Okay... so lets clear this up

Of course everyone has heard of the famous "conspiracy theory" that if you get into UCLA, the chances of you getting admitted to UCB are very slim and vice versa. What have you guys heard about this? Think it's true? If indeed this is true, anyone have a preference?

i know of plenty of people that have gotten into both. I only applied to UCLA though.

Clearing things up:

They have similar standards for their acceptees but they do not correlate on their admission decisions- the "theory" is actually a "myth" at best. UCB has been known to accept less qualified UCLA rejectees as well as overqualified UCLA rejectees, and UCLA is known to do the same. Do either do more of one rather than the other? No, despite what some random people may claim. UCB has its own share of acceptees who are underqualified who are rejected by UCLA (I read some ridiculous post somewhere that this occurance is only one sided). With that said, the MAJORITY of the time, a UCLA acceptee will usually be accepted by UCB as well.

highly agree with jyancy.

there are plenty of people who get into ucb who you wouldn't expect to be accepted, both for regular and spring admit. i've seen my share of those students... nothing outstanding about them, typical honors kids, wouldn't be on the list if you had to name the top 20 or 30 kids in the class.

i dont think the problem is ucla accepting underqualified applicants, because berkeley does the same. i think the problem is, ucla rejects more overqualified applicants than berkeley does, making it seem "random" and "unfair."

but quite honestly, almost everyone at ucla gets involved with extracurriculars and such, so i think they ARE looking for people with genuine and unique interests in their EC's, not people who are padding their resumes and look "overqualified." (no offense if they misinterpreted your app)

"but quite honestly, almost everyone at ucla gets involved with extracurriculars and such, so i think they ARE looking for people with genuine and unique interests in their EC's, not people who are padding their resumes and look "overqualified." (no offense if they misinterpreted your app)"

that is so true. i never even thought about doing anything that has to do with music in college, but im now dying to be in their marching band. i really wanted to go to UCSD, but they dont have a marching band. i think i'll pick UCLA over UCSD just because of that. they get to march in the rose bowl, that is so awesome. and it's free to fly around to games...no band fees to pay! funny how i can change from REALLY wanting to go to UCSD for the last 2 years, to REALLY wanting to go to UCLA since yesterday because of those ECs.

newpswahine, I PLAY TUBA IN THE MARCHING BAND!

yes, few schools can replicate the experience of performing in the rose bowl, the granddaddy of them all! it is always exciting to do all the shows, and football games are spirited and intense. our director also does work with some top notch drum corps (i believe he's worked with sc vanguard, cadets, cavaliers, among others), so he's very demanding but good with charting drill. i'd like to pride ourselves in marching a "real" show... a show where there's a repertoire of about 3 songs each and we actually make "field show" formations on the field. most college bands just play a couple short tunes, they form simple and boring formations like blocks and stuff during their shows. this year, the closer to one of our shows was mr. roboto, we formed a robot on the field and made the robot do the robot, and then we had all the band members do a robot too. our pep tunes are the most up-to-date of all college marching bands, i suspect. in addition to more traditional stuff, we do have britney spears' toxic, beyonce's crazy in love, family guy, etc. yes, NO BAND FEES. lunch is always provided for us after morning rehearsals at the rose bowl. uniforms, transportation... those are all givens, no band fees! we traveled to cal this year, not only was transportation and hotel free, they even gave us $40 spending money! although i couldnt go to the vegas bowl for personal reasons, it was the same, everything free + "spending" money lol. there's more games next year than this year, because not only is the band traveling to stanford, but will also head to the coliseum for that other school (that can only play a grand total of 3 songs-- 2 fight songs and "the hey song", so high school-ish). the band's also currently putting together funding for a BIG trip in 06 to... NOTRE DAME. yeah. ok and then once football season is over, there's basketball season, games are exciting, u get to play in legendary pauley pavilion. both our football and basketball programs are on the rise, so it should be fun in the upcoming years. besides those two, we also do some other gigs if youre available-- music for fox sports west's socal sports report and other sports news stuff, private companies who donate for us to play at their events (you get paid for these), we were even asked to be in a music video for a pop artist (but got canceled cuz of rainy weather).

in short, ucla marching band rocks my socks. =D

kfc4u: Do you wear the Hawaiian shirts for the band?

Hawaiian shirts for basketball games (and other pep rallies). They're specific UCLA Hawaiian shirts though.

Yeah...I saw them in their shirts over the summer when UCLA band played at the Mercedes Open (for Tennis).

They are the coolest shirts in the world. Can non-marching band students by then at Ackerman? I didn't see them when I was last there.

God, marching band is the lamest thing in the world.

Please don't tell me my opinion will someday change on this matter.

starman, it's ok. i dont care that you think marching band is the lamest thing in the world. i doubt anyone does. it's rude and no one asked you what you thought about it, so whatever. i guess some peole don't care about music and entertainment in all its forms.

ahem... can we get back on topic?

Sorry...(but seriously albywalby, those UCLA Hawaiian shirts are the coolest things in the world) :: dork ::

they're sold in ackerman, in the section near the bruin parents section i believe. i hear they run out often though.

I find the UCLA Hawaiian shirts pretty flamboyant... wearing one would make me look like either a metrosexual or a party animal, neither of which I really want to be...

Flopsy,

Sometimes a Hawaiian shirt is just a Hawaiian shirt. ;)

oh yea back to the original topic. i seriously think genuine and unique extracurriculars make a big difference at ucla. the "type" of student they are looking for is a little different from the ucb "type" IMO.

haha, Professor Kaplan (Philosophy) wears the same shorts and a hawaiian shirt to class almost every day. I kinda like the marching band hawaiin shirts - its a good casual look for basketball games and such...

but ok ok back on topic - the so-called conspiracy theory is just a myth; It would be a logistical nightmare. I'm with kfc4u - the type of student is just different sometimes.

it would not be a logistical nightmare since the uc's all use a common app

just have the servers match app numbers and presto each uc know where the students have been accepted

of course this would require that the uc's all cooperate and share info on acceptances

well it kinda would be, because not all the apps are read at the same time, and with UCLA, each app has to go through 4 different people (again, not necessarily at the same time). They still have to admit enough people to meet their class size, etc etc. So basically, "comparing notes" after the decisions have been made, then changing acceptances so most people accepted by one isn't accepted by the other definitely wouldn't work too well. But the logistics is only one aspect of it - its also simply a stupid idea. If a student is such that they fit what both universities are looking for, why should they deny that applicant just because "the other school is going to accept them"?
