<p>Don’t you love how no one knows what Penn is? Many people think it’s just another state school around where I live.</p>
<p>Well, in the Penn bookstore, they have a shirt that has the two-toned P and then on top it says "Not Penn State" =]</p>
<p>I hear ya, though. Everytime I say I'm going to UPenn, people think I mean Penn state. Oh well, if people don't know the difference, then I just laugh at them (on the inside) for being ignorant morons. I live 20 mins from Penn - people SHOULD know the difference around here.</p>

<p>Yeah, I have heard that "Penn State?" so many times already too... haha~</p>
<p>In a way, I think it might be good for me for first impressions because they won't immediately judge me based on stereotypes (such as if I say Harvard or Yale, the most well known in the Ivy League) yet my future employers will know exactly what UPenn is...</p>

<p>The only people who need to know it's a great school are you and your future employer. Other than that, it's all ego...I personally like the fact that it is one of the lesser-known prestigious schools out there. </p>
<p>And for those of you worried you're not going to get the cred you "oh-so-deserve," you will soon be in the heart of a city that knows the difference between Penn and Penn State.</p>

<p>that's right when i told my teachers "i got into Upenn" they congrat me and then replied "Penn state is wonderful"<br>
all the happiness deflated a bit when i heard that lol
but when i said "i'm deciding between duke , brown, stanford and upenn" they said "definitely don' t go to "Penn State, it's wonderful but it's just a state college." ~~sighs sighs~~</p>

<p>It's the same situation if you told the "common folk" you were going to Swarthmore, Williams, or Amherst. Do you think they would recognize those names for LAC? Of course not. Does that make those schools any less prestigious? No. So, who cares what "Billy" down at Walmart thinks?
If you haven't learned this by now either, even some of the teachers in high schools are idiots. Just because they teach high school classes doesn't mean they know which schools are Ivies or not. There are still "unspohisticated" teachers AND academic advisors/counselors at the high school level. That's why it is so important to do your own research. DO NOT go by what counselors/teachers at the high school level tell you. Some are just as lazy and incompetent as anyone else in society.</p>
<p>Excuse me, but my first thoughs upon waking up in the morning are "I wonder how I can impress Billy down at Walmart today."</p>
<p>Oh wow I remember this problem so well. I come from Colorado, and I would say that only 1/15 people I talked to knew how good Penn was. </p>
<p>My advice is this: don't be a jerk about it. Don't get huffy. Relish the moments when you meet people who DO know Penn, but don't try to pull the whole "ivy league" card. It's so pretentious. People will figure it out. </p>
<p>I remember when I was admited ED at Wharton. I told everyone who wrote me a recommendation that I was admitted and slowly let my friends know I'd been accepted. At first people wondered why I hadn't applied to a better school. They had no idea. It was only when some pretentious asian girl in my class started talking to people about how she and I were the only people at my school who'd been accepted to Ivy's that people really figured it out. But then things really started to get good for me. People actually came up and told me how thrilled they were for me and how happy they were that I hadn't been a dick about it by shoving it in their faces. People actually admired me and asked me for advice while my grumpy asian friend got to sit and watch as people ignored her. The recognition was genuine instead of jealous. Trust me, it's far more worthwhile to be relaxed about it. Recognition will come, I promise. Just be patient.</p>
<p>I love it. Received the "Penn State" treatment from a soccer coach back when I was deciding whether or not to attend Penn. I might buy one (even though I chose Cornell).</p>
<p>Good story, Wharton. I will tell you from my own life's experiences that people who are "in-the-know" will find you more sophisticated that you went to Penn, because they will know you chose a school on quality rather than some popular "brand-name" that everyone has heard of.</p>
