Ohio State Honors vs. UMich

I have a friend who got accepted to both programs and wants to know your opinion on where he should go.

He is planning on majoring in economics (planning to get masters). He received a full ride into ohio state but has to pay 15000 if he wants to go to michigan. His parents can pay for undergraduate, but he will have to take out loans if he goes to graduate school.

So what will be the better choice.

Full ride for tOSU Honors > $15k/yr for Michigan, IMO

A Master’s in econ is not worth much. It’s PhD or bust and most good PhD candidates are fully funded. If his parents will pay for UM go there.

On the one hand, I agree with UCBChemGrad. A full ride at a good honors program in decent state university is a better value than any university (Michigan included) at $15,000K/year. That’s $60,000 over years. That’s one full year of graduate school.

On the other hand, I agree with barrons. A Master’s degree in Economics is worthless. If your family can afford Michigan, which at $15K/year is a real bargain, I would say go for it. Overall, Michigan is signlificantly better than OSU and Michigan’s Econ department is generally ranked in or around the top 10 nationally.

A Masters in econ is not typically a terminal degree.

UMich >>>>> OSH.

It’s the national reputation and the insanely good econ department that make the difference.

If the parents are paying, Michigan.

If he has to pay himself, OSU.

Even if he has to pay himself, Michigan will definitely provide a much better experience. It may very well be worth it if he can get solid loans.

Opportunity cost for undergrad econ at tOSU equals opportunity cost for undergrad econ at Michigan, despite rankings.

Save your money (or your parents money) and go to OSU.

who’s ever heard of ohio state university?

I agree with UCB on this one. Where you get your undergraduate degree doesn’t really matter. People only care about where you go for grad school. So why not save the money?

If the parents want to pay for Michigan, sure, that would be cool. But I’m sure they’d appreciate the OP taking a full-ride scholarship.

However, if you go to OSU, be prepared to withstand ridicule, especially from SEC people…

Only if your friend is quite sure about graduate school. I wouldn’t be asking this question if you didn’t mention about “planning to get masters”. What kind of career does your friend have in mind with a master degree in economics?

not only is michigan a better program, but i know from friends who go to both schools that ohio state students are going to provide a much more amotivational atmosphere than michigan students will, as peers.

This is an interesting discussion because I have always found OSU honors an intriguing program. Elsijfdl, are your friends who are finding a more "amotivational " (I assume you mean the opposite of motivational) atmosphere in the honors program, or just at OSU in general.

Well, he wants to get his Masters for sure, and says he will probably end up with a ph.d.

Ultimately, he wants to work for the government (world bank, department of defense) or if he is really good, a think tank.

just at OSU in general

I think this picture says it all.

Go to Michigan! hehe!!!

That must have been after they played Wisconsin. When was the last time UM beat them??

OSU>Michigan.

Shame on you Barrons. Hehe! Last time Michigan beat OSU in Football was back in 2003. They have certainly had our number lately.
