Ok I need help

<p>Hey I'm 17 and about to be a senior I have been looking at this school since 8th grade when the coach came to talk to my brother. I have spoken to a coach recently and he wanted me to play football there I have since quit football and only play lacrosse and mixed martial arts. I have a horrible 2.9 gpa and I have over 100 volunteer hours and a 1860 on my sat. I work two jobs year round and have no sea experience. I'm not sure if it matters but I am out of state. What do u think my chances are of getting in or even being sent to nmmi for a year first. </p>

<p>P.S. I am taking honors marine bio and physics next year plus calculus</p>

<p>I’m not going to lie, that GPA is going to hurt you. Do everything in your power to bring it up. GPA and class ranking (which is driven by GPA) are very important to the admissions process at KP. Your SATs are reasonably good and your ECs look O.K. Being out of state makes no difference since this is a federal academy and a congressional nomination is required for admission. Sea experience does not really matter that much other than showing an interest in all things nautical. They will teach you what you need to know.</p>

<p>KPMairneops dad is right on all his points. What state are you in? Have you started and filled out the application packet? Have your started the process for your congressional nomination? Your grades are bad but not totally bad given you have/are taking AP and Honors courses - lots of Kings Pointers underachieve in some aspect of their high school application. Have you contaced the LAX coach to make a visit?</p>

<p>Here’s my advice:

  1. Identify what you need to do to get a nomination from your Congressman and two US Senators. Application deadlines for appointments to the class of 2014 (the one that enters in July 2010) are usually between Spet. 20th and November 15th - each nominating authority has their own time table depending on their application & interview process. The best way to find this out is on their own websites. They usually have a tab for “Service Academies” “Service Academy Nominations” etc. If it’s not right on their homepage then look under “Constituent Services” the POC is usually someone in their local (vice their Washington, DC) district office. Do this first as it takes time and you can’t miss their deadlines if they have review/interview boards set up as part of the process.
  2. Start an application at USMMA Admissions; talk to someone in admissions - there are several admissions officers, there is one assigned for your state. just call and ask, try calling between 8 and 9 AM or at 1PM Eastern or send an email to the POC on line.
  3. Go online to [United</a> States Merchant Marine Academy](<a href=“http://www.USMMA.Edu%5DUnited”>http://www.USMMA.Edu) and review the physical requirements re: DODMERB stuff and ensure you know what has to be done there - getting this scheduled and done is your responsibility.
  4. Schedule an overnight visit to the academyy if at all possible and within your ability - that’s the best way for you to see life there and ensure it is something you want to do. Kings Point isn’t for everyone, from my perspective it’s great but to get through all four years you have to want to be there. </p>

<p>Good luck!</p>
