Okay GPA... Good Scores... Chance me anyway?

So I just got through with another round of testing and I thought I would do one of these

Puerto Rican Male
New York
Intended Major: Business and History
High school: One of the top 10 public HS's in the country.
Rank: Dunno... Probably top 30%

GPA: 3.3 UW. I have a really steep upward trend, though. MY freshman year and 8th grade grades on my transcript are keeping me down... I got a 1.0 in 8th grade Spanish... (I did not try at all)

ACT: -> 32 with highest combination

SAT: Projecting 2150+ super scored with November SAT
SAT II: 750 US History, 660 Lit.

Extracurriculars / Leadership
- Varsity Wrestling Captain
- President of Symphony Orchestra
- Captain of the Ultimate Frisbee Team
- Captain & Co-Founder of the Badminton team
- Captain & Co-Founder of the Footbag (hacky sack) team
- Principal Bassist (1st chair) of Symphony Orchestra
- Principal Bassist of Chamber Orchestra
- Principal Bassist of Stage Band
- 3x Recipient of American Numismatic Association Young Numismatist Scholarship (Full ride to a summer seminar in Colorado)

Other stuff
- Volunteered with my brother, a peace corps volunteer, teaching English for a little over three weeks in a rural Costa Rican village. It wasn't through any 'program', I just did it with my brother who was already stationed there.

-Volunteered with Student Conservation Association to preserve Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. Poplar Forest was one of his estates, similar to Monticello (that building on the back of the nickel). Also rebuilt a historically accurate curtiledge fence that will remain as a permanent exhibit there.

-Heavily involved with Numismatics (coins and currency). I have done several lectures at local coin clubs and conventions.

-I work for a nationally recognized dealer and expert on Obsolete Currency. I work at cataloging, working as a representative at coin shows and auctions. In the past I have attended auctions and placed bids on his behalf upwards of $10,000. He trusts me with his checkbook.

Senior Year 1st Semester Projected Grades:
Math 12 STD: 4.0
Orchestra: 4.0
AP Euro: 4.0
Chinese II: 4.0
Physics: 3.5?
Film Study: 3.5
AP Music Theory: 3.5? possibly 3.0
Lifetime Skills: 4.0
Chamber Orchestra: P
Stage Band: P
Student Initiated Research: P

As a note about Student Initiated Research, my research proposal was one of 10 that was accepted by my school. I am currently researching 19th century privately issued bank notes, and their role in local economies and commerce.

Recommendations:
1.) English teacher from last year. She loved me, she is using many of my essays as examples for this year.
2.) EHAP Teacher. I really think he thinks very highly of me.
3.) Obsolete currency dealer. - I got a copy of his recommendation letter. It is fantastic, speaks of my intelligence and intellectual maturity.
4.) Curator of Colonial Williamsburg Historical Society. - Perhaps my most "impressive" letter. The curator of Colonial Williamsburg was my instructor at a numismatic seminar I went to last summer. He took a liking to me, and I have no doubt the rec is fantastic.

Phew, that was a little on the long side.

So... chance me for...

College of William and Mary (1st choice)
University of Virginia
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Duke (Legacy)
University of Michigan (Legacy)
NYU (Legacy)
University of Vermont
Villanova
Vanderbilt
Tulane

If you chance me I will chance you back immediately. Thanks!

Hey another puerto rican! Yay, oh but I look bad compared to you XD. I unno exactly for the schools but on a plus, your race helps you. Im applying NYU too.

U of M looks at your highest composite ACT, not your highest combination, though that is factored in. What’s your actual highest composite?

My highest actual composite score is a 31

Anyone else? Post here with your thread and I’ll chance you back

your composite score is still really good. Your grades are good and your extra curriculars are great, I think you’ll do fine with admissions.

How many parents do you have? Duke, for example, will only consider you a legacy if one of your parents graduated as an undergrad there. Have you checked the others?

Advice first: your college list is not as coherent as it should be (NYU and Vanderbilt on the same list makes me go hmmmmmm). Perhaps you should do more research.

That said:
College of William and Mary: don’t know it well enough
University of Virginia: high reach
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill: reach
Duke: low reach, legacy status helps
University of Michigan: don’t know it well enough
NYU: high reach
University of Vermont: safety
Villanova: don’t know it well enough
Vanderbilt: match
Tulane: match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/808196-i-want-candy-colleges-change-lives-schools.html</a></p>

William and Mary is a reach because of your rank and meh EC’s
UCVA: ‘’
UNC: ‘’
Duke: low reach b/c of legacy
Michigan: good shot
NYU: low reach but possible with legacy
UVT: saftey
Nova: match
Tulane: Match
Vandy: high match

Chance Back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/804723-chances-ed-dartmouth.html</a></p>

Your ACT’s killer, but given your low GPA, you’re gonna have problems as an out-of-stater applying to UMich, especially given that only 6% of accepted Freshman have below a 3.5UW GPA. Although since you’re a Legacy, it’s probably a low reach.

hmom, my brother went to UMich, hence it is a legacy. Not as good as a parent, I know, but it is something.

philiper, how can you say that I have meh EC’s when I am president of the orchestra, captain of the wrestling team, and nationally recognized young numismatist? I work under a nationally respected expert in my field. I don’t think many other teenagers have lectured about the Aldrich-Vreeland act.

My rank is understandably not so great because of 8th grade and freshman year grades holding me back.

Cronotrigger, I don’t really want to play the race card, but my brother was accepted into UMich with a 3.0 GPA and lower SAT scores than I. So, as a URM I think that I have a pretty decent chance.

Anyone else out there?

There is no sort of legacy at any college. Either your file gets the legacy tag or it doesn’t.

The upward trend & pretty unique extracurriculars will help you, but I do agree that your GPA is pretty low.

College of William and Mary: reach
University of Virginia: high reach
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill: reach
Duke: reach w/ legacy
University of Michigan: not familiar with how competitive it is…
NYU: reach
University of Vermont: don’t know
Villanova: don’t know it well
Vanderbilt: low reach
Tulane: match

good luck!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/808348-whatcha-say-you-chance-me-today-i-chance-back-jason-derulo-style.html?highlight=whatcha</a></p>

I just want to say that despite your GPA, your EC’s look really good. Doing instrumental stuff generally pleases colleges. And I think you have a pretty good chance at most of the schools because of it. I could give you a more accurate chance if you gave individual ACT scores though because I don’t think most schools will take highest combined for the ACT (my counselor told me this).

College of William and Mary (1st choice)–slight reach
University of Virginia–reach
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.–slight reach
Duke (Legacy)–i would go with either a low match/low reach, but I think being a legacy helps IMMENSELY
University of Michigan (Legacy)–in
NYU (Legacy)–in
University of Vermont–in
Villanova–in
Vanderbilt–reach
Tulane–IN

chance me back??
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/802006-what-my-chances-getting-into-unc.html</a></p>

i think you’re in for nova and tulane, and definitely uvm. not sure about the rest.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/814456-chances-ill-reciprocate.html</a></p>

Thanks for all the input :)

Anyone else out there? I’ll chance back, obviously.
