i have a 3.4 unweighted gpa but a high ACT score of 35. i also have extracurriculars. I am president of a club at my school and i am also an internationally acclaimed musician. I have won many international level music competitions and i give concerts all around the US and other countries. I will also have good recommendation letters from teachers. I would really like to go to Case Western Reserve University but i dont know how i stand about getting in. Since it is a private school essentially i would also like a scholarship but i dont know if i can get a scholarship with my GPA. I would like to double major in business management/economics as well as music. How are my chance of getting in to Case? Or any other school in that range? I am also not from Ohio so i would be an out of state student if that helps at all. Thank you!
Case is private so out of state is irrelevant. A 3.4 GPA will make Case a reach despite your high ACT score.
if i apply EA or ED will it help my admission chance?
also would it help that im not apply for the more popular majors there? Cause business isnt as popular as health sciences or engineering there
That is a fantastic school. I would definitely apply ED there if you and your family run the cost calculator and it looks affordable. Maybe you would even receive a scholarship for your musical talents.
Absolutely to apply EA or ED for CWRU. CW is not taking anyone off the waitlist this year, the first in many cycles. They could get very selective next year with acceptances. But, as others have said, you are not applying the very popular majors like Health-sciences (Bio, Biochem, BME) or engineering, so that definitely helps your chances. But absolutely apply early rounds, lock into ED if you are absolutely certain the school is for you.
Our family attended the admitted students wknd this April, it is quite apparent the school wants to move up in the ranks with other areas (beyond meds and engineering), so if you have strong music performance credentials, that will only help. The GPA is a bit weakish but the ACT is good, take a shot. Case gave out very good merit aid package, our son got the 28K/yr merit scholarship even we didn’t qualify much need based aid elsewhere.
I would say it’s a reach but not impossible. I think there may be music-specific scholarships there that might require an on campus audition (or video supplement if a visit is impossible). Take a look. Case protects its yield, so demonstrated interest is important and it has also been known to turn away people with insanely high stats if the school thinks it’s being used as a backup. Having a lower GPA might make your interest more credible? That said, I would do what you can to bring up your GPA in the fall of your senior year. Also if you have a rigorous course load, that will help too. If it’s your definitive first choice and the NPC works for your family, you could also consider ED.
Good luck, it is a great school!
Thank you all so much for your insights!!
