How is Ohio University for pre-med? Is there a lot of research, volunteer, jobs, etc? I heard this school revolves around partying...is that really all what students do here?..what about the academically serious students like me?

I don’t know how it is for pre-med specifically, but I wouldn’t worry about the partying too much. I visited there back in January, and my tour guide said how there’s really a place for everyone, and no one has to party if they don’t want to. It’s a fairly large school, so there are all types of students there.

do you know what students do besides partying?

Yeah, they are taking classes. Not every kid parties. Also, the parties minimizes along with bad grades.

i meant in terms of fun…like what do they do for fun besides partying?

There are a lot of different types of festivals in downtown Athens (music, film, etc), I know, right off the top of my head. There are all sorts of different clubs, religious organizations, etc.

Hi Lynseymarc,

As a pre-med student, I definitely wouldn’t worry about OU’s party scene. I don’t have too much experience with the pre-med program, but I know from all of my pre-med friends that it keeps you busy. And because it is such a strenuous program, I think you’ll find that a lot of other students in it aren’t focused on party life either.

Athens has a lot to offer that’s not party-based, you just have to scratch beneath the surface. There’s a wonderful local scene (great farmer’s market, tons of wonderful local bands and a lot of fantastic food) and the surrounding community is full of really neat people. Because the school is so big, there’s always someone new to meet, and you’ll find that there are a lot of really cool sub-communities full of people who aren’t partiers at all.

As for research programs - the Voinovich school (<a href=“Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service | Ohio University”>Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service | Ohio University) has some great opportunities, and I’m sure that beyond that you’ll find a lot of other ways to get involved. There are great job opportunities on campus, through work-study, regular hiring positions and the PACE Program (<a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Services | Ohio University”>Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Services | Ohio University). There are also tons of ways to volunteer and get involved both on campus and in the community. You can really ask to get involved with anything, and it’s likely that the professor or organization you’re talking to will say yes.

I really enjoy OU, and if the party scene is all that’s holding you back I’d recommend you look a bit further into the programs here. But that being said, every college has something different to offer. Let me know if you have any more questions!
