What kind of criteria makes something your major? Like, what do you guys consider when selecting one?

I'm not a senior yet- I'm a junior in high school. However, just the other day I heard my mom talking to the mom of a girl who had majored in statistics, and had gone through all four years of statistics before realizing that she wanted to change her major. I really don't want to be that kind of person, but right now I still have no clue as to what I want to do. I know it's kind of early for me, but I hear that what major you choose really affects which college you should go to, and I do want to focus my college search. (I'd prefer it if you guys didn't tell me that it's too early for me, because it's not like anything will change in a year anyway.)

I guess I'm into science? Physics was a lot of fun, and it was the kind of thing I was naturally good at, but according to my father it's difficult to research in that area. Plus, it's not like majoring in physics would mean I'd be playing with kinematics forever. For a while, I was really into research, but now I'm taking an engineering class and I think engineering is pretty cool, too. It's easier to make advancements in biology and biochemistry, but I still don't know if I like biology or not (I'm taking it this year) and chemistry was kind of confusing.

So, people who know what they're doing, how did you choose your major? Why did you choose your major, and have you made mistakes?

You seem very undecided still as to where you are headed, which is fine. A lot of people have a hobby, that they do all their life, and turn into a career. My sister, when she was 4 said she wanted to be a doctor, and she still does(now shes 20). I have always been drawing my whole life, which is why I chose to major in Architecture. Sometimes its not as easy though, my sister and I got pretty lucky kinda knowing what we wanted to do pretty early on. You are only a junior, and deciding what you want to do for a good portion of your life is a hard choice to make, but it can change, and there’s alot of freedom in choosing. What would you consider fun? Thats where you should start in determining what you would like to do.

Many undecided students start college by taking the prerequisite courses for several majors that may interest them, then decide based on how they like those courses. The main thing to watch for is if any of the majors need to be started early due to prerequisite sequencing (e.g. physics), the student needs to “sample” those courses early on rather than waiting until later.

You can go into some colleges as undecided and choose later with more experience, although of course it is better to have a solid idea earlier. you can find online some pretty accurate personality inventories that match you to career ideas if you’re interested in doing that.

In HS, I liked Math and Science more than English and History. I didn’t like any one science best…So I decided to do engineering…specifically electrical engineering. You need to be good at math and be able to think logically.
