Oh Lawdy Lawd

Well I've tried to avoid it, but it looks like I'm about to get a C in my AP Physics class. It's the hardest class offered at school, and I've hired tutors to help me out but to no avail.
U Chicago's my top choice by far. Physics has nothing to do with my intended major, and it's my only C grade ever. How bad does it look for me? Do I have a chance at admissions?

Are you a junior or senior?

I'm a senior now. I got deferred EA earlier this year.

Take the initiative, call your admissions counselor at U of C, and explain it to him/her. Let them know that you're still very interested in the school, and that you put all the effort you could into a very difficult course.

Well, it's not going to help ... but how much it hurts may depend on why you were defered. If you have not already done so, you may want to send any additional materials (awards, letter of rec, and so on) that may help to trump the C.

For what its worth, my eldest, a 4th year at U of C was admitted with a C and my youngest was admitted this year EA with a C on the transcript. Chicago is looking at the whole package. They know how challenging that class is and they respect you for taking it. You're not likely to get in solely because you didn't get a C, nor will you likely be denied solely because you got a C. If you fell it needs explanation, contact your admissions rep.

My S didn't have a C on his transcript, but instead had a D in an AP class! He was admitted.

I think that out of the cohort of highly selective colleges, Chicago is probably the least number or statistics driven. I echo the sentiments of the people above, and I think that they will first look at your entire pacakge before they even begin to consider how that C reflects on your overall academic achievement. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I had an E in an honors class and a number of C's and a D.

I was deferred. Mine is a sort of special case, but grades are not everything.

E?

is that a very, very low D that is still somehow useful?

Exempt?
Finger slipped F?

Tennisdude- are you looking at Umich too?

Thanks for your replies everyone. I think ill go ahead and send a letter and a supplement along with my midyear report.
