Ohio State vs Minnesota

I am trying to decide between Ohio State and Minnesota for Fall 2007. I am from Ohio, about 2 hours from Columbus. As far as tuition, after scholarships, Minnesota is 300 dollars less than Ohio State, so they're pretty much even. I plan to double major in English (Literature Emphasis) and History. I would also like to study abroad, in conjuction with whatever language I decide to take (I'm thinking either French or German, hopefully I can learn both). Can anyone provide some insight on this decision? Academically? Socially? Campus? Overall? Thanks for any help.

If it's not going to cost you more, I lean towards the chance to get away from your own home area. I know MN isn't vastly different from OH, but there are differences and I think that will add to the experience.

This is just my particular bias--I personally found it really broadening to move further away from home and make a choice that was somewhat atypical for people from my area. There may be other considerations more important to you.

I agree with the sentiment, but in this particular case I question how much "broadening" someone from the midwest can derive from from attending a huge state school in one part of the midwest versus attending another huge state school in another part of the midwest.

Data mostly drawn from USNWR

OBJECTIVE DATA

Undergraduate Enrollment:
Minnesota: 32,817 Ohio State: 37,411

In-state Student Population as % of All Undergrads:
Minnesota: 67% Ohio State: 88%

Cost (Tuition & Fees):
Minnesota: $9,432 in-state, $21,062 out-of-state Ohio State: $8,667 in-state, $20,562 out-of-state

Graduation & Retention Rank
Minnesota: 128th Ohio State: 103rd
-% of Students expected to graduate in 6 years:
Minnesota: 63% Ohio State: 63%
-% of students who do graduate in 6 years:
Minnesota: 61% Ohio State: 68%

Faculty Resources Rank:
Minnesota: 123rd Ohio State: 63rd
-% of classes with 50+ students
Minnesota: 15% Ohio State: 17%
-% of classes with <20 students
Minnesota: 41% Ohio State: 43%
-Faculty/student ratio
Minnesota: 15/1 Ohio State: 13/1

Student Selectivity Rank:
Minnesota: 77th Ohio State: 62nd
-Average SAT/ACT:
Minnesota: 23-28 Ohio State: 24-28
-% of students ranking in top 10% of high school class
Minnesota: 34% Ohio State: 39%
-% acceptance rate
Minnesota: 71% Ohio State: 74%

Financial Resources Rank:
Minnesota: 42nd Ohio State: 70th

Alumni Giving % and Rank:
Minnesota: 13% (127th) Ohio State: 15% (105th)

2006 Football Score:
Minnesota: Ohio State: (Did Not Play Each Other-Good for MN!) :)

SUBJECTIVE DATA

Peer Assessment:
Minnesota:3.8 Ohio State: 3.7

On the objective data, I would have to give Ohio State the advantage as OSU has the statistical advantage in every category except for Financial Resources. Cost-wise, as an Ohio resident, you would be paying about 2.5x what you would pay to go to Minnesota than what you would pay to attend OSU in Columbus. Based on these considerations, it’s hard to make the case to go to Minnesota.

True, which is why I had the caveat that MN isn't vastly different from Ohio. But the differences are there, some cultural, some historical. We midwesterners aren't all as alike as outsiders sometimes think. :) I also think being further from home has an impact (possibly not all positive, of course).

The OP indicated that this cost difference does not, in fact, exist in his case.

6 in 1 hand, half dozen in another. IMO ohio state - better athletics - i.e. more fun. also its probably has better weather.

hoedown, thanks for the correction. The information that I provided is generic and would not apply in the OP's individual case.

As for hoedown's rec to consider somewhere else, you might want to look at schools of similar size, in the same ranking neighborhood as Ohio State (USNWR # 57), but geographically distant. Some possibilities include U Georgia (# 60, Texas A&M (# 60), U Florida (# 47), U Texas (# 47), U Washington (# 42).

Oh. If the intention is to provide generic information on cost, I would recommend providing information on more than just the difference between in-state OH tuition and MN nonresident tuition.

Here's that information so anyone interested in a comparison can pull the correct 2006-07 numbers for their residency situation (at least for tuition--housing may also have some differences):

U-MN resident tuition & required fees: $9,173
OSU resident tuition & required fees: $8,667

U-MN nonresident tuition & required fees: $20,803
OSU nonresident tuition & required fees: $20,562

What I meant by generic is that the numbers were the publicly available figures (as published by USNWR) and not adjusted for scholarships and other factors. The information on costs that I presented was drawn directly from the latest version of USNWR. Our OSU figures are identical. Our MN figures differ by a few hundred dollars.

No, I'm the idiot here--how did I miss that you provided both already? I shouldn't post before 10 am.
