On the Common App, I see that the Demographics section is “entirely optional”, but would it penalize me to leave it completely blank? I just don’t think it’s necessary for colleges to know my religious preference and race to evaluate whether I’d be academically successful at their school.
If you are URM it will be an advantage. If you are applying to a religiously affiliated school it may be an advantage, if you are of that religion. Otherwise is for statistical purposes and federally mandated reporting in some cases.
I’m applying to mostly public schools that aren’t religiously affiliated, and I’m not an URM.
