Okay Indian time to gear up for MIT 2006

Hey I am starting this post for the Indian MIT aspirants for 2006.Hope to hear from all you great people soon and then maybe we can have regular posts and discussions throughout the application process.
For a start tell me you're in and your status (whether in high school or on a gap year).

lol sure I'm in (as an MIT aspirant for 2006). high school...finally done with junior year and well working on EA to MIT. any luck on essay topic so far etc...what's your aim sn?

Dude,
Are you an indian citizen or an indian ethnicity.(coz as far as I know international applicants are not allowed EA at MIT but tell me if my info is wrong).
Well i am from Dehra Dun India. As of now only one plan---get into MIT.
So what are your stats right now.
Just give me the SAT and school stuff + any good achievement/research.

P.S. No luck whatsoever at the Essay. The adcomm's say the application will be up mid august. So lets see

I got 1500 in the old SAT(750 each)
Sat2 Phys:800
Sat2 Math 2c:780

achievment research? hell no, i tried for the intel science thingy, but my partner backed out halfway thru(a r s e h o l e).

Im applying but not reall expecting to get in. They said on their site that all their intl students are intl achievers in science. sounds like an american iit, so i hope i ge into cornell or something rather than mit.

hey shikhar are you in Doon school?

nah I'm of indian ethnicity...(proud of it might i add), but I live in NJ...I'm a very math/science oriented kid and my passion is medicine (I got to a magnet school called Academy of Allied health and Science...love it =)) and well I also dance at Indian Culturual Shows and well I like to dance in general.

I do a lot of otehr things but as you mentioned for SATs (800 math , 700 verbal)

Physics : 800
MATH IIC: 800
Taking History or BIO in October.

Um other than that....yeah

PS: Oh by the way, I lived in Indian for the first 4 years of my life and going back finally this summer ...can't wait!! woo

No I am from St. Joseph's Academy,Dehra Dun.
And dude can you tell me something regarding this Intel thing. Can I take it this year in class 12th
Also Havaldar tell me where are you from.

P.S. It's confirmed international's not elligible for Early action

well you are welcome merudh123 to this forum.
Though you might have things a bit lighter for you than the rest of us.
But best of luck.

Okay guys do work experience help people make their applications strong.

the "intel thing" isn't something you have to have on your application....if i rmbr correctly, its not even considered a hook on the app. As long as you have good SAT scores and you've done something to pursue your passions, you have a good chance. Just because some people have soo many different types of science and research things doesn't mean you have to. Just stick to being human and make the best of what opportunites you have and show how you are dedicated to one thing.

But actually my passion is Computer Science and so I thought maybe there would be something in it which I might like.
So can you tell me something about it.

http://www.sciserv.org/sts/students/categories.asp

take a look at the computer science category.

Hey everyone,

Jus wanted to drop by n let you know dat you dont need to be a science award winner or even a science oriented student to get into MIT. [talkin abt internationals like us, here]

How can i say that?

Because I got into class of '09 without the two :)

Ive been a commerce student all HS (concentratin in Econ, Business mangment, and Accounts) n will be pursuin a bachelors degree in Econ at MIT as well..

I should add that as long as you have decent SAT scores, a good GPA and well rounded activities with strong focus in one or two (yep, the passion stuff), you would make a very strong candidate.
wat differentiates you from the rest of the applicant pool is YOUR ESSAY(s).

Donot underestimate the importance of your essays!!! At competitive colleges like HYPM where almost every application looks alike (SATs, GPAs and even ECs), what makes your app stand out is your essay. Give it enough time n effort n im sure you'll all do just fine :)

n yeah, if u wanna bombard me with more app-related Qs... do email me at laila(at)mit(dot)edu

i'll try to be around CC too though :)

Goodluck everyone!

Laila Shabir.

hey laila..you seem like me....(although I am science oriented...I don't have any awards or anything...just pure dedication in what I do)....whats your aim sn by the way (it'd be cool to just talk and get to know what its really like at MIT ...thanks)

Well, Oh laila you can't really tell the importance of research work if you did'nt take science.
But you are right though about the passion.
But an advice for all one should not kill themselves if they do not make it to the olympiads but all applicants should try to do some research in their field of interest,it is really very informative and helpful.
Note of caution that if you are not really prepared for doing such a thing you might as well leave it out for you have to be you while applying.
Guys do indians have the availability of interviews to them from MIT.

I'm indian, but I live in Arizona (my parents were born in India and came here in the late 1980s). I will be applying to MIT RD. Basic info for me I guess is a 1550 on the old SAT, 2290 on the new SAT, 800's in Math IIC, Writing, Chemistry, and Physics. That's it I guess. Good luck to everyone!

Btw, is MIT on the common app.?

Sorry no common App for MIT.

man, you guys are really good!800's in almost everything!
hopefully ill get into cornell or some such.

Shikhar you can take the Intel in the 12th, but by the time you find out if you've made it, itll be beyond the app deadline. If youre really science dedicated, then you can ask your science teachers about how to get the form.

I'm living in Mumbai. Jai Hind College is da place!!!!

I am aiming for MIT '07, but I came here anyways to see my desi seniors apply.

I am trying for intel and siemens, intel is self, siemens I just stuck on my best friend(yes vector, I know you said to find someone interested, but he is interested now). The idea is good I think. It isn't revolutionary, but I think that any kind of research can help the AI field, which is only now budding. This year I am just doing it as a learning process, since I think I really need to learn how professional scientists operate.

Good luck everyone!!!

Well good thing you are starting so early sagar..And one ore thing is it necessary to have a partner for the Intel fair.
+ in Intel do we have to present live demonstration of models or do we have to present a concept on which work can be done. What are your subjects for the fairs.

I need a parter for siemens, and only by myself for intel.

My subject is AI. Basically... well I am trying to create AI(think dog or frog, not some rocket scientist). I am doing a series of simulations based on some research I did, and I am going to see what I get. The thing is that the bots are not preprogrammed in anyway. It is all about they doing everything themselves.

Most people say I won't find anything, but I am doing it anyway because something tells me it will work. Besides, its an idea that I have been thinking of for 4 years(it gets better as I study things like graph theory, etc), so it deserves a shot.

I will post results as soon as I get em.
