OHIO STATE vs UMARYLAND

i am really caught between these schools because of the things they have to offer to me, but i just cannot decide between the two.

-female
-african amer.
-major-engineering undecided
-home state-NJ

Ohio State
PROS
-admitted into the engineering program
-summer minority engr. program (5 weeks, program is free)
-awesome career services
-met w the asst. dean of minority engr. and was very nice, she made me feel like ohio state would have my back through everything
CONS
-9 hour drive
-cold weather
-probably living on north campus (not interested in sharing a room w 3 other girls)
-cannot have a summer job & missing out on my last summer w my friends bc of the 5 week program

*the summer program allows me to be eligible for future scholarships

Maryland
PROS
-3 hour drive
-warm weather
-beautiful campus
-have transportation for tri-state area on holidays
CONS
-not admitted into engineering program
-no summer engr. program (its available to admitted engr. students, it costs 3,000)
-a lot of core reqs.

*maryland said that i would be taking the same classes as engr. students and it wouldnt delay my plan to grad. in 4yrs.
*there is also a summer program thats 5 weeks IF i went, but it also costs 3,000 and i would be taking a psych course which is a core req.

Both schools
-great school spirit & sports
-cost to attend are equal

sorry for such a long post but this is a very important decision for me! please give me any helpful feedback:)

I don’t know if I’d say UMd has “warm” weather, maybe warmer. The average temp is 2 degrees higher in the summer and 5 degrees higher in the winter. [Average Weather for College Park, MD - Temperature and Precipitation](Ashburn, VA Monthly Weather Forecast - weather.com) Still not balmy.

I guess the question is how wedded are you to the idea of engineering? That seems to be the big difference. If you really want to be an engineer then I would go to tOSU.

Ohio State - the summer program is a great transition - you’ll make lifelong friends and have a big advantage/network going into fall.

Umd sports not in same ballpark as OSU. Actually in financial trouble.

<a href=“UM athletics cuts: College Park suffers from its bad bet on basketball”>UM athletics cuts: College Park suffers from its bad bet on basketball;

Both Jersey and Maryland are areas in which tOSU recruit heavily based on its diversity plan. Geographic diversity (Columbus campus, autumn 2011)

500+: Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, California, Michigan

300 – 499: Texas, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia

100 – 299: Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Utah, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona, Tennessee, Connecticut

50 – 99: West Virginia, Washington, Colorado, South Carolina, Kansas

Having said that, I believe both schools are outstanding academically, and that Erin’s Dad is correct in terms of weather being the non-factor imho. Barrons linked article points out that Maryland has 240,000, whereas tOSU has 525,000 living alumni across the globe with 247,000 living in the state of Ohio. Obviously, there is a big difference in terms of alumni network. Without getting into the specifics of an individual program (sorry…, I am busy. I shall allow other posters to contribute in the discussion), overall academic-wise, tOSU is 2 points higher than UMD based on the latest USNWR Undergrad Academic Reputation Score.

P.S. The annual ‘African American Heritage Festival’ held on tOSU campus is the one of the largest in the country. Best of Luck! :)

^^^^tOSU must be giving out lots of scholarship money to get students from Michigan. ;-)

I am not denying it! ;-)

Nevertheless, there are certainly exceptions:

UMD isnt warm weather. Its seasonal just like NJ, i live in NJ too, and ill agree that Columbus winters suck more then ours haha. I think you make it a tie between the two, so im just giving my 2 cents.

Your last summer with your friends won’t make or break your future friendships, but i understand itll definitely but a damper on your summer. Also there is nothing wrong with living with 3 other ppl. Why would you want to be alone? It gives you a chance to have your own separate room and also interact and be social all the time. You may end up really liking those roommates (assuming this is a suite).

Also if sports are important to you id go with OSU haha. Maryland football is a joke, and so if there basketball. OSU has top programs in both major sports.

But on the flip side OSU has 50+ thousand students more towards 60000. So I mean just understand that going in.

^^

Well, it’s actually 42,000 for undergrad now, the rest are graduate students. UMD’s student-to-faculty ratio is at 18:1, so it’s not exactly small either. In addition, tOSU has recently allocated $300 million to progressively hire 300 more tenure-track professors in an attempt to drop its student-to-faculty ratio to roughly 14:1. So I would say tOSU clearly has advantage over UMD despite its massive student body due to its abundant resources.
