Ohio State or Miami University?

I’ve narrowed where I want to go to University down to Ohio State University and Miami University of Ohio. I’ve been accepted to both and tuition is not an issue.
I’m being really indecisive because I really like both.

Any suggestions that might help me make up my mind?
Anybody have any opinions about either school that might help me make up my mind?

Are you looking for an urban experience or traditional college town experience?

Areas around OSU are pretty urban and getting to downtown is easy. Some are put off by the downside of city life- crime, sketchy housing, traffic.

MU is pretty isolated from everything. Would you be happy spending 4 yrs at the same coffee shops, bars, movie theater? Yet, the town around it certainly caters to the school. It looks like a picture postcard of college life.

I would think that plays into your decision.

There are a lot of issues. Large or medium sized public university? City or rual? Research university or undergraduate centered? Diverse student body or mostly conservative, preppy?

Probably the most important factor will be what your major is. Quite frankly, the only college/department where Miami can compete with Ohio State is business. If you’re looking to major in engineering, hard sciences or humanities/social sciences, there really is a huge gap in the quality of the departments, faculty and student bodies that you will find.

I’ve found many related information in this particular thread regarding TOSU and Miami of Oxford:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/miami-university-ohio/1076746-how-selective-has-ohio-state-become.html

Hope this helps!! G’Luck!! & Go Bucks!! :)

If I were you, I would write out what you envision your college experience involving and then see what school fits that vision.

Do you want to study abroad? How do the programs offered compare?
Do you see yourself doing undergrad research, and with what professors? Does one school or the other have particular faculty members/areas of research that interest you?
What are internship/job opportunities like at each school? Does that interest you?
What clubs would you like to participate in? Do they exist at the school you’re considering? Do you want to go greek? Or do you hate the idea? Compare that to the % of students who do.
What do most students do during the summers? Does the school advertise certain opportunities that appeal to you?
How do you feel about sports?
Would you prefer to live in a city, or a more rural area?

I just don’t know which one would suit me better.

I’m plan to major in Biology, and I want to go on to Med School. Which school do you think would be better for this major and if I plan to go to Medical School?
I live in one of the biggest cities in the world right now, so that would make me think OSU because it’s in Columbus. However, in this big city, I’m only involved in a small community.

I visited both campuses, and I liked Miami’s campus, and housing better. But on the other hand Ohio State probably has more to offer because of it’s size.

Still not sure what to do . . .

I think that I can bring a valuable perspective to this. I am currently a business student at Ohio State, but I actually transferred from my first college which happens to be Miami U. Two of my best friends are pre-med students at OSU, and we have a world class hospital and med program. I have taken introductory science courses at both schools (I originally thought that I would be an engineering major) and I can say that not only are OSU’s classes in this department more challenging, but I learned a great deal more in them. I liked the dorms at Miami, but I did not find the diversity that I wanted there. I made the tough decision to leave Miami (and my girlfriend who is finishing her degree still in Oxford) to attend OSU. I have not doubted my decision for a single second. I love being a buckeye, I love the pride that nearly the entire population has in their school, and most of all I love the people who surround me. Miami definitely fits the mold of J Crew U, and I felt shunned because I chose against joining a frat there. On the other side, OSU has a hugely diverse student and faculty demographic. Easy decision for me.

Look at this way. One of these schools is confident enough in its position that it doesn’t need to compete against The Other State Universities. The other has become so desperate in how far behind it is falling that it runs 2 banner ads 24/7 on the other school’s forum.

Be warned against Miami graduates fond memories of the school. Miami used to be a public ivy, but it’s now fallen drastically in the rankings and in reality. When I visited their campus, one of their professors (whose name I will keep private) told me to seriously consider OSU instead. In science programs, OSU is the way to go. Miami only still has the lead in business education and perhaps in pre-law. If you can get into OSU, I would recommend it if you are a bio major…

From my friends who have gone to Miami Ohio, it seems their claim to fame is providing the closest to what you may call a “stereotypical” college life: tight knit community, middle-class people, college town atmosphere, and fraternities/sororities rule the social scene.

“Miami only still has the lead in business education”

I don’t know if I’d agree. From the ratings I have seen OSU is higher. This does depend on what you look at but USNews and World Report does a good job and they have OSU near top ten in the country. I would guess the programs are comprable but the networking opportunities at OSU because of its size and alumni beat MU by a bit.

I would say that Miami is competitive with Ohio State for (undergrad only) business. For pre-law, I would say it’s not even close. The social science and humanities departments at Ohio State are world class (ranking nationally anywhere from top 10 to top 30). Miami’s, quite frankly, are irrelevant on a national level.

One interesting stat is that two-thirds of undergraduates at Miami major in business or education. At Ohio State, eight of the top ten most popular majors are in the hard sciences, humanities or social sciences. For all of Miami of Ohio’s talk about being “like a small liberal arts college” the student body is overwhelmingly vocational; whereas Ohio State’s seems much more committed to a classic liberal arts education while still having great engineering and business colleges.

I was also inbetween osu and miami for awhile. I fell in love with osu because of its social atmosphere. When I visited Miami, there were areas of campus that felt like a ghost town.

I always had the same feeling. That’s why I left Miami. I love it in Columbus though. If you want social students OSU is the place to go.
