Hello these are all out of state schools that I'm deciding which would be best for my future.

If anyone could elaborate on Florida State and IU, it would be much appreciated. I have visited the Columbus campus and it seemed fairly nice in the centeral part and with the recreational things setup such as volleyball nets and basketball courts.

My planned Major is Biology and a Minor in a Foreign language, most likely French.

How are club sports at these schools and are they easy to get into? I know OSU has a wider variety of things from "Club Hockey" to "Club Baseball", which I am fairly interested in.

I don't know much about Flordia or Indiana though.

~Thank you all for your input.

Tallahassee is a VERY nice city and it really doesn't feel like the rest of Florida. Also, the campus seemed smaller than it's 30,000 student body. Academically, it might be slightly below IU and OSU though I'd take Tallahassee over Bloomington and Columbus. A strong point for FSU is it's undergrad school of Criminology though I don't know how reputable its sciences are.

FSU has a vey strong reputation in the sciences, including biology. The foreign language department is also very strong and reputable. Obviously IU and OSU are great schools, but I couldn't tell you too much info on them.
If you can, visit all three schools. That is the only way to truly know which one is for you.
Oh, and FSU has about 40,000 students.

Thank you for your replies guys/girls. I have visited colleges in my own state and the programs are just not as adopted I felt so that's why I am applying out of state. OSU and IU are the closest to home, but they're not exactly close. I come from a small country bumpkin town, so the big city will be a change.

As promptly stated before what took me into OSU vs my own state colleges was the general atmosphere and variety of on campus sports and facilities offered.

OSU seems to have the program focused easier to get me into my goal of Medical School and Florida seems like a decent second choice. Since visting it as of now isn't quite possible. How is the atmosphere at FSU and IU? Or based on your guys overall exprience!

Thanks again!

I think IU is the easy choice here. It has the best overall reputation and the nicest campus/ college atmosphere.

Any personal opinions with a "why" reason though, not just because.

:-P

I know you guys support your schools, but a response with why would be really helpful!

Thanks again.

I agreee that IU has the strongest overall reputation. IU is a great school with an awesome business school. I somewhat disagree about IU having the nicest campus and college atmosphere. IU does have a very nice campus, but the same can be said about FSU and OSU. A major factor to consider is spending your winters in Indiana or Ohio as opposed to Florida. I visited IU about 4 years ago during the winter, and people dind't seem to be out and about like I expected them to be. The previous time that I visited IU was during the fall. The cold winter seemed to really affect the mood of the town. The main difference between Tallahassee and Bloomington is the energy of the towns. Tallahassee just seems like a more vibrant and exciting college town compared to the other two. This is just my personal opinion, and I'm obviously somewhat biased. You really can't go wrong with any of your three choices.

FSU MBA have you been to OSU?

Sure the new area around the Eddie George Grille and Long's bookstore is nice, and the academic campus itself is okay (although alot of sixties buildings that haven't held up well). But most of the student/ apartment housing is pretty bleak. The area surrounding OSU is far from well kept, on Chittenden avenue you have boarded up houses next to student houses. Its might be one of the darkest and dirtiest campuses I've ever seen.

I'm use to -12-15+*F weather it's normal around here. Florida does seem tempting for the weather and it's my second school of choice first being OSU. My best way to meet people coming from out of state would be sports since I've played Hockey and Baseball through out my High-School career. I'm more involved in hockey than baseball however. I'm not too sure how Florida reps in the hockey department and I checked and it said club hockey, but I'm not sure if it would be as popular as it is here in the North. I do agree that OSU does look run-down; however they are re-modeling most of the buildings. The centeral area is the nicest, but some of the dorms do border the "ghetto" or impoverished areas. I'm guessing FSU is more of a Middle-Class suburban area compared to Columbus.

I have spent alot of time in Columbus and at OSU (I've hung out there probably 20 times). It will be years before OSU can fix the surrounding area. Most students only live in dorms the first year (or second year) and a great majority of upperclassman housing is in parts of Columbusthat are far from nice. 90% of your time there will be in the run-down areas, its hard to avoid. I just don't see how anyone could choose OSU over Indiana. Indiana has a much better reputation and a much nicer campus life. Seems like an easy choice. I really don't know much about FSU. Club sports are at every big school, you shouldn't even think about this as a factor in the decision making process.

@ Slipper

I really admire OSUs Medical Program compared to the one in my state and I would hate to transfer after friendships and contacts have been made. That's my main reason.

I haven't noticed IU having an actually Medical Program offered to its current students after the MCAT so that would mean the possibility transfering. If I was to major in business or some other field sure, but it isn't my end goal the way the the United States is economically changing. It seems I would be best in a service profession which is highly admired such as the Medical field the the job oppertunites would be readily availible. If you do know IU does have a Medical Campus that readily accepts its own, please do enlighten or tell me about it. I would be much obliged!

Revision I just looked it up and they do have a Medical Campus within the school. The Hoosiers seems to be good possibility now!

This is very tough to decide ones future!

:-(

Bloomington ranks as one of the top 10 College Sports Towns. It's campus is known to be beautiful, and is mentioned in the Campus as a work of art. It consistently ranks in the top 10 as a party school, host of Little 500 which is known for being the world's best college weekend. There's Indiana Basketball which is essentially god here, and a football team that has made major strides the past 2 years.

As for academics, Indiana's peer assessment score ranks in the top 40 among national universities. It's business school is in the top 10 in the country, it's music school is in the top 2-3 in the country, it's Journalism school is in the top 10, it's Psychology, Geology, Biology, basically all programs outside of Economics and Mathematics rank highly. It doesn't feature an engineering school.

FSU is one of the most underrated schools in the country, if you use the US News rankings as your opinion for rankings. It has a great party/sports scene, is in a warm weather climate, and has solid academics. It shouldn't be ranked in the 110s. Ohio State is similar in the sports/party atmosphere, and also has great programs. All 3 are similar schools, Indiana has a slight edge in overall academic reputation. My knowledge of OSU and FSU isn't as great as IU because I didn't apply/willingly research either school.

Peer assessment scores for the 3 schools are the following:
Indiana: 3.8
Ohio State: 3.7
Florida State: 3.1

I haven't actually visited OSU's campus, but I've heard from several people that some areas are a little run-down. Bloomington is in a fact a great college town and IU does have a beautifull campus. In the party-scene aspect, I would have to give a slight edge to FSU. Then again, there's plenty of partying in any college town.
As far as the hockey club, Florida is not known for it's hockey teams or hockey culture. FSU does have a pretty popular hockey club team. I've actually attended a few of their games, and they had a fairly good crowd in attendance. Obviously, IU and OSU have a much bigger hockey scene.
My advice would be to look at IU as your first choice. If you want to experience a scence completely different from the Big 10 schools, then consider FSU.
A2Wolves, thanks for the kind words about FSU. I agree about it being underrated. The administration is expecting FSU to climb back in the rankings and get back where we used to be a few years ago.

I think FSU's underrated as well. As for college scene, it'd be hard to get better in Florida. UF's the only real competition in Florida.

At OSU, the campus changes from normal to ghetto before you know it. I would say go to IU.

And about Club Hockey, if you didn't play on your HS team or you didn't play some high level of travel hockey (Junior A, AAA), you likely will find the commitment and level of competition too much.

I played on my High-School team, but suffered a sports injury. Traveling won't be a big deal an I've traveled so much I am use to it. A country over still feels like I am close to home. I will look more into IU.

My daughter will be attending OSU in the fall. She decided at the last minute to change her decision to attend Virginia Tech. I have to support her in her decision, but I hate the thought of her being on that big, ugly campus. I always dreamed of her being on a beautiful, safe campus that had a more "college like" feel to it (and by that I mean smaller and more personal). As another poster stated, after freshman year many students live in off-campus housing and it is not pretty. Kind of scary, in fact.

I would definitely consider looking at IU and FSU more closely.
