Ohio State Deferral 2022

I guess I’m really writing this to find out what other people’s experiences are with OSU admissions this year. I applied for Early Action in November for the First-Year Engineering program.
I have a 28 on the ACT (29 on math 32 on science)
4.0 GPA at the time, 3.99 now because of an A- in a college course
I’ve been in 12 ECs with 4 leadership positions and two jobs and I’ve competed at the state level for 7 different competitions
I’m from an impoverished area in a small, rural, Appalachian school so I did every Honors and AP course offered (6 and 1 respectively) and 5 CC+ courses
I’m valedictorian of my class
And yet I was deferred. I don’t understand, I literally don’t know what else I could’ve done except transfer to a richer school with more AP classes. I heard that a lot of kids with 32+ ACT scores from a nearby school were also deferred this year, and when I called to ask why, I got this 15 minute speech about how OSU was trying to get better admission stats and “enter the world’s stage of premier education” which sounded like a pretentious way to say “Ivy League” to me. Has anyone else encountered this? What are admitted students’ stats like? Did I even stand a chance? Regular Decision admission decisions are supposed to come out by the end of March, but I’m still in limbo, and at this point, pissed off at the entire process.

-signed,
A raging future Ohio University student, because at least they wanted me

PS
Sorry that I sound so bitter, I’ve been dragged along for months through unknowns and I thought that I’d be attending OSU for the last 6 years. And also, that GPA is unweighted.

Your stats seem really good with solid ACT and great GPA in rigorous classes. Plus strong ECs. You asked about what stats get in - My daughter got in to OSU’s first year engineering with a 31 ACT and 4.4 GPA. Strong ECs. Surprised to hear they are turning away kids with 32+ACT scores. I hope you hear good news soon! I know process is rough. Daughter was just turned down at a couple schools recently.

There is really nothing to say, except that OSU looks at about 10 different criteria. You sound like a great candidate. There could be hope. Just remember, no matter where you end up, you’re going to do great!

I agree that you do sound like a good candidate, with possibly the exception of your composite ACT. It may be within the middle range overall, but it might be a little low for engineering. Especially if you are a guy. That could be the main reason you were deferred. Also, did you send any letters of recommendation and/or guidance counselor report, and have you seen them?

If you love OSU, send a LOCI to the admissions office and tell them that and that you will attend if you are admitted. Please don’t be too upset, many many students all over the country are still waiting on decisions that will be coming out in the next two weeks (check out the deferred student threads for UM). It’s hard to wait that long for sure, especially when so many friends around are already set. Most of my son’s friends already know, and my son is still waiting on five more schools.

@XanaxBreath
Don’t give up hope yet!
You sound like a great candidate and OSU had even more applications this year.
It has been a long excruciating process.
I feel your pain

Wow. Long exhale. Been waiting 5 months for this!

Go Bucks!

@XanaxBreath I feel your pain to a lesser degree though… expected to get in no problem, been a die hard buckeye fan all my life (mom went there) but I was also deferred. My stats weren’t quite as impressive as yours but I still think I set myself up for what should’ve been a pretty easy acceptance to OSU.

@Sorisky very interesting. I applied at the end of October, was deferred December 15, and still have not heard anything. They have a very odd way of handling the admissions process. Super frustrating.
