Ok, so I know that there’s a thread already to ask questions, but it’s too long and I really have no time to look at it all. I perused through the posts and couldn’t find my answer. So I want to know if someone want to help me with my question:

In the Penn essays section, it says to “answer one of the following questions” so then it goes to give options
4a.
4b.
then goes
5a.
5b.
5c.
So, do we need to pick an essay from section and 4 and then another (optional) from section 5? Or could we just pick one of 5 and not do 4?

Are you referring to the Penn common app supplement or penn specific app? Cause on the penn app, it's essays 5a and 5b, and then 6a,b, and c. And it directly states that you have to do one essay from each section. Also the two essay sections are separated on the penn specific app so it's quite obvious that neither is optional. On the common app supplement, however, I believe the 6a-c essays are optional since it's basically another personal statement essay.

By research paper, you mean that it's your job to collect a lot of information about Penn (campus life, programs, activities, etc) to include in the essay?

Well, they want you to explain "Why Penn?" right? Why do you like Penn, as opposed to other institutions? There are seven other Ivies and there are many other colleges in Philly like Temple. Why is this one university so special? You have to delve further into it and prove that this is really the place for you.
