oh jeez, chances?!?

(BE BRUTALLY HONEST PLEASE)

so wesleyan is seeming more and more appealing by the day...
maybe we should see what my chances are?

GPA: 3.75 UW, 4.25 W (my school gives a lot of weight to AP's and honors classes so this probably wont be that high on their scale)... speaking of which, i go to a poor public school in a rich seattle, wa suburb... awk? yes.
SAT: 630cr 660m 720w (2010 total)
ACT: 27 first time, just retook it and probably got like a 30
SAT II's... literature 610 (dont know what happened there)... taking spanish w/ listening and math 2 this weekend.

im taking the most rigorous schedule of anyone i know... AP English lit, AP Calculus ab, AP Statistics, AP Spanish lang, ASB Leadership, AP US Gov/Pol... and im independently studying AP spanish literature, ap english lang, and ap comparative government.

(only other AP was AP us history in 11th but basically all my classes have been honors since they make it really hard to take APs at my school)

my recs will be amazing. 3 teachers offered to write them for me without me even asking and my counselor is new so shes basically going to say im the best student ever on earth because she feels bad for effing me over in my senior year.

essay is quite great as well... it is about how i discovered the hair tie and it changed my life... relating back to how i have vitiligo so one of my eyes is white and also how im gay and was harassed for it. lets be honest it evokes both tears and laughter in everyone who reads it.

ECS:
honors society 9-12
give 100 11-12
over 600 hours of comm serv in 9-12
amnesty international
ASB parliamentarian
(biggest one): model united nations... fun director 11, president 12 taking our school to our first international conference ever
plus others but they arent as important (trying for depth not breadth)

probably other stuff im forgetting but its probably not as important

It won't be a slam dunk. You're a male from an underrepresented state; that much is in your corner. Your stats are on the cusp. Does your school rank? Fewer and fewer schools rank these days; so, if your's does -- and you're in the top 10% (which it sounds like) -- be sure and highlight that.

As someone pointed out in a different thread, being gay at Wesleyan is sort of a wash, admissions wise. You would probably want to apply ED just in order to improve the odds a bit. Beyond that, it's a crap shoot.

I'm not gonna lie-- it's going to be very, very tough. Just work on your essay and on trying to have a fantastic interview. Also, expressing some interest towards the school wouldn't hurt.

Hmm...I really don't know what to say.

If you really love what u see and feel about Wesleyan then no matter what your chances you should apply as strange things happen during admissions time. I can not tell from your post if you are economically disadvantaged or are a urm but if you are then that may help along with your geo location. However your SATs and SAT II are too low for Wes and if you can get them up over 700 your chances would increase. If you can afford to visit campus and meet the admissions dean to express your interest that would help. Make sure without fail you arrange for an almni interview and knock it out of the park. Prove to interviewer you'd make a great fit. However you need to become familiar with the vibe of Wes and what makes Weskids tick. Good luck.

Dana's Dad P"11"

thanks for your responses everyone!

im going to try to visit... i have a friend who lives in nyc so i think ill make him escort me to middletown.

im retaking SAT in december, hopefully i will get somewhere around 2100-2200 (when i took it the first time i didnt study at all, maybe ill try that...)

and no im not an urm or economically disadvantaged... middle class white kid. damn. but im buddhist? if that helps? haha probably not

avant, if you wanna meet with a current Wesleyan student to speak with, I'd gladly be willing to. I'd also love to host, as I've hosted two guys the night before they've had interviews.
