This is a repost from a post I started in college search and selection... I think I might get a better response out of this forum.

ok I dont want my chances(I'll still apply anyway haha)... I need to know how to categorize my choices so I can add/drop schools... ok so stats... top 10% of largest school in Nashville 3.7 UW taking all the hard courses and blah, 28 on ACT but I'm taking it again in October and I should make at least a 32 but most likely higher. Umm I have pretty good ECs and I have a knack for writing really good essays (I'm so modest) I know I can get great RECs too. Does having a Jewish heritage help? hahah Oh yeah I come from an EXTREMELY disadvantaged background(mum has MS, dad's no where to be found, I was living in lots of places 9th n 10th grade because my mom was staying in a women's shelter so I had to go from friends house to friends house, really rough time which really hurt my GPA, I've had to actually help pay rent since I was 16 working at least 25 hours a week and up to 60[illegal I know] and like living in super poverty hah, but whats a little adversity, could be worse) anyway here are the schools

USC, UCLA, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer(I have a great interest in the consortium hah), Occidental, Loyola Marymount, and Chapman

So basically can you guys separate these for me? Do I need some safeties? Any ideas if so? I want a SoCal school preferrably LAC with either good film or business depts... I love me some film...

Here are some California schools..got it from a website..i deleted about half of the list because they were either too pre-professional or they weren't co-ed..the ones with the (*) symbol are ones that you should pay close attention to, which I think will be a good match or good school that seems to match what you are looking for.

Antioch University-Los Angeles
Azusa Pacific University*

Thanks again siren, I'm sorting through the list now. So you know, haha Scripps is an all girls school, although I guess I could wear a wig, don't think I could pull it off though.

Anybody else want to help me split these up (the ones I'm applying to, not siren's list)? PUHPUHPUHPLEASE

I see you want to come to LA...just know that Southern boys don't last long here

Jewish heritage is absolutely no help. Disadvantaged background is. Arrogance is even less help, don't count on going from a 28 to a 32+ without a hell of a lot of preparation and luck.

Are you applying for financial aid?

Currently, none of the schools you have listed are safeties. Loyola Marymount you can probably get into, but it's nobody's safety unless you're qualified for Ivies.

USC - If your essays and ECs are as amazing as you say, it could be a match, with an ACT of 30+
UCLA - Reach (out of state)
Pomona - REACH
Claremont McKenna - Slight reach
Pitzer - Match
Occidental - Match - emphasize disadvantage and difficulties
Chapman - Safe match
LMU - Safe match

Remember, UCLA, Pomona, and CMC all require SAT IIs. USC strongly recommends them - meaning you're not getting in without them. The rest, it helps.

USC and Chapman have the best film schools around here but both are incredibly competitive and you have no chance at them. LMU also has a deccent film school which you may have a shot at.

Some LA area safeties might be Whittier College and the University of Redlands.

namaste, thanks for your post, but you came off sort of rude. but whatever...

First off, I love stereotypes. I love them so much that I think I'll go have sex with my sister, while chew on straw with my remaining tooth, and play the banjo, because you know... I do that... because I'm from the south and all. As a matter of fact, I can't even read what I'm typing right now. ANYWAY...

I got that 28 sophomore year, all my practice tests show 33 and I do even better in real test environment, it's not arrogance.

AND "As a part of the candidates application, Pomona College requires either the new SAT plus two SAT-Subject Tests OR the ACT." Actually the only place I've seen that doesn't follow that is the UC system(I'm basically taking UCLA off the list)

And with the film schools, if I don't get in immediately that's fine, as they(well, USC I'm certain of at least) let you join later on, too. Before you start bashing my chances about that, too, I'll be okay if that doesn't work out either.

Remember I asked to categorize them, if I wanted you to tell me that I basically shouldn't bother, I would have asked for that. I really am not trying to be mean, but after reading it, sounds like I am upset. well I'm not. :)

so if i was rude, isn't that stereotypically appreciated in the south?

ok, let's take your word and say you do get a 33 on the ACT. that is definately in or above range for all your schools, including pomona. however many of the schools, especially pomona CMC and USC want to see some SAT IIs, especially for scholarship money. it wil hurt your chances if you arent taking some subject tests. two.

what does categorziing mean? i did categorize them. USC might be more of a match now. why aren't you taking SAT I? west coast schools prefer it even if they say they are neutral.

"so if i was rude, isn't that stereotypically appreciated in the south?" wait... what? and I never said you didn't categorize them, I was just stating that I didn't ask for other parts of your reply. And I'm not taking the SATs because I don't have the money and Tennessee students can take the ACT free their senior year. : / With the SAT II- I don't even know what subjects I would do, aside from English.

namaste, you're talking about how arrogance is something Jusgimmethegun should avoid, yet you seem to hold yourself and SoCal above the South...? Hm.

Anyways,
Jusgimmethegun: what kind of EC's do you have? Are they arts-related? Creativity is really important for applying to film schools. USC's Cinema-TV (production) and Cinema-TV (critical studies) programs each only accept 50 freshmen a year. So those are a reach for EVERYONE. But you're right, they accept many more transfers.
As for UCLA, you don't apply to the film program until your junior year, and it's pretty difficult to get into, so you could end up just not getting your major at all.

And since you want categorization:
USC - match for the university (reach for their film school)
UCLA - reach (out of state)
Pomona - reach
Claremont McKenna - reach
Occidental - slight reach (apparantly very selective admissions? just what I've heard)
Loyola Marymount - safe match
Chapman - safe match

I would pick Chapman for film over LMU any day though.

*Look into Cal State - Long Beach, too. It would be a safety for you. Spielberg graduated there, so its expected their film department will get some $$$.

Btw, I'm only still a senior in HS - also from the south (VA) and applying to film school (USC) and Occidental.

umm lets see, in fact nearly all of my ECs center on arts- I'm an arts school drop out haha actually would it help to say that I got into an arts school only one of 3 my age(we were actually too old) and one of just a handful of those who got into everything they auditioned for (theatre, visual arts, and guitar)? I had to leave for personal reasons in the family : /... aside from that, I run lights and sound for all of my schools productions, and with my school's crappy system I basically risk my life on a daily basis. Sometimes, during show season, I spend up to 10 extra(on top of the usual 7) hours at school, and have done so for three years. Probably the highlight of my time doing that would be recently being asked, along with the rest of our lighting crew, to run lights for an international press conference with mario andretti(much older than I thought he'd be). I also was the lead in several plays, and was asked to be last year but I had no time. Also, I am currently in serious talks with the head of Mass Media at my school to create a film club, of which I would be the President. Other art stuff includes ummm winning a place in a poetry book for one poem, and being a finalist in a poetry contest for another poem. Umm I collect movies often, I used to buy scripts but that got too expensive : (. However, I have personally studied screenwriting for several years(although I intend to pursue Cinematography). I play guitar and write a lot of my own stuff and have been in a couple of bands but it's rather hard to catch a break in Music City. I also sing, play drums, and a bit of bass too. I play trumpet and bells in church sometimes. aside from arts: I worked as a server (who had to dance! UGH) for 14mos. My mom got some $$ from the gov. and I was able to take my summer off, which I spent studying politics and religion (independently) I'll be getting a job within the next few weeks and working even more hours... Umm I played JV soccer 9th grade (Rec league for 6 years), and Varsity Tennis (dist. champs) 10th, I plan on either joining a traveling soccer team this year or rejoining the school team. I'll also be joining NHS(if that's worth anything) and maybe get more volunteer hours to add to my 70 hours of mowing lawns for elderly (I volunteer to you know... volunteer not to put on an application) I like beans. Just making sure you're still reading hah. In 9th grade I made a website dedicated to dragonball z, pretty much a failure haha, recently I built my own computer. Umm I cook on an almost daily basis for my family, along with all the grocery shopping, and some bill paying. I have been part of my church's LOGOS youth program for 9 years, I play and sing and do little plays and whatnot haha. I can't think of anything else right now, but I know there's more. sorry for going on so long disorganized. and tawny it's quite awesome that you have similar interests and I was reading about LMU and it basically said their film courses don't really kick off till junior year, Chapman throws you into it. And I haven't looked into CSLB b/c I fear that it will be an impacted major.

and it sounds like you're used to waiting. chapman film school is so hard to get into. LMU should be plenty good for you especially if you get the presidential scholarship which is a posibilithy with your stats.

Justgimmethegun: woww we have many similarities! i spend ridiculous amounts of time doing theatre....except i was never in a band, sang, or played guitar...though i do play violin...wow i made a website too, dedicated to final fantasy (not dragonball z, but they both originated in japan hahaha)... and i'm starting a film club at my school...

and i like beans too <-- see i read the whooole post.

whoa yeah so that's cool.

and i agree - your personal circumstances should definitely be noted somewhere on your app, it shows you are hardworking, responsible, caring, and dedicated. (btw, my dad does not have MS but it is one of the many things they thought he had (he has had an undiagnosed neurological illness for 5 yrs now), so yeah there's another similarity there for ya, haha.)

whoa like... crazy... yeah my mom's MS was undiagnosed for like EVER basically. We all knew she had it though. And that is the reason I don't like the doctor's at Vanderbilt. crazy stuff nonetheless... so do you think I have good EC's? And are you also applying to Chapman? That'd be coool haha.

i think ucla is a match for you. i got in and my stats were similar and i have a MUCH smaller disadvantage than you. write some good essays. good luck!

namaste, sorry I didn't see your post... ummm do you know if I will find out about getting into film schools in time to make a decision about schools? And if you have the $$$ to put me through school, then be my guest and adopt me hahaha.

And I don't know if I'm going to worry with UCLA, I don't have those SAT II's...

don't worry about that. LMU and chapman are the ones that will pay. there's no different timetable.
your ECs are good but there must be some way to emphasize your disadvantaged background.
i would adopt underprivelged red... i mean rural folks who work extremely hard.
