Exactly as the title says. Anybody know of the best way to get from O'Hare to UChicago? Taxi is too expensive, from what I've heard, and my parents aren't too keen on me hopping all over the CTA and having to walk a couple blocks due to safety concerns. While I could just not listen to them on that point, I would prefer to - well, I'd prefer to avoid the entire "lying to my parents" bit if I can help it.

(Also, I got to O'Hare from UChicago using the Green Line, which I've heard is a bit sketchy if you're traveling by yourself, so I'm not quite sure how to get back. Take the Blue Line and then hop to the Red Line, get off, take the bus, and then walk? Oi, this public transit stuff is messy.)

Or is there a shuttle service I can use (ideal), and if there is, do I need to book a spot? Or do I just . . . show up and pay?

Thanks! (And I'll certainly be booking flights at Midway next time. Jesus, what a mess.)

Omega Shuttle is a good option. $35 for a one-way ticket, and they will drop you off at your door in Hyde Park. You can look them up on the web.

I think the fastest way using the CTA is to take the blue line to Jackson, walk the block or two to State (I think this can be done underground), and catch the #6 to Hyde Park. You’re not transferring in any really sketchy areas that way, and you don’t have to mess with the red line + 55 bus.

However, I’d recommend the Omega Shuttle if you’re willing to spend the extra money. While the CTA ride wouldn’t really be too bad, it will take considerably longer than the shuttle will.

What if I’m an incoming student, let’s say in the fall, and I have about two suitcases with me and a bunch of other crap. Does the downtown bus or the shuttle help in any way for these issues…

Unless there’s a downtown bus that I don’t know about, it only runs on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 pm to 3 am or something like that. It leaves every 30 minutes from the Reynolds Club with no stops other than at the Roosevelt green/red/orange line station. This probably won’t help you much in getting to the university from airports. Your best bets are going to be the Omega Shuttle or a taxi, or your parents could rent a car. If it hasn’t been made clear in this thread already, you should go for flights into Midway instead of O’Hare, as it’s much cheaper to get yourself from Midway to UChicago.

The trip planners will tell you to take the Green or Redlines and then a bus.
Because you will be with luggage and new to the transit system, I wouldn’t have you wait for a bus near the Garfield and 55th street area. You cannot find cabs there either.

The Ohare track of the blueline is very safe, and the area around Jackson is a business area, is full of cabs and very populated. I find my city’s cab drivers to be very friendly, especially to women. If you have never been to your dorm, this might be a safer and simpler to take a cab.

OPTION 1
Take the Blueline train to Jackson ($2.25), then catch a cab to Hyde Park ($18).
COST $20

OPTION 2
You could also take the Blueline to Jackson, and then get on the #2 or #6 buses.
However, it only runs at certain times. Check transitchicago.com for detail and stop locations.
It’s a great ride the runs on Lake Store Drive over looking Lake Michigan and the Bear’s stadium.
COST: $2.50

OPTION 3
Take Cab from O’hare to Hyde Park
COST:$60 (could be more, depends on traffic)

I’d pick option 1. it’s fastest.
option 2 and 1 are equally safe.
3 is easiest and safest.

We like Midway to the 55 bus. Neither of my kids has ever had a problem. (I’ve flown in and taken the 55 as well.) S1 reports that when coming back from breaks, there are usually enough Chicago kids on the incoming flights (or waiting for the 55) that splitting a cab fare among four people is only a couple of dollars more than the bus fare.

My daughter is a student at UChicago. She has taken Omega shuttle for around $30 from O’Hare. That is more convenient. If you can fly into Midway, taxis are not that spendy ($20 ride, and usually you find other UChicago bound folks for sharing the ride).
