I am having trouble sorting through all the brochures for different state universities in OHIO. I would like to get past the brochure and website hype to the real reputations of state schools in OHIO, particularly University of Akron, Kent State, Bowling Green and University of Cincinnati. Can anyone help??

University of Cincinnati is the best of those four...Kent State is somewhat infamous for the National Guard incident, but other than that, I'm not sure...I wouldn't reccomend Bowling Green (I'm from Toledo, have visited the campus...) if you are interested in nice dorms, because that's something bowling green lacks. That said, they have a good english/journalism program (relatively speaking) and I'm not familiar with Akron

The four state schools you mention are pretty equivalent in terms of academics and admissions. Bowling Green is best known for its beer and STDs (no joke); Cinnci for sports/greek scene; Kent for the more laid back crowd. I've also heard BG has crappy dorms (go figure), but the university is strong in dance and education. If you are looking for a better journalism/english program, OU would probably be the better route. The two other schools (three, I'm not familiar with Akron either) have about the same variety of programs. Some other Ohio schools with similar stats include Wright State, UD, Xavier and Ohio Northern (last three slightly more competitive).

I agree with saint paul on the beer and STDs at BG (I have heard that many times)

University of Cincinnati has an amaazing number of majors to pick from. However, they are known for several things over the other Ohio Schools:

They have a nationally ranked school of music. I should note that when I use the term "nationally ranked," I usually mean within the top 10 in the nation.

They have a nationally ranked program in Design, Art, Architecture and Planning.

They are nationally ranked in criminal justice

Most importantly: They are the only Ohio state university to have paid coops for many majors. This provides 1.5 years of paid coop experience. This gives kids a terrific resume upon graduation.

From what I have seen, they give out more scholarship money than that of any other Ohio University, which is fair because they have the highest tuition among the schools too.
