OHIO Road Trip with Junior daughter - comments or ON the Route add-on's welcomed

Probably the only major disadvantage of Ohio, especially northern/central Ohio, is the weather. The winters are truly awful. I guess you get used to them but they are not for the light hearted.

^^^ @exlibris97, I transferred to an Ohio school from the South in January many years ago. It was in
Southern Ohio (Miami U) but, to me it was THE NORTH and exactly what I wanted. As it happened, it was a particularly brutal, snowy winter, but fit my idea of " going away to college." I was so delighted to be slogging through feet of fresh snow from class to class. So exotic! Just like in the movies!!!

I actually love northeast Ohio winters. The more snow the better. Last winter had little snow. Supposed to get more snow this winter. We shall see.

Central Ohio tends to get the cold but not the snow. Sometimes though there can be snow.

Sort of off topic, but there are so many great schools in Ohio. The only downside I’m coming across is the airfares are so expensive from all of the cities. Living in NY, I see that it’s cheaper to fly to Chicago or Indianopolis, even Orlando which are all further away.

Spirt usually runs some cheap flights into Cleveland and Akron.

Cleveland no longer has a hub. Not as many direct flights. And less competition. Makes it more expensive in many cases.

I did, too when I attended Oberlin. And I love snow.

Funny part about the weather was it was actually snowing hard when I was ARRIVING BACK FROM SPRING BREAK one year. Probably one of the few students who was actually overjoyed at the sight.

Very late reply as we are planning College Road Trip #2 but wanted to pop in and report that we LEFT Baldwin Wallace after being jerked around for over an hour and then being told me missed our tour! They stuck us in a room with a admissions trainee who knew much less than we did and asked the most lame questions. Once we determined that they were a hot mess in the office and then were told by a random student “almost everyone leaves campus during the weekends and it is not safe to walk around at night”. We called it a loss and left. The school was plopped right in the middle of a suburb and neighborhood but not in a good way. BUT we loved College of Wooster so that is on the short short list still.

@DoDEAMom18 - I live in Cleveland… and BW does not have a great reputation in town. And if I recall correctly, on last year’s Forbe’s lists (Yes, I know all lists are flawed) it was NOT well ranked (in the bottom 25%). Perhaps you dodged a bullet

Maybe I missed your post, but what did you think of Denison, Kenyon, OH Wesleyan and Allegheny? Also what did you like about Wooster? Much thanks!

@DoDEAMon18 I also live in the Cleveland area. I grew up in the area and went to the High School right next to BW. I LOL when I read the student told you it’s not safe to walk around at night. Give me a break… it in a suburb not the City of Cleveland.

I am from the Cleveland area as well. And I would not say Berea/BW campus is something I would say is unsafe. I don’t know enough about the school though to comment on whether kids go home on weekends.

Yes! @DoDEAMom18 I remember your thread well and would love to hear more about your road trip and what you thought about the various school (especially curious about Denison and Wooster.) Thanks for checking back in!

@harvestmoon I agree on 75 – daughter and I made some mistakes because of the construction trying to get down to her college from Detroit and Toledo

Agree that if you are in Cleveland you should look at Case Western. Remember it was a merger between the Case Institute of Technology and the Western Reserve University. My daughter was a Political Science/Philosophy double major and added on an integrated Masters in Bioethics. She loved her four years at Case and graduated right into a great job.

@inthegarden The Ohio trip was a great success with excellent visits, interviews, and meaningful conversations with admissions officers. Plus October in Ohio is as lovely as all the brochures make it out to be. COLLEGE OF WOOSTER had the very best tour guide who was full of great info, lovely campus, interesting programs. DENISON will forever be a favorite as they offered DD1 an enticing merit package that she passed on but they welcomed DD2 with warmth and treated her as if her sister did attend. They did pitch us for DD1 to transfer and offered up some nice financials to go along with it but DD1 is good where she is. But it was nice to feel the love. Allegheny is a great college town and is very high on DD1 list still. OHIO WESLEYAN and WITTENBERG were both nice but not the right fit for DD2 who needs a bit more action going on…but M&D don’t want too much distractions - but we agreed they were not what she is looking for. BALDWIN WALLACE was a bust, they messed up the timing, stuck us for over 45 mins with a trainee admissions counselor who knew much less than we did about the school and the process. Somehow it had slipped our radar that a whopping 89% are instate students. Coming from a very international school that was just too many suitcase classmates. The surrounding area had no vibe to it and the bookstore clerk was wildy rude. DD2 suggested we leave before we even toured which was fine with me. We added in a side trip to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a secretly planned meet up with a bestie from HS and enjoyed the heck out of downtown Cleveland. We met up with a delightful college student working her magic at Sephora who goes to CAPITAL She could not say enough good things about the school, they are CTCL, so that is on DD2 radar from a far but we won’t be visiting but will be applying.

I don’t think Capital is CTCL. My S’12 went there (music conservatory). Glad you enjoyed Denison and Wooster, I love both of those schools!

You are so right…sorry I was thinking College of Wooster is CTCL…
