Ok, so how much does it count and does everyone get one?

The interview, I mean?
I realize all questions about interviewing have probably already been tired out but, really, does EVERYONE get an interview?

I've heard it all has to do with the availability of alumni in your area but, hypothetically speaking, if there were a kid with like a 2.8 GPA and a 1600 SAT, would the people at Penn blow him off and toss his papers into the shredder? Or would they sit there, mull it over, pensively bite their lower lip, reminisce about what it felt like to be a struggling student, then call up local alumni?
I don't mean to offend anyone who has scores like that or anything, just, really??

The reason I ask is because I was pretty stoked when I found out I was getting an interview a couple weeks ago. I figured I was borderline.
Basically, the interview was really enjoyable. But more recently I've heard that they have almost no effect.

I think it is just random.

It really doesn’t matter. On a scale of 1-5 ( 1 being the best), Yale adcom told me that the interview is a 3 while the GPA, SAT, essays are a 1. a bad interview will hurt you, a 1/100 interview will give you a boost. But an okay interview will not affect you don’t much.

Many people also feel like their interview went really well ( emphasis on MANY). I haven’t heard of too many bad interviews, so unless you think it was your greatest 1 hr. of your life, it won’t help you too much.

wow a 3/5 is still really high!

will it hurt you if you don’t get/do an interview?

What does a Yale adcom comment tell you about Penn’s process?

Interesting. So should I have come in with my ipod blaring grindcore, politely apologize, then proceed to discuss how I opened up an orphanage in Ethiopia? Like, would I have to have been mindblowingly exceptional to make a considerable difference?
Honestly, I think I did great. But, yeah, I do bet they get lots of generic recommendations claiming the student was a swell kid.

Hahaha, “greatest 1 hr. of your life” reminds me of their “finest hour”…

My friend was accepted ED to Wharton, and she didn’t get an interview. It won’t hurt you at all, because its not your fault, but the lack of available alumni.

It just gives you a little perspective about the college process at another highly selective and prestigious school. Maybe the interview is really important at Penn, but I’ve known arrogant people who pretty much acted bored during their interview who get in. But also people who thought their interview was exceptional and got flat out rejected.

I’m not saying your interview wasn’t great, because it probably was very good! But just like how a lot of applicants think their essays are the best, when really they weren’t that good, the same can be said for interviews.

Interviews are not that important because like I said, many people do not get one, based on where they live. Should these people with an interview get a huge boost then? OF COURSE not!! If you did well, Congrats! But don’t think it will get you in.
