Ohio State or Va Tech for Engineering?

OOS for both.
Cost for OSU less due to scholarships; however think I want a college town atmosphere.
What about the reputation of the programs? Looking to do Computer Science–EE as a backup.
Ave starting salaries at Va Tech much higher based on university published reports.
I know Tech has a really strong CO OP program.
Looking for an all around college experience.

Ohio State is ranked higher for computer science. Salary differences can be because OSU students tend to stay more in midwest, whereas VTech students might be working more in east coast, where both the cost of living and salaries are higher.

@kooth12 If you’re looking for an all-around college experience Ohio State may be one of if not the best in the nation…you don’t find the combination of athletics/academics/bars/parties you do here anywhere else

@osuprof and @kiddy34: Thanks for the feedback. My dad said the same thing about the salaries. OSU has great page on averages for BS and MS in Computer Science and the incremental change is well worth pursuing a Masters in Computer Science–much larger than for other engineering majors.

This may not be influential in your decision but why not post. I have two family friends that transferred out of Virginia tech after their first semester. One went to Ohio state of that means anything.

All information is useful. Do you know why they transferred out? Too remote? I know the winters can be depressing with the overcast skies–but I am thinking it would be similar at both locations.

Both of my college aged kids had VT on their radar. One consideration was the ease of getting home. We live in MD and that’s a 4-5 hour car ride from VT with no easy flight options. OSU is a 15 minute uber to the airport and southwest routinely has flights for less than 100.

Also, when you visit either college again, do something fun like a sporting event, or go to dinner or a bar where the students hang. That’s the best way to see if you see yourself there. Assuming everything else equal.

@new2OSU thanks. Brother attends Tech. We live in NJ. He takes Train home or bus part way. Issue with columbus is airfare is expensive most of the time (400+) from Newark and JFK and Laguardia are out of the question. Would have to drive a few hours to get to another airport with cheaper fares. going to be attending Admitted Students reception in two weeks for OSU and plan to find out how others handle the travel.

The one that didn’t go to Ohio state transferred for reasons that didn’t really have to do with tech. She didn’t get into her first choice out of high school where her boyfriend goes. I’m not sure why the other transferred, but Osu is two hours less of a drive from where we live and maybe it was cheaper or better for her major(which I don’t know)
