OH NO!! Im really panicking now.

Ok this is what happend. In november I was sick and missed an exam for my poli sci class. I talked to him and he said that all make up tests were being given during the final. So i showed up and took the final and then the make up test for the exam I missed. So last week he says that the grades are up for the exams, I look and I have nothing for the make-up. Having a zero in this exam gives me an F in the class. I know I took that exam and turned it in. I also e-mailed him but got no response. I really dont know what to do, im really panicking. Should I call the school? I dont know what to do.

When the semester begins, go see him or call him. More than likely he and the rest of the department are out of town and off line now. It is not difficult for professors to change grades. Your prof can do that after college is back in session.

its their fault for misplacing your exam

Do you have his phone number?

Yeah, I left him a voice message two days ago but he hasnt called back. What happens if they loose my exam? Am I hopeless since its basically my word and against his that I actually took the exam.

I e-mailed the people in my class and they said that they all got all of their scores in. What can I do if he lost my exam? Do I just get a zero? Is there a way I can explain this to the schools im trying to transfer to?

I'd say that if you get in contact with the guy, explain the situation, he will most likely take one of your previous test scores and just sub it in. If the guy's nice, he will sub in the highest test score you've received. If he is understanding, he will just sub in your lowest score (or an average), or, worst case scenario, if he is completely lacking in the understanding department, you have to take the F.

Thanks for the help. He just sent me an email today telling me not to worry and that he will look into it as soon as he gets back to the school. He's not a bad person he seemed very understanding when I told him that I was really sick so I couldnt take the exam the first time. He also wrote my name down for the list of people taking the make ups so that might help me.

Ok this has gone too far. He told me that he would check on my test but he hasnt talked to me about it and it still says F as my grade on my transcript. Also I just got a letter from my school that i've been placed on academic warning because of the F and need to lower my schedule from 17 credits to 14 by friday. I cant have 14 credits since i had 15 last semester and with 14 that would only give me 29 and I need 30 to transfer.

sounds like theyre screwing with you

This isn't looking too good for you. Try meeting with the professor in person if you haven't already.

Virginia, nobody is paying attention to your situation, and you are getting lost in the shuffle. You have to turn into a wolverina and straighten this mess out yourself!

STEP ONE: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING
You need to have specifics ready and on hand so that when you talk to people, you can provide correct information. Sit down and document everything, starting with the date that you missed the exam due to illness, the date that you took the final and the make-up exams, and all of the dates that you can remember when you contacted the professor, and make a note if it was by email, by phone, or in person. "Week of" is good enough if you can't remember the precise dates.

STEP TWO: CONTACT THE RIGHT PEOPLE
Once you have all of your documentation in front of you, start making phone calls. Document WHO you spoke with, the gist of what was said, and the date and time of the phone call. Keep it friendly and get to the point right away. Be clear about what you want from your phone call, e.g...

"Professor Dumbledorf, this is Virginia Lastname at (your return phone #), and it is (time of day) on Tuesday, Jan. 11. I am following up on an email I received from you on Jan. 1st regarding the grade for my make-up exam from last quarter. I was notified last week by the college that I have been placed on academic probation due to the "F" I received in your class. I cannot register for the full number of credits that I will need to transfer to (name of the university) unless I receive credit for the make-up exam I took in your class, and the "F" is changed to the correct grade. It needs to be resolved this week, before Friday, January 14, so that I can register for the classes that I need to take.

I am calling to find out what has been done since I heard from you on January 1st so that I will have the correct information when I speak to the probations department this afternoon. My email address is (your email addie), or I can be reached at my cell # (your cell #). If you are unable to get back to me today, I will drop by your office tomorrow during your regular office hours with an update. Thanks again for your help."

Then...contact the academic probations department and tell them that you received an academic warning last week, and that you are in the process of trying to work things out with a professor. You want to let them know that you never received credit for the make-up exam; that you have been working on the problem since before the break; that you spoke &/or left a message with the professor today; and, that you are waiting for his response.

Tell the probation person that you would like to register for 17 credits, but you can't because you are waiting for the professor to post the correct grade. Ask for a suggestion on what you should do next. Perhaps, he/she could follow up with the professor, but I doubt it! Ask for his/her name, note the time you spoke with the person, and write it down on your log.

STEP THREE: FOLLOW-UP
Find out what exactly what needs to be done, who should do what, and then, follow up with your prof. At least, let him know that you DID speak to someone at the probations department and that you were advised to proceed a certain way. Be persistent and respectful. Thank him again for his help, even if he hasn't produced any results, yet. Basically, you want him to do whatever is necessary to make the change in your grade, and it has to happen this week. Let him know that you will contact him again tomorrow to follow up.

Here's the thing, Virginia. You need to have this cleared up ASAP. Professors are busy people, and either he's procrastinating, or he's run into a bunch of red tape, and it's just taking him some time to enter all of the make-up grades. If he doesn't respond, at least you'll have a head start with someone in the probations department on registering for 17 credits. It's important to document WHO, WHAT WAS SAID, and WHEN, in case you have to rely on this information later. It won't get resolved unless you make it happen. It's a pain, but you have to be a sqeaky wheel on this one...or, a wolverina!

:::squeaky wheel:::squeaky wheel::::so, did you hear from your prof? ~sluggy

I think after your last post she just went ahead with a death threat. Probably sitting in a county lockup now. Thanks sluggbugg.

Just kidding again! Let us know.

"I think after your last post she just went ahead with a death threat. Probably sitting in a county lockup now. Thanks sluggbugg."

Anytime, Em. :) I like to call it "gentle harassment." I think it's just taking a little time for the grade change to show up on her transcript.
