Experts

We are thinking about seeing these schools in this order. If there are other schools that we should check out, or a better itinerary please help me out. Also, any hotel suggestions/restaurants/must sees welcome. We have never been to OH.

We will travel to OH on the weekend.

Day1-
See Wooster on Monday morning. It sounds like at least a 3 hour visit. If I am wrong, please tell me (interview, info session, and tour). We are debating whether to rush over to Denison, or just see Wooster. I am going to say Wooster only for now.

Day2-Denison in the morning, and Otterbein in the afternoon (Is this a 30 minute drive?).

Day3-Ohio Wesleyan in the morning, and then drive to Earlham in Richmond, IN (Is this a 2 hour drive?).

Day4-Earlham in the morning and Wittenberg (Springfield, OH) in the afternoon (Is this a 1 hour drive?).

Day5-Marietta College and then drive home (NJ). Oh, and is Springfield to Maritta nearly a 3 hour drive?

If my drive times are way off base, please let me know that too.

Here's a Google Map of your proposed itinerary with estimated drive times.

I've posted a visit trip on [Wittenberg a few weeks ago (please excuse the typos...I should have edited it a bit closer when I wrote it up). I'd be curious about your impression of Ohio Wesleyan...when I drove through the town/college I was very disappointed with its look and feel and the conditions of the athletic facilites.

Lodging Suggestions:

On day 3...there's a good Hampton</a> Inn in Sunbury, Ohio](<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/wittenberg-university/4941667.html%5DWittenberg%5B/url">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visits/wittenberg-university/4941667.html) about 10 minutes from Ohio Wesleyan.

Day 5: B&B in Marietta Ohio: I've stayed at the House on Harmar Hill. It's an old Victorian restored by a retired Navy Admiral and his wife. Great naval stories and big hearty french-toast breakfast.

Possible visit spots:

In Richmond Indiana you might want to visit the Tom Raper RV...they give away free hot dogs in their showroom and you can see all the big luxury motor homes.

In North Dayton, there's a very nice, free US Air Force Museum near Wright Patterson Airforce Base.

The Dayton Art Institute is a really nice place to visit and is free as well.

Marietta has a river boat museum. Fenton Glass is across the river in West Virginia.

Also...if you have time...on your way to Marietta, you might want to stop and see Ohio University as well.

Stitchintime, Thank you so very much! This is most helpful. I am going to read your Witt review after I post this, so thanks for telling me that you reviewed it.

I did read about OWU's athletic fields, but I believe that I read in someone's post that they are scheduled to be redone. I don't know if this is the case. I have read a lot of disappointing reviews about OWU. Some prospies liked the school a lot, so we will see for ourselves. We not going to visit just yet. We're only in the plannning stages for the moment.

Editing this to say that I just read your report about Wittenberg. It sounds like a very fair and objective report, and I found it very helpful. Thanks.

"Day2-Denison in the morning, and Otterbein in the afternoon (Is this a 30 minute drive?)."

northeastmom,
It is a little less than a 30 minute drive.

It sounds like you are looking at small schools, but if you are interested in looking at something bigger, Ohio University (as suggested) is a possibility. It is in southeastern Ohio. My son goes there and has found it to be a good fit. Miami is another school you may want to consider if it doesn't have to be small. Miami is in southwestern Ohio. It has a very good reputation academically, but it all depends on what you're looking for. Miami has a beautiful campus but my daughter said it was "too white and too preppy" for her.

Have fun on your trip. My daughter and I have some good memories from ours. I miss those days!

These trips are vey nice memories!

You are correct, we are looking for small schools. I really think that they would be a better fit for my son. Which school has the Gateway Scholarship, if you know?

Kenyon and Oberlin are two very fine schools worth checking out while you're in Ohio

rcefn, thanks for the suggestion, but those are too much of a reach.

Have you considered Hiram? It is pretty amazing - see the Hiram web site or better yet read the Hiram material on the Colleges That Change Lives web site or in the book. It is maybe 75 driving miles northeast of Wooster; not too far east of Cleveland; a small college, a beautiful campus, school spirit, and an academic plan that many kids love, "The Hiram Plan"
from Hiram College - Visitors
Hiram is the only college in the country that offers students two formats for scholastic study. Called the Hiram Plan, our academic calendar improves on the traditional, two-semester structure common to most liberal arts schools. Like other schools, Hiram's academic year consists of two, 15-week semesters. Each semester is further divided into two sessions- a 12-week, during which students take three academic courses, and a 3-week, when students focus on a single course.

I did think about Hiram, but when I viewed their website, it seemed like less of a good fit, and I think that it was a bit too rural. I might rethink this some more, so thanks, midwesternmom.

I'm a fan of Wooster, but....

other schools that might be considered:

John Carroll University
Heidleberg
Muskingum
Mt. Union
Ohio Northern

Most of these are out of your way based on your trip plans, but may be worth looking into for a future visit.

Stitch--I wish I had known about the RV visit when we were in Richmond! I must tell you that the restaurant scene there is VERY lacking; I was directed to a cafeteria (can't remember the name but I'm sure it's in the phone book) as the best restaurant in town! The fried chicken was good--but not for 4 straight years.

FLVADAD, thanks. I thought that Richmond has a Red Lobster, IHOP, the exciting new restaurant called Chipotle, Cracker Barrel, a pizza place, and some sort of deli sandwich place.
I am definitely keeping the RV place in mind for lunch (you never know).

If you are heading up towards Cleveland, you might also want to add Allegheny to your trip. Great school and I know a number of happy parents and students.

I want to mention the University of Dayton. We got a very personalized community feeling on campus. If you're in the area, it might be worth a visit.

We are not Catholic, so I eliminated Dayton. boysx3, we visited Allegheny on another trip. You are right, that it is on the way toward OH. boysx3 and my-3-sons, thank you both for these suggestions.

I second the University of Dayton. My DD is a sophomore there and loves it. She thought she wanted a small school also, until we visited a few. UD is not too small (~7000 undergrads), ~95% residential campus, and definitely a community feeling which is part of the Marianist philosophy. Definitely the friendliest student body of the schools we visited.

UD would be in between Earlham and Wittenberg.

I would suggest that you overnight near Polaris which has lots of hotels, tons of eating and a large mall. The drive from there to OWU is very straightforward (west on Polaris parkway and then North on route 23 and takes about 25 minutes).

Putting in another plug for Hiram - the kids that I know who attend it are quite happy. It is rural but not far from Cleveland, and kids frequently come up for various events. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Northeastmom -- Your trip itinerary looks well thought out to me. The only thing you might want to consider is the time from Denison (Granville) to Otterbein. There has been a lot of construction going on with Route 161 which can precipitate some traffic back-ups at certain times of the day. When I was in Columbus last fall I had local knowledge (my sister-in-law) to help navigate around the trouble spots. You might want to build in an hour between Denison and Otterbein just to be on the safe side.

hudson, I just read this now. Thanks for the heads up about traffic.
