Ohio State University

How was your experience (dorms, teachers, etc...)?

I am not qualified to answer your question regarding the dormitory since I never stayed at the dorm when I was there. But, I’ve heard that the newly converted Holiday Inn on Lane Ave is great! Here is more news on the dorm issue if you care to read: [OSU looks to expand dorm complex - Business First of Columbus:](http://columbus.bizjournals.com/columbus/stories/2009/09/14/daily47.html)

Teaching-wise, a typical Big Ten institution where some entry level classes can be overwhelming with hundreds of students. But overall, the school tries its best to maintain a low student-faculty ratio of 13:1 in spite of its size by hiring well over 5,000 faculties to meet the class needs. Most Profs are top in their fields, recongized nationally yet readily accessible if you care to talk with them as they also do hold regular office hours in addition to teaching in the classroom. However, they will not spoon-feed you with so many students in the class unless you are taking upper level classes in which case they ‘might’ know you by name. Of course, TAs are there to help you as well when you need more attention especially right before the exams!

Facility wise, TOSU is always constantly improving its facilities. Since I graduated in '02, there have been numerous new constructions and upgrades. For the incoming students, I say the biggest advantages for them would be the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art Main Library which costed > $100 million to renovate and its grand opening is set for this week I believe.

In addition, the brand new, student friendly union (Ohio Union) is making its debut next spring which also costed > 100 million to build.

One of the most spirited colleges in America for sure as TOSU hosts 19 men and 20 women varsity teams besides the obvious football. In terms of student activities, there are nearly 1,000 student clubs that you can participate in, so you will never feel left out in anyways!! Also, the recently completed RPAC - one of the most comprehensive gymnasiums in the country truly is blessing to all students. A $140 million construction that was not there when I was at school. All in all, I rate my TOSU experience an “A”. I was definitely academically challenged as a molecular genetics major but also had tons of fun by taking advantage of what Columbus has to offer. Hope this helps a bit… Time for bed!! :)

Thank you!

hmm… I wonder R&D Expenditures at TOSU for FY 2009 would be?!

I stand corrected on the official launching date for TOSU fundraising campaign. It is to be 2011 instead of later-on this year, mostly due to effect of the current economic recession. Nonetheless, the goal was set at $2.5 Billion minimal according to Prez Gee.

I agreed with Schmaltz’s suggestion that if one were to compare academics of TOSU to the top tier of the Big Ten, it should have been that of Illinois instead of Michigan!

Also, I had requested the Mod to remove my posts on #12 & #13, as this thread’s main focus should be that of Ohio State as one of the top public schools rather than an alum such as myself or my personal academic progress for that matter. Therefore, if I had been the source of distraction from the center of academic discussion here, I apologize. Let’s get back on track! :)

The number of applications to TOSU has jumped from little over 15k to nearly 25k in the last 5 years or so!! However, as Gee stated that due to its enormous size at the C-bus main campus, from this point on, the growth of student enrollment will only be occuring at the regional campuses.

Tressel Vest + Bow Tie Gee = Irresistible!!

It’s THE Ohio State University!!! :P

^^^^

So, why isn’t is www.tosu.edu? :-)

^^^ So long as my diploma says “The Ohio State University,” it is TOSU!!! :)

P.S. May the best team win this Sat at the Big House!!

Ohio State to open new chemistry building in 2014

In 2014, Ohio State will open a sophisticated new chemistry building that administrators say will make the university’s science programs more competitive.

The $126 million Chemical Biomolecular and Engineering and Chemistry building will replace a hodgepodge of old and in some cases dangerous science labs and classrooms. The chemical engineering side of the building will be called Koffolt Lab. The Chemistry Department has not chosen a name for its side of the building yet.

The new facility will “make recruiting easier at every level,” said Stuart Cooper, chair of the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering. “What we have now can be a disadvantage.”

A modern building will attract graduate students, freshmen and faculty. Administrators hope to increase faculty from 18 to 22, he said.

The building will include new laboratories for multiple sciences, instructional spaces and building support, according to a Facilities Operations and Development report in November.
The building project has been in the works since 2002, but will finally be put into motion by June 2011 with the demolition of Boyd Lab, Johnston Lab, the Aviation building and Haskett Hall.

The Chemical Biomolecular and Engineering Department has submitted campus proposals and feasibility reports since 2002, Cooper said. The Chemistry Department had also submitted a proposal for a new building to Facilities Operations and Development and conducted a feasibility study and report about renovating Evans Lab. University officials decided that the best option was to construct a building for both departments.

“We’ve been putting in requests and getting further and further along in the queue,” Cooper said. They also put in requests through the college in 2004, 2006 and 2008, he added.
“When they tore Lord Hall down, we were showing potential donors, ‘This is where we are going to be,’” Cooper said.

Administrators changed their mind on the building location after officials released a master plan study about a long-term vision for the university, he added.

In 2007, it was decided that the best preliminary site for the new science building was between Woodruff and 19th avenues, Cooper said. This was based on the location of the building and the “bad shape” of the buildings being torn down. The site of Haskett Hall was also included in the new plan, which increased the overall space for the new building.
Moving the building’s location frees up the Lord Hall site to be used as an English or arts building, Cooper said.

The building’s location furthers the university’s academic plan.

“The current location aligns with the principals from the Academic Facilities Plan and the One University Framework by reducing the university’s deferred maintenances,” said project manager Faye Bodyke, in an e-mail. The building “creates alignment with [the] sciences and engineering neighborhood.
