Ohio State or Purdue for aerospace?

Son has been accepted to both Oho State and Purdue (Honors for both) for aerospace engineering. Ohio resident, so instate tuition for OSU ($4,000 OSU scholarships) and OOS tuition for Purdue. He received enough Purdue scholarships and grants to bring the cost for both to about equal.

He really liked Purdue, but he really liked OSU. He will have to make the ultimate decision, but would like to hear how you would decide?

bump to the top

If cost is equal, my decision would be Purdue 100%. From everything I’ve heard, it’s one of the premier engineering colleges in the nation. But second, and more importantly imo, you only go through college once. A lot of people take for granted how few kids get the chance to go out of state for college because of financial reasons, so if your son has a golden opportunity to not only go experience being in a new, foreign setting, but to attend a better school as well, then I say take it an run.

Of course, your son might have a different view on college altogether. But just be careful that it’s not just his comfort zone that’s keeping him at OSU.

In short, TOSU’s ME/Aerospace engineering facilities are almost all brand new (I am certain Purdue’s facilities are also top-notch). TOSU is overall higher ranked academically than Purdue; however, Purdue is probably higher ranked in terms of ME/Aerospace program(s). Nevertheless, TOSU - Columbus is urban and certainly offers a lot more opportunities and activities than West Lafayette of Purdue. Last but not least, TOSU is one of the very few colleges in America that owns and operates teaching airport close to the campus.

Excerpt:

"The Ohio State University Airport (OSU) is one of the leading general aviation facilities in the nation, providing educational opportunities to the universitys students and aircraft services to many of central Ohios pilots and businesses.

The OSU Airport began in 1943 as a flight training facility for military and civilian pilots, operated by the OSU School of Aviation. The OSU Airport now operates as a self-supporting entity of The Ohio State University through the Department of Aerospace Engineering & Aviation.

"The Department oversees all aspects of the Airport from Airport Management, to Fixed Base Operations, to Airport Maintenance.

Today, the OSU Airport serves as a general aviation reliever for Port Columbus International Airport. Its status as a Part 139 Certificated Airport assures the aviation community that the facility will meet specific standards in terms of operations and maintenance.

The OSU Airport is home to 230 aircraft, including single- and multi-engine, piston and turbine engine aircraft and rotorcraft. The OSU Airport oversees an estimated 100,000 operations per year, including corporate activity, student training, and pleasure flying. By comparison, the OSU Airport generally ranks in the top five airports in Ohio in the number of take-offs and landings with Cleveland Hopkins, Port Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati Lunken.

Primary users of the facility include local businesses and residents; as well as, transient users. The Airport is also home to the OSU Department of Aerospace Engineering & Aviation Gas Turbine Laboratory, several facilities operated by the OSU College of Agriculture, the Ohio Department of Transportations Office of Aviation, fourteen corporate flight departments, and four flying clubs."

In short, whichever institution he chooses to attend at the end, he will do more than fine imho!!

broncos1997 and Sparkeye7. Thanks for the responses. Son will do fine at either school. Its just the small task of a high school kid deciding his future.

Any other opinions out there?

This is a great problem to have. I work for the Air Force with graduates of both schools. The DDs of friends who went into engineering went to Purdue OOS (full pay) rather than tOSU. Great programs, great internships. For the same price I would probably recommend Purdue.

Thanks for the post. It really is a good problem to have.
