Anyone else who is in for next fall?

Their mascot is seriously screwy.

But...no, I'm not. Sorry, this is totally unrelated, but the mascot makes me giggle.

lol, What do you mean? :-) At least it catches your attention...

It does! I think it's cool! Screwy is fun.

A lot of my friends are thinking about going there, they really thought it was a nice place.

Where are you from? Ohio? or some rich kid from New England like the other 50% at OWU...just kidding! LoL

i applied there.

can someone tell me more about the school? the reputation, the atmosphere, acceptance rate and etc..?

last year the acceptance rate was in the high 60s. out of those who were accepted, about a third got some form of merit aid.

for internationals, the acceptance rate was 35% with about 70% getting aid.

i'll let someone else comment about the student body and everything else.

Atlantia:

Did you hear back? Accepted? Rejected? Still waiting?

What was the matriculation rate?

That seems unusally generous. Are you sure the 70% was not for matriculated candidates instead of admitted?

from USNews database, which is for 04-05:

applications= 2803
admissions= 2065
enrolled= 563

so overall,
acceptance rate = 2065/2803 = 73.7%
yield = 563/2065 = 27.3%

USNews reports that:
ED acceptance = 86%
EA acceptance = 93%
RD acceptance = 68%

Yield for RD would be less than the overall rate of 27.3, but I don't have the numbers to calculate.

35% of the freshman class came in early.

Thanks, Papa Chicken.

But I'm also interested in what stud05 claimed that "70% of the admitted internationals received aid". That sounds awfully generous.

I recall Carolyn tipping us off about something like that a while back but unfortunately I didn't bookmark it.

this may help, same source

...................................First-year students / Total undergraduates

So, the RD admission rate for Ohio Wesleyan is in the high 60s like I previously mentioned. One caveat for the number from the US News numbers, which applies to all schools not just Ohio Wesleyan, is that the numbers are a few years old.

If you want me to find the source for the 70% of internationals receiving merit aid, do let me know.

Then again, keep in mind that it is much much harder to get accepted as an international, probably more so than any of the other better ranked LACs because Ohio Wesleyan has made a name for itself for being especially generous with internationals and therefore attracts an unusually high number of international applications. From what I remember the admission rate for internationals was around 35%. If you want that source, I will post it here later?

Most of USNews' data for the 2006 published report come from '04 graduates (HS & college stats), so, yes, the data are about 1 & 1/2 years old now. Examples: SAT ranges of incoming freshmen & college graduation rates. Some data however, like finacial aid #'s, are for the 04-05 school year, so a bit more current.

For OWU, USNews also reports that 9%, or 182 students, are international (pretty large as you've said), and that 180 out of 182 received some form of financial aid...wow!....this is need and non-need (i.e., merit) combined. No other details on this subject I can see. [As a somewhat random comparison on international percent, nearby Denison is 4%, nearby Wittenberg is 0%, Ohio State is 3%, Tufts is 6%, Amherst is 6%, Bowdoin is 3%, Colby is 7%, Davidson is 3%, Occidental is 2%, & Macalester is 14%...the last being also known as international-friendly.]

Other interesting tidbits on the OWU international-friendliness issue: 47 countries represented, with many international-special services, like international student center, special counselors/advisors, & special orientation.

No data on international acceptance rate unfortunately.

mac4u, i'm still waiting for a letter from them.

one of the reasons i applied there was because on the website it said that they could give international financial aid up to full tuition. (there are very few schools in the US that give full tuition aid for internationals.) so i went for it.

Wow thanks for the info.

The current freshman class has 9% of international though historically for the past 10 years, it has been in the neighbourhood of 13% and the current strategic efforts (http://provost.owu.edu/) peg that % at 15%. I am sure you can find the exact numbers from previous years on old US News reports.

Peterson's "General Information for International Students" publication lists a 37% acceptance rate for international students for Fall 2004.

The same publication puts average aid for international students at $17,095

i got accepted, :) by email.
with a 22,000 trustee award and 6000 grant.

Did you guys get in?

Congrats!!! With your 4.3 GPA and 1% HS rank, you were obviously a pretty competitive applicant for the merit aid pool. Your second-to-last message implied that you were international (an attractive group at Wesleyan), so your odds of getting aid obviously were pretty close to 1.

Did you go to one of those admissions visits? Or boost your chances in any other way? Just curious...
