Just dropped off my son. So many new dorms have been built on North Campus in the past two years to accommodate the freshmen and sophomore students who are newly required to live the first two years on campus. Nice that all the construction has ended. Besides the new dorms there is beautiful landscape, interlocking paver walkways, a new recreational center (nowhere near the size of the R-Pac, but more like a branch outlet), and several outdoor basketball courts also built. I think South campus has long been a favorite location for freshman, but with the new North campus and great dining facility (Traditions at Scott) it now has some competition lol.
@trackmbe3 , I agree! My son is in Barrett house on north campus and a freshman. While Barrett is one of the older dorms that was incorporated into the new plan, it is situated in a beautiful green space and very close to a smaller eatery and sand volleyball courts. We are very impressed.
My son just moved into Raney which was new in Fall of 2015. It’s great to be in a new dorm with AC but I do think they could have done a better job designing the new furnishings to maximize storage. E.g., the closet, which is only half-height so girls with dresses are sort of screwed, has no shelf above the closet rod so the space above the closet is totally wasted. And it wouldn’t have killed them to put some hooks in a logical place to hang a wet towel. But these are truly first world problems and I hope my son has a wonderful experience this year. The move-in process was really well done and I now believe them when they say that Michigan sent people down to study how tOSU handles it :).
My son just moved into Torres. New hall that opened last year. I agree about the closet. Definitely room and a need for a shelf over the rod. My son is going to try to somehow add one. Otherwise he has a great set up. He lived on South campus last year and also loved it. He is going to miss going through the oval every day.
Don’t lose all hope for shelves above the rod in the new North dorms. My DD is in Bowen and they had just installed them prior to move-in. Her door wouldn’t lock when she left and they said the lock had been disabled because the shelving was added to the closets just before move-in and the lock hadn’t been reactivated. So it seems like they’re adding them, just not sure if they’ll be doing it while students are living there?
Sorry to post again so soon. However, I do agree about the height. My DD didn’t take any longer dresses, but if she did, there is nowhere to hang them. A Command hook on the back of the door would be her only hope with her room’s setup (the closets are side by side instead of separated by the door like in others). But yeah, total first world problems!
I totally agree. The entire area is beautiful. My wife and I couldn’t of been more impressed. My son is also in one of the older dorms, Norton House, but the common area was done over and he has a/c so all is good. He is also directly across from Scott House so he has less than a minute walk to the dining hall as well as the beautiful new rec center they built in that area as well. So happy he ended up in the North section of campus!
Nothing to add other then I agree with all of the above! Improvements look wonderful!! My son is in Taylor Tower for the 2nd year (he liked it there last year) and was quite impressed with their new bike racks (even though he doesn’t have one down there) LOL.
