Oh gawd oh gawd! I really need advice. How important is it to attend an Ivy League?

Okay, so I had a conversation with one of my teachers who is very experienced with the college admission process.
When I told her that I was going to apply ED to Johns Hopkins (be/c i want to be an international relations premed) she scoffed and said "you have to apply to an IVY ED. Dont waste it on JHU--dont take the easy way out."

Well I actually like JHU but my dream school is UPenn or Columbia. I was just discouraged be/c my SATs were quite low (1950s--- but I am black). Should I ED a lower ivy or should I just stick with JHU?
I am so confused and apps are due on Monday -_-.
And yes I MUST ED somewhere :p

It’s a tough choice. I’m not sure to be honest… ED Penn might work but ED Johns Hopkins is definitely safer. But you don’t NEED an Ivy ED lol. That’s just silly.

If you’re doing any school ED, make sure that it is absolutely positively your #1 school. If you aren’t sure which school to choose for ED, you probably shouldn’t apply ED. Just saying.

Also, if you’re not sure you can pay for a particular college, don’t apply there ED. You might not get what you want for financial aid (but you still have to go).

If you your dream school is really UPenn or Columbia, then go for it ED, but don’t do it just because what your teacher said because, honestly, based on what she said, she doesn’t sound that experienced at all

^^^^ Our president is black. We can’t use being black as an excuse for anything anymore.

hmm thanks guys. ugh this is very confusing for me lol. I am going to apply ED somewhere but maybe i just need to vent to my counselor first

“Our president is black. We can’t use being black as an excuse for anything anymore.”
lmfaooo

You laugh cause it’s true.

ilovefgump,
regardless of a black president or not, affirmative action is still alive and well. i did not bring the statement up to use as an excuse

I know. I was just pointing it out.

My president is black…

omg lol…

Choosing whether to apply to an Ivy league school or not for your ED is about as important as choosing what TV to get. Although the TV choice might be a bit more important.

My president is black, my lambo’s blue.
Anyways… your teacher needs to rethink. There are TONS of universities with an Ivy Caliber level of education. You have to choose the best for YOU. It’s not your teacher’s place to say where to apply.

Btw, don’t use black as an excuse. It’s the copout way we’ve allowed ourselves to have. I don’t see it as an excuse.

^ THANK YOU. It’s not an excuse.

My president is half-white, but his lips are purple.

You’re asking this question after 500 posts here?

once again, i wasnt using it as an excuse -_-

lol im just confused.
but i think i might just stick with jhu? but idk! omg -_-

Where do YOU want to go?

That is the question. It’s not where your teacher said YOU SHOULD apply.

Have you visited the campuses?
This is so cliche, but where can you see yourself at?

JHU is a great school, so it’s not really “the easy way out”.
Where would you go if your teacher didn’t say that?
I’m sure you already though of that, in the back of your mind.

if my teacher would have never opened her beak, i would have submitted my JHU supplement already with the ED agreement.
and you know what? i would love to get into that school.

Of course there are certain things that I dont like about JHU–such as grade deflation…or the “competitive” environment. However, I spoke to current students and they said that this wasn’t true depending on my major.

Plus JHU has a stronger international relations program than UPenn (which is what I want to major in).

and noimagination…yea after 500 posts, I havent made up my mind.

I visited UPenn and Baltimore. I like both.

If you like two schools, don’t apply ED
