Oh look another chance thread (UCSB and specifically CCS Physics)

Hey CC! :)>- I'm an Out of State senior who has applied to UCSB for Physics and is planning to apply to CCS Physics.

Anything else I should mention? I'm a bit concerned my UC GPA is too low for UCSB and being OoS isn't too great. For CCS I'm wondering how selective it is? Does anyone know their acceptance rate or other information?

So does anyone know how selective CCS Physics is?

I think you’ll get in.
Good luck.

Selectivity of CCS, from everything that I can gather, has more to do with your statement of intent and how it is read by the departmental committee. In general, I think they want people who want to be there.

Perhaps call or email Sara and ask her how many applicants there are this cycle for Physics? Your stats look good. If you seem like you are responsible and independent from your recommendations, and your statement of intent hangs together, I think you have a good chance. I think the applicants are judged on research promise rather than demonstrated results, at this stage.

To me the fact that you are teaching/TA-ing in the CS class, and especially that you are taking three (3!) demanding independent study classes bodes very well for you. That and the 35 Math/[5/5] Calc B/C APs could swing the pendulum (as if you needed to swing the pendulum). You seem like an ideal candidate. All my opinion, of course- that with $1.75 will get you a tall coffee at Starbucks!

How will you survive without the Lake-Effect Blanket each winter?

Let us know how it goes! CCS looks like a very exciting concept that has been well implemented. I am very excited for you- and especially so that you ferreted out this gem from out-of-state. It usually flies below the RADAR. If you are going to pay OOS prices for a UC, you may as well get a Stanford-class education (like CCS). You seem to know how to do it right!

I’m really glad I found out about CCS too. It really does seem like the perfect choice for me. I’m still not so confident I can even get into UCSB but you seem to be way more sure. Do you think my UC GPA won’t be such a big deal?

I guess I’ve just really been not feeling confident since I just got rejected from cornell early decision and deferred from umich ann arbor early action. So I’ve been really unsure about all this.

Thanks for replying!
