Okay I know 1 or 2 W's are fine, but what about 10?

Okay my situation goes like this:

I graduated high school in 2005 in Las Vegas then subsequently decided to attend UNLV for a semester, however due to my immaturity and lack of direction or guidance I dropped all four of my classes and just worked. I tried again the next semester at a local CC, but I again dropped four out of five of my classes because I was convinced by my brother and his friends to work for their mortgage/real estate venture (which ultimately failed) and that school was a waste of time.

A year later in Spring 2007, I decided to move to the bay area to find better opportunities for myself. I enroll in a CCC and this time take it seriously, getting a 3.75 in my first semester. Currently, I have 63 units with a 3.66 GPA with a massive upward trend in the past year, received a 4.0 in the past 3 semesters because I decided to shoot for Cal, and hopefully after this semester my GPA will be around 3.75ish with 83 units. I did withdraw from a couple of classes in CCC however because one of them I ended up not needing and the other one was a math class which was poorly taught and I struggled in.

So will my **** ups during my first year out of high school kill my chances of getting into either Cal or UCLA? At Cal I want to major in Political Economy and at UCLA it's polisci. I also want to attend law school afterwards, and I did hear that W's are frowned upon by grad schools.

you need to write about this in your personal essay or the additional comments section. I think you still have a chance. upward trend is good. If you have any good ec’s that will help too. Good luck homie.

Thanks for the advice dude. I do have some good EC’s such as working as a bank teller for the past 2 and a half years, this semester I am a teacher assistant/tutor in Spanish, and I am also on my school’s forensics team this semester and made it to the quarter finals for debate at the two tournaments I went to this past month.

if they’re all W’s they won’t affect your GPA which means what the UC’s will only see is that glorious 3.75. Just explain what you did here and you’ll be fine. Why don’t you TAG some schools like SD or Davis for a backup if you feel like the W’s would hurt you that bad for your goal of Cal/UCLA?

I think you should be fine, provided that you explain your situation in the personal statement. Your EC’s are great, too. Keep up the good work, and wishing you the best of luck!

i had 10 W’s and I got into UCLA
