Oh gosh. >: Getting into UCLA, UCSD, Berkeley?

I'm a junior, graduating in 2010. And I have to say, I'm not extraordinary.

I am not a CA resident, though I may be moving there next year.

So far my weighted GPA is 4.14 and my unweighted is 3.8. Both are calculated using my 10th and 11th grade coursework only (end of the year still coming).

I have taken all four core classes each year. Only two or less were regular classes, the rest either Honors or AP.

I am/have taken the following AP classes:
AP European History
AP U.S. History
AP Psychology
AP Studio Art

Next year I plan on taking AP Government, AP Calculus and AP Literature. AP Biology and AP Studio Art is in consideration (since I hate normal art classes).

Unfortunately, my extracurricular are a little weak (I wasn't aware of their importance lol). My list includes roughly one and a half years of taekwondo (ended due to its ridiculous cost), watching kids during an event at my taekwondo place, dog watching during an adoption day at PetCo, and working at the family restaurant every Friday since 2007-2009 (before then, I worked on and off based on whether they needed me or not). There was no art club until this year, and guess what, I'm in it. I do a bunch of digital and drawings on my spare time. I'm hoping the hospital will accept me as a volunteer for the summer. I don't think going to an official gym daily counts. =(

I don't have a lot of awards. I've gotten into some museum display and 2nd and 3rd place in a district art competition. I get my academic lettering each year. This year I am the "winner" in the visual art department. I've participated in an "Engineering Challenge" at UCCS and have entered a regional "save the water from pollution" contest kind of thing. That's about it. :p

I took the ACT and SAT during Spring. My ACT score is 27, while my SAT score is, damn hind sight, 1750. Instead of cramming last minute for both tests, I'm taking proper measures to prepare myself for next year. My goal is for a 30+ ACT score and a SAT score of at least 2000.

I haven't taken the subject tests yet. I'm placing my money on U.S History and Literature.

SO. Finally, my question is: What are my chances of getting into said universities with what I currently have? What would you suggest I do for my senior year to increase my chances? Any advice, etc, would be appreciated.

...and thank you for taking the time to read. :3

Bump. Please respond. :B

Er. I’m ranked 9 out of 494 and am Asian American if that matters, btw.

Your chances look grim as of this time, but you could improve them by studying for the SAT/ACT and improving those scores.

LA and Berkeley are going to be tough with your test scores, but you’ll have a decent chance at SD with improved scores.

thanks you for responding. Should I be aiming higher with my test scores? Also, are there other areas I should work on?

:x Bump please.~

I agreed, you SAT scores are really morbid. You NEED at least 2000+, but even then that may not cut it. I live in california, infact in Santa Barbara, about 3 miles away from a UC (UC Santa barbara) ,and I know UC’s WAY too well. I have seniors friends, who are in state (obviously), who get rejected from UC Berkeley and UCLA with more EC’s than you and SAT scores of like 2150+.
Here is your best way of improving your chances.

EC’s: Do them if you want, but since you are a class of 2010, like me, you have no time to truly get a meaningful EC that helps you get in.

SAT’s: K you need higher scores, that is a fact. If you want to save yourself, get 2200+ and your chacnes will get ebtter.

SATII’s: VERY IMPORTANT IN UC’S, get 740+ in both.

other than that, cross your fingers ;)

GOOD LUK! :)

I agree with the others, you really have no chance at all for those schools
Because people that have better stats than you In state get routinely rejected

Boo. :x Curse my ignorant years.

I’ll get those scores up. I dunno. I still have hope. Maybe I’ll be one of those bottom 50% students who get accepted. <_<;

I always seem to aim too high. What are every ones opinion when it comes to every other UC, then? :x

every other UC is possible. UCSB, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC davis, and UC Irvine all seem within reach. I am sure you can get into at least one if you paly your cards right

I am asian but not american yet, class of 2010 too. interestingly i am intersted in the same colleges as you are. I think Berkeley and UCLA are dangerous because of your SAT score. However I know someone just got in with a 1700. It all depends on everything not just SAT. UCSD is possible. Stanford is my dream school and so my counselor told me they wont even look at your application if any of your SAT subscore is under 600. Because I am a recent immigrant so my English scores ALWAYS kill me. i have a 1970 in SAT with high 500s in CR and writing and a 800 in math.

I see.

I was really unprepared for the SAT. =x I thought it’d be easy so I didn’t do anything. Wish me luck next time lol. (Any suggested preparation, btw?)

Also. Do UCs need both ACT and SAT I? Or do they only take the highest one? o_o I dunno…~

And lalacala, thats amazing. I do terrible in math, no matter what. D=

La bump bump.

i think you should expand you college list to schools in the state that you live in. UCs cater heavily to CA students so unless you have outstanding stats(e.g 4.5 weighted, 2200+SAT), your chances are slim at a top 3 UC. the extra curriculars don’t help your cause either. you should be good from about UC Davis down.

The UCs are accepting more OOS stuidents because of the much higher tuition they pay so things are better than ever for OOS students who can afford them. You will have to have at least their average stats though. Your GPA looks fine if that’s your UC calculated GPA.

Average SATs are about 2050 at UCB and UCLA, 2000 at UCSD, 1850 at SB, I and D. You should be fine for the rest now.

:D Thanks for all the replies. I’ll work my hardest in the next 4 months lol.~

Dont know about Berkeley/LA. Both are prestigious. Maybe if you work hard!

Work on SAT/ACT. Try to get some more extracurriculars.
Work really hard now (during summer). Lots of community service, studying (? for SAT/ACT), get a job or do more hours at your familys restaurant, etc
