Oh...um, where is that again?

Haha, I'm sure you've all gotten this question when you told people where you were accepted/will be attending. So just out of curiosity, how do YOU reply when you say, "Pomona," and they ask, "Oh...um, where is that again?"

southern cali...right next to Montclair ;)

Oh the response my son gets here in TX is "what, you didn't get into UT?" If he told them Califorinia, I don't know that they know where that is either! LOL

I say, "35 miles east of LA" if they ask WHERE it is. If they say, "Po-no-ma? Never heard of it," I will sometimes say something about how a lot of people haven't heard of it, but it's incredibly well regarded in academic circles.

Fact is, if you're gonna be a sagehen, this is going to happen to you a LOT, possibly for the rest of your life. Try not to be too bothered by it.

Irene, '03

yeah, i've been getting that since like junior year when people would ask me where i wanted to go. it's annoying, especially since there's a state school called cal poly pomona and if i say pomona college, everyone assumes that it's cal poly. i have to add "it's a private school in claremont."

but i think the point is... people who matter (future employers, grad schools) know.

although... sometimes if someone's really making me mad i add "it was voted happiest students in the country and 13th hardest school to go into." =] but not usually. haha

I like to use the word consortium because it sounds so academic. :)

i say "its 30min east of LA" im not even sure if its 30mins. probably more like an hour. but whatever. the other day i saw someone with a "POMONA" sweatshirt on at school and they were an underclassman that wasnt my sister, i think it was the high light of my day. it was sooooo cool to see that.

btw, does anybody know if we can get Pomona class of 2009 shirts anywhere? will they be selling them at the admitted students weekend or at the coop? its not online yet.

aw we have to pay for them? what happened to the free shirts we were supposedly getting =)

I do exactly what Rosa does. Emphasis on "private" college near LA. No one knows where Claremont is...

Pomona has to be the best kept secret in the Boston area (except among high schoolers)!

Hang in there, you will get a sagehen shirt but will still want a regular Pomona t shirt, or sweatshirt-good graduation presents to hint for. More folks from back east now have heard of Pomona and as ballergirl says those that count know!

when people give me a confused look after i say i'm going to pomona college, i just pat them on the head and say that it's a community college.

but most people in the know recognize the name. the way i see it, i picked pomona for its educational opportunity, not its name value.

haha, yes, I was so excited today when this girl who just came from China, like, a year ago was asking me about colleges, and when I said I was accepted to Pomona, she was like, "Wow! That's such a good school!" Me: "Wait, you've heard of it?!" Her: "Yeah, my dad said that it's like a small Harvard." Haha, I took it as a compliment.

haha yeah dude
I love when people know it. Today i told my gov teacher i got in and she was liek "oh wow! you got into pomona? pomoan college right? not cal poly? oh wow we haven't sent someone there in years"
that made me happy. and my school's college advisor who is a pomona alumni jumped out of her seat and called me a sagehen and shook my hand. haha it was funny.

but yeah i HATE when people don't know how good it is. i usualy say something about it being harder to get into than berkeley and being private just so people know. luckly, most people that matter do know so that's good..

anyways... i want a free shirt!

so can i get a free shirt in a small? or am i going to get the standard large/x-large? i hate those.

well, i wanted to point out that the admissions decisions thread stopped at post #.....47!!!! crazy. just noticed, and wanted to point it out in true pomona tradition. :D have a nice day.

About being like a small Harvard--there is a Pomona shirt that reads "Harvard, the Pomona College of the East." About the one you'll receive, I understand that it has Cecil Sagehen on it--the same design as the admissions folder.

do we get the shirts when we send in the deposit? and about the Harvard/Pomona shirt. i wear it occasionally. once i was interviewed for the school broadcast for art class or something and when they showed me talking all you could see was the "HARVARD the pomona college" so everyone thought i wanted to go to harvard...well, everyone that cared, that is.

Once you send in the deposits you get the shirt and your window decal. If you send it in last minute you may end up with those extra large ones! We did ours mid April and my S got his med.

D already received an e-mail asking for her shirt size. The deposit was sent in December (ED1).

aw, I am ed1 and I didn't get an email, my deposit was sent in Dec.. what a long wait.
