I am an instate student that will be attending Ohio State in the Spring as a transfer. I just looked at my outstanding charges sheet that I got today and it said that I was an out of state student and it tacked on 7k in fees. The deadline for the instate application was due on the 15th of December, and I didn't know that they would tack on 7k in fees nor did I know I had to fill one out.

I need help is it possible to convince them to remove the fees? Please help!! 7,000 is a lot of money.

If your parents live in Ohio, how long have you all lived there?

If the school is in error, then you’ll be able to get the fees removed. if you really don’t qualify for instate because you’re under 24 and your parents live elsewhere or you just moved to Ohio, then that’s a different story.

You may have to ask for a delay of enrollment to the Fall so you’ll have time to straighten this out or get residency established.

Apparently everyone has to fill out a affidavit of residency to prove that you are a resident of Ohio.

I am 20 years old.

I went to HS in Ohio.

My parents live in Ohio.

I have lived in Ohio since 1995 and for the past 6 years.

I just didn’t know that I had to fill out the affidavit, until I got the statement of charges. I thought that was understood that I was an instate resident when I specified it on my application.

Call the number on your bill (I am sure there is one) and explain what you just explained to us. Ask them if you can fill out the form now and get the charges changed. You can try them on Monday, but they might not be at work then…Wednesday will be a better bet.

If you have the affidavit form and can fill that out and get it in the mail or fax or whatever to them, go ahead and do that while you wait to talk to someone. Then you would be able to say you did it as soon as you found out.

That is what I am doing on Monday morning and then again on Wednesday. The form is online and it just blocks me out. But I also just emailed the Bursar explaining what happened. This is the message I get when I try to do my residency,

"
Either the Residency Reclassification Form is not currently open to accept applications for the term you selected, or you are not recognized as an active student in our system. Please contact the admissions office if you are a new applicant and this will be your first term of enrollment, or contact your academic advisor if you have been previously taken classes at The Ohio State University."

Like I said, I emailed the bursar and my advisor telling them what happened and hopefully I will get it taken care of.

If they deny it for some reason I would take the semester off and reapply for the fall rather than pay that much extra for a mistake. You could earn that in the interim in assorted low end jobs and self study some topics on your own.

That is also a good idea. But unfortunately the form is totally online based and I can’t do anything. I already sent the bursar an email. I will try calling today.

I have a friend who attends the University of Cincinnati. He missed the deadline for submitting the affadavit by one day last year and was told he was out of luck. It was a $7k mistake - ouch!

He was a returning student, so you might have more latitude as a new matriculant. However, be aware that you will need to file the affadavit every semester.

OH wow! I think I have a lump in my throat now. I am really scared. I don’t want to pay that $7k extra fee. These holidays have become really bad for me.
