Ohio State University Honors Program

Hey all, I’m going to be attending OSU in autumn 2013 with a major in Mechanical Engineering. Personal stats are top 3% of class, 35 ACT, 6 AP’s and 4 Post-Secondaries. My issue is deciding whether or not to join the honors program next year in Mech Engineering. I understand that I’ll make many valuable connections, but is it worth the price of a possibly poor GPA? GPA is much more important than “graduation with honors” so I don’t want to risk one for the other. To those who are in the program, has it affected your GPA? Also, I’m a partier on the weekends but ready to study diligently during the week.

Hi,
My son is a second year in Engineering Honors. He found the first year to be very challenging however is glad he did it. He was still able to find time for some social life as he did pledge a fraternity. I think he may have gotten a couple B’s that could have been A’s without the Honors but that did not take a big toll on the GPA. I understand the companies like to see the Honors when awarding internships, etc.

My younger brother is currently in FEH (freshman engineering honors), and a close friend of mine went through FEH and then TA’d for one of the honors freshman engineering classes. The honors engineering classes and requirements aren’t meant to hurt your GPA. The courses aren’t graded harshly, and the honors engineering students get a lot of support in their classes, and do interesting work. I think you will find the work challenging, and you won’t be able to avoid having work on the weekends, but you will certainly have time for some partying most weekends.
