Ohio State University or Indiana University?

I have been admitted to The Ohio State University - Columbus (Direct admit to the Fisher school of Business) and Indiana University - Bloomington

The US News and Rankings for both the Business Schools are very close
OSU - 14th and Indiana - 12th

Which one should I go to if I intend to major in Business and Computer Science ?

Thank You !

Bump !!!

I am on the business faculty at Michigan. My MBA is from Indiana. I have friends on both faculties. My money is on Indiana - it’s a much much nicer place to live. I dont think the IU program is quite as large but to my mind that’s an advantage

The two business schools are essentially going to be equal, and you’re going to waste time trying to split hairs to come up with a decision based on a couple of ranking spots. Take a look at the overall university: location, student body, campus and possibly other areas of academic interest.

IMO Indiana is the clear choice. Much better recruiting and gives you the opportunity to go the ibanking route if you would like to.

Thanks for all the replies, will take the suggestions into consideration !

I am facing the same dilemma. Both the schools are good. However, I’ve received extraordinary feedback on fisher. Columbus is a huge campus and great place to be considering its the capital. Indiana on the other hand is a much smaller town.

One question however which crosses my mind is- which school is more selective and prestigious and offers better recruitment opportunities in the long run ?

Just going on location…Indiana as a state is blah… Flat and boring. Ohio is beautiful! We have hills!

There will likely be many more internship opportunities in Columbus because it’s a large city and the state capital of Ohio. There is also just a larger job market in general in Columbus and Ohio overall(considering all of the major cities). In my opinion, Columbus and Ohio as a state are much nicer than Indiana. You should visit both campuses and cities before you make a decision though. Good luck, and GO BUCKS!

My son was torn between business, engineering, and pre-med for undergrad. He was accepted as an honors student at IU (pre-admit for business), Purdue (pre-admit for engineering), and OSU where he is currently an engineering major.

The Indiana schools had very generous automatic scholarships that brought the OOS cost close to IS cost. IU was really nice and sent him an IU scarf to welcome him into Kelley.

However, he chose OSU because he felt it gave him more freedom to switch majors easily and still be in an excellent program regardless of his choice. If there is any possibility that you might decide to switch out of business, I would pick OSU because it has more competitve alternatives than IU in my opinion. The admissions people are really nice also.

I think the city atmosphere is a matter of preference. I was surprised that my son liked Columbus better than Bloomington. You just have to go there and decide for yourself.

I have my friends studying in OSU, some graduated and some are in their first year. But the common fact remains that they are absolutely in love with OSU. The tell me that Columbus is a great city while Indiana is relatively smaller. I really appreciate Ohiostate999’s feedback on the job Market, since the only fad I have regarding OSU fisher is that easier to get into and that IU kelley fares better in recruitments. Rest otherwise OSU is a clear winner by far for me. I got admittance in both of them for this fall.

Do you have a link to the relative admissions stats for Fisher and Kelley?

I do know that it’s much harder to get into Ohio State overall than Indiana.

Geez mspearl you need to get out more: compare the “hills” of Columbus to Bloomington (actually hilly). Indiana is a higher-rated school for sure in business, although I have respect for my colleagues on the OSU faculty

My advice to varun and others deciding between 2 or 3 colleges- visit and pick the best fit! I have 2 sons in college. The junior is a poly sci major. He was deciding between 3 schools once all the packages were in place. GW was an obvious pick- right in D.C. and he was 25 freshmen for a select program. He visited Rice in Houston and fell in love with everything Rice. Yes, he is surrounded by pre-med and engineering majors. But on the other hand, he’ll be interning on the Hill again this summer. Rice’s poly sci and history staffs are small but mighty. So the moral of his story- don’t let only rankings, majors and recruiting guide your decision. Love your pick too.

Did the OP get direct admit to Kelley ? I was under the impression he/she was asking about OSU-Fisher and IU regular…

Is there a financial difference? Are you in-state for one? Unless money is no object, I’d factor that in. But for me, IU is the better choice; I think the campus is wonderful and the town, though smaller than Columbus, is compact and bustling and culturally exciting.

It is also just beautiful, and–hilly, wooded, etc. If you like to hike and do things outdoors, that is an advantage. But maybe you’re more of an urban kid? If so, OSU might be better. The main thing is what you like/where you see yourself and if one is more advantageous, cost-wise. I think they are both good choices academically.

Caesercreek: lol, I guess I meant my part of Ohio - very very hilly. Appalachian foothills. I have traveled in Indiana many times (mostly northern/central) and all the parts I have seen are pretty flat compared to where I live. Never been to Bloomington though! I guess I was just generalizing. But just East/Northeast and Southeast of Columbus is very pretty countryside. Western Ohio is ugly in my opinion. But I guess everyone has their own preferences…

But regardless of locatio, I will still say OSU over Indiana.

Mspearl you will be pleasantly surprised it has a foothills kind of vibe

And as a loyal IU alum (and someone who has taught in 5 of the top 15 bschools), I will respectfully disagree that OSU is the better school where business is concerned.

Thanks for all the replies !
I got direct admission to Kelley after petitioning, so I think I’ll be going to Indiana this fall !
