Ok, somebody explain please

I got this question from the lit test:

Which of the following is a main verb?

a) come
b) shall see
c) shalt pass
d) shall find
e) do ensconce

Thx in advance

well... I'm glad I didn't take that test. I almost did... I didn't realize it tested straight grammar like that.

Yea, this one is from the Official SAT II study guide. Any ideas guys?

My guess is (a) because it is the only "stand alone" verb choice.

yea i think a also

I just finished an entire semester of pure grammar, and I've never even heard of a "main verb." I would guess A as well since it lacks helping verbs.

I googled "main verb" - took about a second - and yes, (a) is correct.

That's exactly what I thought. But it turns out we're all wrong. Anyone want to take a second guess and explain it to me, :-D?

k is it e?

since DO is the main verb and idk wth ensconce is..lol

Yes, you're right, but why? I just don't get how "do ensconce" can be the main verb. I mean it's two words, so shouldn't it be only do or ensconce? And what's wrong with "come"?

Er, a main verb is one that's integral to the meaning of a sentence; the number of words is irrelevant. It's impossible to answer a question like this without using the context of the actual passage.

cuz do is something that they do..the word after it explains the first word (do) the others show what will happen..not what happens now or something

idk really..but for the SAT u jus need to be right..not know WHY its right

so true, ^^... I can't believe this came up in the lit test though

thx

yea ..thats weird
