my son is a sophmore at osu and loves it. he also doing great academically.my daugther has been accepted there and also au uwm.the scholarships are equal .she wants to major in journalism and minor in music.she’s visited uwm twice and is headed there again this weekend.she’s been to osu a couple of times ,but just to visit her brother or on family + sibs weekend.all she talked about was osu until she visited uwm.we live in illinois so it’s only a 3 hour drive. they don’t have minors there, and it’s not thet osu family feel to it.everyone tells me it’s a better academic school, but i think osu is a better fit for her.anyone with an opinion please respond.i’m trying to stay neutral, but i know anyplace my son goes when you say you attend the ohio state university peoples eyes light up.i don’t see this when you say uwm

We were in a similar dilemma with Penn State. DS was accepted to Smeal Business School which has a higher Business week ranking than OSU. DS and we wrestled with the decision but in the end the OSU Family feel won us over. We are oos (NJ) knew very little about OSU at the beginning of the application process but felt that the “high touch” ds received during the admissions process, the friendliness ofthe folks on campus, and the amazing facilities sealed the deal. Other factor for us which may not be the case with U.Wisconsin, is that PSU is in the middle of nowhere and ds and we liked Colombus and the work/play opportunities it apears to offer.

Good luck!

I am pro-OSU, but I am not sure their journalism department is that great. However, I know nothing about the reputation of Wisconsin’s journalism department either, and I don’t think that is one of their strong suits. I would agree that historically Wisconsin has been considered a better academic school, but I think OSU has been making a lot of gains in this area. Since kids change their majors a lot, I think it would come down to where does she feel most comfortable? I have been at OSU several times the last few months including the last weekend. I’ve noticed that there is a positive energy level there that I haven’t picked up on at many other college campuses. That could be my interpretation, but my D has noticed it as well. I live in the Chicago area so I’ve been to Wisconsin a few times, and I just don’t get the same positive buzz there.
