Ohio State v.s Case Western Reserve

I've been accepted to both OSU and CWRU, but I'm not sure which college would be better. As a premed student, I want the college with better access to facilities and advising that would help me get into medical school, however, from my research I haven't found a decisive conclusion about which is better. Also, I'm going to be an out of state student, so I'm not sure which location is best. Honestly, I would say that I'm not that much of a social person, but I would like to go out once a week, at least in the weekends. Money isn't a problem, so what would you guys' advice be on which would be a better fit?

I also got into UPenn, but I’m not sure how that compares with premed… Should it be my obvious choice?

Honestly, whichever you personally prefer. My own D. has been accepted to both. While Case gave her much more in Merit package, covering practically full tuition (we would be paying only $5k / year)…she ahs chosen another place for her UG, not OSU, not Case for a different reason, priamrily because it has matched her personality and a very wide range of interests.
You cannot go wrong with either. Great opprotunites are at both. They are very different schools, so choose wisely the one that fits YOU the best.
I have no knwledge pf UPenn.
Additional consideration specifically for pre-meds. Unless you have unlimited resource, choosing the cheapest UG is very wise.

Thank you for the advice, MiamiDAP.
I noticed you mentioned that they are very different schools… what exactly were you referring to when you said that?

Penn is obviously a phenomenal school with a much higher prestige level than the other two but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s where you should go.

Hopefully, mom and dad would feel the same way  UPenn is great for undergrad research opportunities. My son’s classmate who attends Cornell did summer research at UPenn. I am sure Case is a pretty good place for pre-med too. They also have an early acceptance program into their med school for Case sophomores, I believe.

"they are very different schools… what exactly were you referring to when you said that? "
-OSU - one of the biggest college in the USA. Public in Columbus with great football.
-Case is small private in Cleveland, sports are practically irrelevant.

I know many who have attended both OSU and Case, UG and Med. School. They are very top students who had all opportunities that they wished for at either place. As I have mentioned, YOU have to decide after reserach / visiting which place fits you the best. Nobody else knows your criteria and the priorities you attach to each of them.
My D. got very familiar with ALL UGs (as well as Med. Schools) before she has made her dicision. She knew that $$ were important also, but it was not her top criteria. Now, looking back while in her 3rd year in Med. School, she has mentioned numerous times that she has chosen the best place for HERSELF. Her UG was again very different from both OSU and Case and had everything that SHE was looking for.
Make decision based on what YOU are anticipating to have in you next 4 years. Med. School is only one aspect of your goal. If you end up unhappy in UG, if you end up feeling out of place personally, it would be would be much harder to achieve the goal of being accepted to Med. School. Please, pay attention to your personal preferences the most.

We will see about that, if tOSU and UA (my alma mater), the pre-season #2 and #1 teams, meet in the national championship game :)

I do not follow sports, I just mentioned for those who do. The main attraction for me is swimming, they do not show it at all, only once / 4 years. But I heard if you are at OSU and happend to be a wolverine fan (many in Ohio are U of M fans), you would not dare to mention it, you better not, it is pretty crazy. No first hand experience though, just rumors.

Case has nationally recognized biomedical engineering, great advising, and lots of fun smart pre-meds. It tends to accept a fair number of it’s own for med school, and Cleveland Clinic is next door for research and a free medical education if accepted.

OSU is a huge school with somewhat limited pre-med advising, but if you ferret them out, good research opportunities. You will have to be much more proactive to go talk to professors and offer to do research there. The honors college is great, but outside the honors college (they get first choice) it can be hard to get into some classes.

If you are paying out of state tuition at OSU, I would take Case hands down. The main advantage of OSU is low in-state tuition for those of us in Ohio.

UPenn is a great school too, especially the Vagelos biochem program.

Thank you everyone for your help
I’ve now narrowed it down to Case and UPenn…

"The main advantage of OSU is low in-state tuition for those of us in Ohio. "
-Frankly it was NOT the case for my D. We are in OH and if she chooses either Case or OSU, we would spent much much less at Case than at OSU. OSU have so many applicants, it has to spread Merit awards very thin. Case simply gave my D. much more in Merit award. However, she happened to choose the UG where she was on full Merit award for all 4 years. Case is a great Med. School that accepts very top applicants from the very top UGs in the country and some others. The most represented at Case Med. School are California applicants primarily from Berkeley, surprise!!

Don’t you mean next to Ohio applicants? Due to the sheer number of California applicants you could probably say that about almost all medical schools.

My daughter wants to study biological sciences but not necessarily toward an MD. At Case, would she get opportunities for undergraduate research? How would you rate the commitment to undergrad research there relative to Tulane or U.Miami?

From my understanding, Bio research is available everywhere. My D. was interning for 3 years during school year while in UG. The university where she was in UG did not even have a Medical School. She really liked it, was given an opportunity to write a grant proposal and received it and it was in a area of her personal interest. It was very easy to obtain and resulted in great LOR. I am not sure how you ortain relative rating and on top I am not familiar with either of the schools on your list in respect to opportunities for UG students. As far as I know close to 100% of pre-meds are involved in Medical Research at various UGs and that would be the same type that your D. is looking forward to have.

If you want to go to med school, you should choose the college where you would be likely to earn the highest GPA. Personally, I love OSU, and think there would be multiple opportunities there. Are you part of the honors college?

yeah, i got accepted into the honors college…

You have to be happy at the place. And saying your self that place will determine you grades is NOT a good approach. No, you have to say that you will do VERY WELL everywhere. You will have a better chance at this goal at the place that fits your personality the best. So, allow yourself time to discover everything that you possibly can about each UG and ask yourself where you belong. Listen to yourself first, before you listen to others.
