Ohh noo!!!Top schools...

I just found this.....
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1343281,00.html

hmm.... this could be heavily influenced by the school's international fame.

UCB for example... is very well known beyond our waters.

I'm surprised Qinghua U in China is not listed...

Then again... what's the method involved in constructing this ranking? What do the publishers value?

I have no idea what they used to build this ranking!!!
Another interesting link

well... you know, when it goes to selectivity like that, it's just ridiculous at how the adcoms split hairs.

Harvard rejects might end up at Princeton and vice versa

The rankings seem to substantially favor schools in the UK. Also, they list UC San Francisco as #20 even though it is only a med school, so I don't see how they can rate it against (much less rank it higher) than other schools with undergraduate divisions. These rankings are ridiculous.

Well, xiares, there isn't exactly a single ranking that makes sense :p

They refer to UMich as Michigan University...good stuff.

that ranking is a piece of ****...they give harvard a perfect 1000 points...sorry but harvard may be an awesome school but no school is "perfect." i hate rankings that put harvard at number 1--it's like they have no other choice. clearly shows they put no thinking into it.
university of tokyo is below uc-berkeley? give me a break!!!

The Times Higher Supplement actually releases rankings every year. The latest rankings they have put are:

Settle down. If you think for just a second, you might see that it is possible that they ranked harvard first, then scaled the numbers so that it got 1000. 1000 as a number really isn't anything special

haha Pennsylvania University?? What a load of crap

So maybe they don't list all the names perfectly, cut them some slack.

-This is only to keep with the ranking validity theory; have Harvard somewhere near the number 1 spot, and you can claim pretty much what ever nonsense you wish after it.

Right since we've all seen what happened to Washington Monthly...

Yeah that's where I got the info from but I was too lazy to put down all 200 rankings and the seperate rankings. As you can easily see Peer Review score is immensly important for them (it accounts to 40% of the total grade) and other criteria I find ridiculous like the international faculty and students scores which account for why many US universities are ranked relatively low compared to european ones. Also their peer review is probably more european centered (it is a british newspaper after all) so I advise you to take these rankings (and all others) with a grain of salt. Still I think some universities are more correctly ranked here (Duke #11) and others not (Princeton #9). Still it is an interesting ranking system and their rankings seem to be more or less consistent with USNews (roughly)

the rankings are meant for international reputation only, its not meant to measure academic prowess. this is why peer review and some other factors like international student or faculty becomes so important and this is also why u of san francisco is ranked with MIT and harvard. i believe u of san francisco is a rather well known med school interntionally so thats why they are so high up in the rankings. i would say the ranking is only good till number 20 since the top 20 schools on this list are probably the most well known/academically capable in the world. well there are some exceptions like beijing university which is not very good by international standards but we have to realize it is the best school in china and if its top school for 1.3 billion people then i guess you got to cut it some slack cause it is a bit influential. after the top 20 it gets a bit shady cause some employers/academians would respect edinburgh while others respect brown or others would respect um....who knows what. but generally speaking, the top 20 are the most well known and respected in the world.
